Pulp's Jarvis Cocker says his writer's block ‘led the band to grind to a halt'

Glasgow Times2 days ago

The Britpop band, best known for their hit song Common People, will release their first album in over two decades, More, on June 6.
The frontman, 61, said he wrote the lyrics before going into the studio to 'make things easier'.
Speaking to the Big Issue, Cocker said: 'It's weird because we don't hang around with each other outside of the band any more, but I was aware of what the others were up to with various projects. But when you've made music with people for that many years, you have an unspoken understanding.
'I tried to make things easier by writing my lyrics before we went into the studio, for the first time ever. Because that's what kind of led the band to grind to a halt in the first place.
'It was taking me so long, I just felt embarrassed that the rest of the band were hanging around waiting for me to get my finger out.'
The group split in 2002 but got back together for occasional live performances including headlining Wireless Festival in Hyde Park and playing at Glastonbury in 2011.

They reunited again in 2023 for a series of UK and Ireland dates, but months before the tour was due to start bassist Steve Mackey died at the age of 56.
Cocker added: 'It sounds a bit crass, but Steve passed away just before our last tour and it made me realise that we only have a finite amount of time to do the things you want to do. And for Steve, it was no longer an option, but it was for us.'
Speaking about raising his son amid conversations about toxic masculinity he said: 'Women brought me up. All the males in our family just disappeared, and that had a significant effect on me.
'As for Andrew Tate, I did worry when my son first got his phone that he would encounter weird ideas about stuff. I thought, 'If I don't discuss certain subjects with him, then who will he learn from?''
The Sheffield group formed in 1978 and is currently made up of singer Cocker, keyboard player Candida Doyle, drummer Nick Banks and guitarist Mark Webber.
The band struggled to find success in their early days, releasing It (1983), Freaks (1987) and Separations (1992), before finding their audience during the 1990s Britpop era with their first UK top 40 single, Do You Remember The First Time? and subsequent His 'N' Hers album, in 1994.
In 1995, they gained nationwide fame with the release of the single Common People and the critically acclaimed Different Class album as well as their Glastonbury performance.
They have since had five UK top 10 singles and two number one albums.
The new album More is dedicated to bassist Mackey and is due to be released on June 6.

Meghan Markle's shows are just ‘rich housewife' hobbies – she throws mud at the wall to see what sticks

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MEGHAN Markle has gone from high-profile royal events to doing 'housewife hobby' TV shows, according to a royal expert. Since stepping down as a senior royal in 2020, the Duchess of Sussex, 43, has done a number of shows with Netflix, including her cooking programme, With Love, Meghan. 5 Meghan Markle is focusing on 'rich housewife' projects, according to a royal expert Credit: PA 5 Meghan recently released her With Love, Meghan Netflix show Credit: AP 5 Her show featured a host of celebrity pals and her hosting tips Credit: Netflix She's also launched her lifestyle brand, As Ever, which included £22 honey and £11 jam. Speaking on The Sun's Royal Exclusive show, broadcaster Esther Krakue said: 'They did really well because they sold out, how many units did you actually sell? She could have sold 50 jars and if it sold out, it sold out. 'She doesn't really know what she's doing, which is fine because you can hire people that do. 'But to go from selling jam and shortbread and all of that, which has reportedly sold out, to not restocking and then kind of having this haphazard view of what you're going to do next and potentially go into fashion, she doesn't know what she's doing. 'It's just a hobby. 'But that's fine because she's rich and hot. 'There's not a single person that looks to Meghan Markle as some sort of business or commercial genius or even competent. 'She doesn't need to be.' This follows Meghan hinting she won't restock As Ever products until the start of 2026, according to Fast Company. Instead she hopes to 'take a step back, gather data from the launch, and figure out exactly what As Ever could be.' Meghan is too vacuous. Why can't she promote women in a realistic way? She told the publication: 'I want to really focus on the hospitality angle of As Ever, but as we take the learnings, we can understand what the customer's needs are seasonally.' We could see Meghan leaning more into her fashion influencing, following the launch of her 'ShopMy' page featuring 'a hand-picked and curated collection of the things' she loves. An array of Meghan's shirts, bags and jewellery are all pinned on her page and available to buy. The duchess was asked by the publication if she'd like to capitalise more on this interest, she said: 'The category of fashion is something I will explore at a later date because I do think that's an interesting space for me.' 5 Prince Harry briefly featured on her Netflix show Credit: Instagram 5 You may have to wait to try Meghan's jam as she may not restock until 2026 Credit: Meghan's jams But the former Suits actress was forced to roll out her rebrand, As Ever, in February after being hit by a string of set backs. Her jams also featured in her eight-part Netflix docuseries With Love, Meghan, as she entertained Hollywood pals and celeb chefs. Shoppers also rushed to nab £9 teas, including lemon ginger, peppermint and hibiscus. These sold out alongside £12 flower sprinkles - promoted in endless shots throughout her Netflix show. However it has been debated whether Meghan used a 'marketing ploy' of making a 'relatively small amount available so it all gets bought and then you can say it's so popular it sold out." Meghan's As Ever products have been created in partnership with Netflix Consumer Group.

Aryna Sabalenka: TikTok dance was key to thawing relationship with Iga Swiatek

World number one Sabalenka and four-time champion Iga Swiatek will meet in a blockbuster French Open semi-final on Thursday. It will be the first time the duo, who have been jousting at the top of the rankings for the past three years, have played each other at a grand slam since the 2022 US Open. They barely used to speak until an impromptu bonding session at last year's WTA Finals in Riyadh. Iga Swiatek eased into the semi-finals (Jon Buckle/PA) 'Before it wasn't any communication, any practices with her, but now we are getting better,' said 27-year-old Sabalenka. 'We get along better and we practice more often and we know each other quite well. 'I think everything started when I just came to her and asked to do a TikTok in Riyadh. We just did, like, a little dance together. 'Since that, we were like 'OK, maybe we can communicate, we can be good to each other, we can practice sometimes'. Aryna Sabalenka is bidding for her first French Open title (Jon Buckle/PA) 'So I think that was the first step to a better relationship.' The blossoming friendship will be put on hold when Belarusian Sabalenka continues her bid for a first Roland Garros title against the player who has won her last 26 matches at the French Open. Sabalenka has reached the semi-finals in nine of the last 10 grand slams she has competed at after battling past Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng 7-6 (3) 6-3. It was a shame that the match between two top WTA stars began at 11am, meaning there were hundreds of empty seats around the vast Court Philippe-Chatrier. The scheduling of women's matches has been a hot topic again this fortnight, and Sabalenka said: 'I agree it was a big match and probably would make more sense to put us a little bit later just so more people could watch it.' Swiatek's patchy form since winning the title last year has seen her slip to number five in the rankings, but the 24-year-old from Poland remains the player to beat in Paris after a 6-1 7-5 quarter-final victory over Ukrainian 13th seed Elina Svitolina. The second semi-final will be decided on Wednesday with Coco Gauff taking on fellow American Madison Keys and Russian sixth seed Mirra Andreeva facing the French Open surprise package, world number 361 Lois Boisson.
