UNC-Chapel Hill forward Ven-Allen Lubin transfers to NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. (WGHP) — Name, Image and Likeness and the transfer portal have greatly altered the landscape of college basketball in recent years. That reality came to the forefront for Tobacco Road basketball fans earlier this week when University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill forward Ven-Allen Lubin transferred to rival North Carolina State University. NC State's new head coach, ,. 'It's gonna be a reckoning for the ACC': New NC State coach Will Wade says the 'Pack is Back' Lubin was a key contributor for the Tar Heels last season, playing in 37 games and making 20 starts. He averaged 8.7 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game in an average of 19.6 minutes per contest, . Lubin's role at UNC really crystallized down the stretch; he averaged 15.7 points per game and 11 rebounds during the ACC Tournament and was a key part in the Tar Heels . He arrived at UNC after spending a season at the University of Notre Dame and Vanderbilt University, making the Wolfpack his fourth team in as many seasons. 'We're thrilled to welcome Ven-Allen to our program. Physically, he stands out with a wingspan over seven feet and a strong, powerful frame. Offensively, he creates mismatches—he can score over smaller defenders in the post and has the quickness to drive past bigger ones. He also showed the ability while at Vanderbilt to step out and be a weapon from three-point range and we'll look to build off of that. He's an incredibly efficient scorer, having led his team in field goal percentage each of his first three college seasons. Beyond that, he has a high basketball IQ and will be a tremendous presence in our locker room.' NC State head coach Will Wade This is not the first time a former Tar Heel has donned an NC State jersey. Dontrez Styles, who was a member of the 2022 national runner-up UNC squad, played for the Wolfpack in 2024 after a year at Georgetown University. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. ESPN ranks UNC's 2026 football recruiting class in Top 25 nationally

ESPN ranks UNC's 2026 football recruiting class in Top 25 nationally Can UNC turn its strong 2026 recruiting class into results on the field? Barring late transfer portal commitments, the North Carolina Tar Heels have their football roster set for their 2025 season. There will be plenty new faces on UNC this fall, most of which came from the portal. A few notable additions for North Carolina include quarterback Gio Lopez (South Alabama), linebacker Mikai Gbayor (Missouri) and defensive tackle D'Antre Robinson (Florida), but those stars are only a few of many. The Tar Heels also fared well in their 2025 recruiting class, which is highlighted by 4-stars Bryce Baker and Jaylen McGill. Baker is an in-state quarterback from East Forsyth High School in Kernersville, while McGill, who previously committed to Rutgers, is a running back from Mountain View Prep in Spartanburg, S.C. Knowing the importance of its future, particularly with Bill Belichick now coaching, UNC has a strong start to its 2026 recruiting class. In ESPN CFB national recruiting coordinator Craig Haubert's latest Class of 2026 rankings, North Carolina has the 13th-ranked class. This is no change from the Tar Heels' previous ranking. "Unsurprisingly given his ethos, Bill Belichick is building North Carolina's 2026 class from the inside out," Haubert said. "In-state, four-star defensive tackle Trashawn Ruffin flipped from Texas A&M – and the 300-pounder has plenty of raw physicality to mold. Ruffin is one of several interior linemen in the class right now – and Belichick went to his former home base in Massachusetts, to bring in 335-pound guard Lenneil Hall. The Tar Heels also pulled a pair of three-star corners out of California, in Justin Lewis and Marcellous Ryan. High three-star athlete O'Mari Johnson further bolsters that unit, as he also projects to the secondary." "Now North Carolina is beginning to layer in skill players such as three-star receiver Darrion Kirksey, who picked the Tar Heels over offers from Ole Miss and Arkansas – and has outstanding short-area quickness," Haubert continued. "Davis can be a versatile back with the power to run between the tackles, but he also possesses good ball skills. As a junior, he rushed for more than 1,300 yards and also hauled in more than 50 receptions. UNC's top-ranked recruit in its 2026 class is Ruffin, who lands at 269th in ESPN's Top 300. With strong senior seasons, there could be even more Tar Heel commits joining this exclusive list. Bill Belichick needs to fire ‘distracting story' Jordon Hudson, ESPN pundit says

Bill Belichick has never been one to shy away from making a bold move if it meant bettering his football team and eliminating distractions. And ESPN's Paul Finebaum believes the UNC Tar Heels coach should have that same energy toward his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson. Advertisement 'That's been the distracting story all offseason,' Finebaum said on 'Get Up' on Wednesday. 'He has fired coaches, gotten rid of great players, he separated from the greatest quarterback of all-time — it's time for Bill Belichick to fire his girlfriend.' Belichick and Hudson have made several headlines since their relationship went public in 2024. The former New England Patriots coach was often out of the spotlight during his time in the NFL, but ever since Hudson came into the picture things have been different. Hudson has often been spotted at the UNC football facility, and it was revealed she had been copied on Belichick's e-mails — though the 73-year-old chalked it up to Hudson helping him filter through everything. Then there's Pablo Torre who's been relentlessly reporting on the couple. The podcaster revealed those around Belichick are afraid to deal with him because of Hudson, and that the 24-year-old leaves a 'trail of wreckage' wherever she goes. Advertisement Torre also reported that Belichick's family expressed 'deep worry' about the damage Hudson was doing to Belichick's legacy. Hudson accompanied Belichick to a recent interview with CBS Mornings and sternly shut down a question about how the duo met. Tony Dokoupil, who conducted the interview, said Hudson was a 'constant presence' during his time with Belichick. More fuel was added to that fire when 'The Pivot' co-host Channing Crowder revealed Hudson 'choreographed the open' of Belichick's interview with the podcast and 'had her paws' on the situation. Crowder later apologized and walked back what he said. Finebaum later added on 'Get Up' that North Carolina hired Belichick because of his track record in the NFL. And while he's happy for the couple, the distractions are hard to ignore. Advertisement 'He's a major distraction right now in this game of football,' Finebaum said.
