Rabiot, Rowe put up for sale by Marseille after bust-up

The Suna day ago
MARSEILLE duo Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe were placed on the club's transfer list Tuesday after a physical altercation following the 1-0 loss at Rennes in the Ligue 1 season opener.
France midfielder Rabiot and England Under-21 forward Rowe were involved in a heated exchange in the team's dressing room after Friday's match, which Rennes won with a stoppage-time goal despite playing for an hour with 10 men.
Marseille called the players' behaviour 'unacceptable' in a brief club statement which explained the decision to put both of them up for sale. Rabiot and Rowe were informed of the news on Monday, it said.
Rabiot's mother and agent, Veronique, told RTL radio earlier on Tuesday that Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi had taken the decision due to a 'lack of commitment'.
Marseille initially denied reports of a fight, but a source close to the club confirmed to AFP a report from French sports daily L'Equipe that said 'blows were exchanged between the two men'.
The 30-year-old Rabiot joined Marseille last season after five years with Juventus and helped the club qualify for the Champions League.
It is not his first run-in with club or country though, having left Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 after being sidelined for six months over a contract issue.
He also refused to go on France's standby list ahead of the 2018 World Cup and was not selected by coach Didier Deschamps for two years as a result.
Rowe, 22, signed from Norwich last year and scored three times in 28 games in his first season in Ligue 1. - AFP

Olympic champion Khelif denies retirement from boxing

ALGERIAN boxer and Olympic champion Imane Khelif on Wednesday denied claims made by her former manager that she was putting her career on hold. Khelif was at the centre of a gender row at the Paris Games where she won gold in the women's 66kg category. 'I would like to make it clear to the public that the reports of my retirement from boxing are false,' the 26-year-old Khelif wrote on her Facebook page. She accused her former manager, Nasser Yesfah, of 'betraying (her) trust and (her) country with his false and malicious statements'. 'This person no longer represents me in any way,' she said. 'I have never announced my retirement from boxing. I remain committed to my sporting career, I train regularly and I maintain my physical condition between Algeria and Qatar in preparation for upcoming events.' French newspaper Nice Matin earlier on Wednesday cited quotes from her former manager saying that she had hung up her gloves, without specifying whether it was for good. The world boxing championships are due to take place in Liverpool from September 4-14. The deadline to enter the event is on Monday - AFP

Celtic, Fenerbahce held to draws in Champions League play-offs

PARIS: Celtic's Champions League hopes are firmly in the balance after they were held to a goalless draw by Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan in Glasgow in the first leg of their play-off tie on Wednesday, while Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce played out a goalless draw with Benfica. The Scottish champions pushed Bayern Munich close in the knockout phase play-offs last season after finishing 21st out of 36 teams in the league stage. But Brendan Rodgers's team could not break down the champions of Kazakhstan, who have already come through three qualifying rounds to get to this stage and are eyeing a first ever appearance in the competition proper. James Forrest was denied by a great save from Kairat goalkeeper Aleksandr Zarutskiy right at the start of the second half from one of few clear chances that fell Celtic's way at Parkhead. At the other end, Brazilian Edmilson saw a chip from inside the centre circle for Kairat land on the roof of the net following a mistake by Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers. Daizen Maeda then found himself in behind the Kairat defence late on but could only shoot straight at substitute goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov. Celtic therefore have it all to do when they make the daunting trip east next week to Almaty, not far from Kazakhstan's border with China. "We're disappointed with the result and first-half performance. We didn't start with the intent and mentality we wanted to. We were quite passive," said Rodgers, whose team were booed off at full-time. "There's no doubt we can go there and win. Of course, you want to take an advantage with you, (but) it's still very much in the balance." Fenerbahce and Benfica played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their tie in Istanbul. The Portuguese giants, who lost in the last 16 last season to Barcelona, held on in the pressure cooker atmosphere in Turkey despite having midfielder Florentino sent off in the second half. Benfica therefore have the slight edge going into the return in Lisbon, but Fenerbahce are aiming to reach the Champions League proper for the first time since 2008/09. Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt look certain to reach the league phase of Europe's elite club competition for the first time after a stunning 5-0 home win over Austria's Sturm Graz. Kasper Hogh, Odin Bjortuft and Ulrik Saltnes all scored in the first 25 minutes for last season's Europa League semi-finalists. Hakon Evjen made it four early in the second half and a William Boving own goal completed the rout. Swiss champions Basel drew 1-1 at home to FC Copenhagen in heavy rain at St Jakob-Park. Xherdan Shaqiri's early penalty put Basel in front, but Gabriel Pereira equalised for the Danish side in first-half stoppage time.
