A new pope is big news. But this one hits different. As Mintz says, 'All of religious history has led up to this. Yes, my dear friends, the pope is a White Sox fan.'

'Going to a World Series game as a fan is an expensive thing to do," Mintz says. "... This is someone who had opinions on Mark Buehrle. Now he's the pope.'
Does it fit? Jake and Jordan think so. 'The White Sox are what you would call a poverty franchise," Mintz says. "And what is the pope supposed to do if not take care of the poor?'
They laugh, but there's truth there: A team starved for hope and leadership now has a weird, cosmic link to the Vatican's top spot.
The hosts muse about what this could mean for the franchise. 'If the White Sox, along with his guidance … can rise,' Jordan says, 'maybe some divine influence will help.'
The White Sox themselves quickly embraced the connection. They sent a custom jersey and hat straight to the Vatican and invited the pontiff to his 'cathedral' at 35th and Shields.

Don't expect the pope to be rocking a fitted cap from the balcony or tossing out a first pitch, at least not according to precedent. But Pope Francis (a fan of Argentina's San Lorenzo) held up plenty of soccer scarves and jerseys, so maybe we'll see Pope Leo XIV do the same.
Mintz can't resist asking: 'If the pope comes out here and is like, 'I don't want robo umps,' does that move the needle?'
But as Jordan and Jake both note, the larger point is the narrative: 'Some things are bigger than baseball,' the White Sox said in a statement, 'and in this case, we're glad to have a White Sox fan represented at the Vatican.'
This intersection of faith and fandom is the kind of bit that only baseball can provide. The new pope is a White Sox fan — documented and witnessed. Cubs fans might grumble, but for a franchise starved for miracles, this moment offers hope, humor and maybe, just maybe, a prayer for the South Side.

DENVER (AP) — This was a cool moment for Warming Bernabel — being doused with an icy bucket of water. Not that long ago, winning moments like this were few and far between for the Colorado Rockies. That winning feeling, though, has returned a little more often in the second half of the season. The Rockies rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 on Monday night courtesy of Bernabel's walk-off single in the ninth inning. With that, the Rockies snapped a 10-game skid against the Dodgers. They also tied their season-high winning streak of four games. Even more, they're 14-15 since the All-Star break, while the NL West-leading Dodgers are 13-15. Colorado still trails the defending World Series champions by 35 games in the standings. No longer are the Rockies in imminent danger of setting a modern-era major league mark for losses, though. At 36-89, Colorado needs to win six of its final 37 games to steer clear of the dubious record set by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who finished 41-121. 'We're at this stage right now where we're trying to get better as a team,' All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman said. 'We're trying to play the game the right way and do things to put us in a position in the future to get to the spot that some of these teams we're playing against are in.' Colorado has won five series since the All-Star break. That after winning just two series before the break. 'You definitely see flashes,' Goodman said. 'We're a super-young team. But getting that learning experience and figuring out how to win at this level and how to do it together as a team has been pretty cool to watch the last month or so.' Ezequiel Tovar started a one-out rally with a bloop double that a charging Teoscar Hernández couldn't haul in. 'It's a big outfield,' Hernández explained. 'I tried to make a play. I didn't.' Second game of scheduled doubleheader between Brewers and Cubs postponed by inclement weather
CHICAGO (AP) — The second game of a scheduled doubleheader between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs was postponed Monday night due to thunderstorms in the area. It will be made up Tuesday afternoon as part of a day-night twinbill at Wrigley Field. Milwaukee opened the five-game series with a 7-0 victory Monday afternoon, thanks to six innings of one-hit ball from All-Star pitcher Freddy Peralta. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin each hit a solo home run to lead the Brewers to their 23rd victory in 28 games. At 79-45, the Brewers have the best record in the majors. White Sox hammer struggling Strider in win over Braves
Luis Robert Jr. homered to spark a six-run fourth inning and the Chicago White Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 13-9 on Monday night. Robert followed Andrew Benintendi's leadoff single against a struggling Spencer Strider with his 13th homer to put Chicago up 3-0. Mike Tauchman drove in two with a bases-loaded double, and Lenyn Sosa's two-out RBI single made it 7-0. Brooks Baldwin hit his eighth home run, a leadoff shot in the third to give Chicago the lead.
