Does a school smartphone ban make a difference?

Does a school smartphone ban make a difference?

BBC News10 hours ago
Smart phones are part of modern life but the amount they are used can be a battleground, with parents and schools often on one side and young people on the other. So what would the effects be if children gave up their phones – even if just for a short time?Meghan was interested in ditching her device, but said her friends thought the idea of being without a smartphone – and the myriad apps within – was "ridiculous".The 15-year-old is one of 32 pupils who took part in a project at school to swap their high-tech handheld items for 'brick' phones, which can deal with calls but not be on the internet.Despite the doubts expressed by Meghan's peer group, she decided to hand over her phone as part of the three-week project at Ecclesfield Secondary School in South Yorkshire."I wanted to do it because I feel like the older I get the more I realised what you see on your phone can be harmful, so coming away from it could be nice," she explained. As well as pupils, four staff gave up their smart devices as part of the scheme, which was a collaboration between the school, Sheffield Hallam University, Mitie and Career Teachers.Did Meghan manage to survive without her internet and social media-connected phone for the project? She said it had been "easier" than she initially feared.
The time away from scrolling meant there had been more opportunities to do other things, Meghan said."I got more homework done but talking to my family more was my favourite thing," she said."Before if I was upset I'd go to my room and scroll on TikTok, but now I didn't have my phone so I chatted much more to my mum."The idea for the project came from Liz Hunter, who teaches Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education at Ecclesfield."You don't have to work in education to see the growing impact that modern mobile phones increasingly have on our children," she said.Ms Hunter said those who took part in the project had reported "so many positives, things like less anxiety, better friendships, better sleep, and more time to engage in other activities".Earlier this year, a Parliamentary bill that had suggested banning smartphones in schools and addictive algorithms aimed at young teenagers was watered down to gain government support.Head teacher Richard Walkden, who has been in charge for eight years as smartphone use has become a greater talking point across the UK, said he was proud of the students and staff who took part."My role is to protect childhood," he said."We banned mobile phones from school many years ago. They terrify me. They make kids grow up quicker."
A 14-minute film entitled Why Don't You?, made by firm Revealing Reality, which tracked the pupils' progress was premiered on 14 July in the main hall of the school.Other pupils the BBC spoke to also said they had found the phone break useful.David, 12, said the project had given him more time to help his dad working with wood."It was quite nice," he said. "I couldn't do the dangerous stuff but my dad helped me get involved and work with the resin."After receiving his phone back, he said he did not feel he had "missed out"."I just had a bunch of messages from my form groupchat full of stickers," he added.Beau, 13, took up fishing during the project using his grandad's kit."I went out almost every day," he said. But the teenager did confess to "missing" his phone when he caught a fish and wanted to "celebrate" with a picture.
Olivia said she had found the experience "quite freeing".The 15-year-old said: "I found it quite nice to not have the burden of replying to every message."But did the short project create long-term change?Olivia was in two minds. She admitted that although she now used her smartphone less, she had felt herself "slipping into old habits".Ofcom, the online safety regulator, reported in February 2024 that 99% of children spend time online and nine in 10 children own a mobile phone by the time they reach the age of 11. They also found three in five secondary school-aged children had been contacted online in a way that potentially made them feel uncomfortable.Ms Hunter said the school were now looking at how they could spread the message to encourage their children to live "less of their lives online."She said: "We're looking at our school policies for mobiles. We're wanting to do more work with parents, and we're also looking to work with our local primary schools to try and capture the children at a younger age and get them thinking about their phone use."

Jess Glynne finally meets Jet2 holiday voiceover star Zoe Lister as their aeroplane advert goes viral

Jess Glynne has finally met the Jet2 holiday voiceover star Zoe Lister after their aeroplane advert became the latest trend on TikTok. Their viral sound has been all over social media this summer - with users adding the soundtrack over clips of travel fails - and while their advert has become a favourite for influencers, Jess, 35, and Zoe, 43, have never officially met. Now the duo have given their fans what they wanted as they recreated the advert live in the Capital Breakfast studio. Speaking with Jordan North and Chris Stark on their morning show, Zoe revealed that she has developed such a close bond with the singer that she feels she is 'in her band'. Referring to the song, Jordan said: 'It genuinely is a banger. You go in any club, and it sounds so good.' To which Chris said: 'But it's wild how you always hear that song whenever you go on a plane and then it's in the advert. 'And then, for reasons no one really understands, this summer, it just exploded on TikTok. Has it surprised you how massive this has all gone?' Jess replied: 'Yeah, it's a massive surprise one hundred per cent. It's the most amazing thing to see though. 'It's mad because I feel like when I do my gigs, I feel like when I go to sing the hook, I feel like they're waiting for me to go ''nothing beats a Jet 2 holiday''. It is tempting but I need to take this seriously it can't be a joke.' Chris replied: 'Well, we want to make this moment happen Jess. I'm not going to lie we want to do something very special this morning. 'The whole of the UK is so excited about this. I've had so many messages over the weekend. So, we've not just invited you guys. 'Obviously Rudimental are here, Jess Glynne you're here, we've also invited the voice of the Jet 2 holiday advert. She's here, please welcome to the show Zoe! To which Zoe quipped: 'We're bonded I feel like I'm basically in your band now To finish the conversation, Chris said: 'The dream here is getting you guys to do the sound, that everyone is hearing, live together!' Speaking with Jordan North and Chris Stark on their morning show, Zoe revealed that she has developed such a close bond with the singer that she feels she is 'in her band' It took a while for people to realise that the voice behind the viral - and widely spoofed - Jet2Holidays advert belongs to the British soap actress. The UK-based organisation's ad, which features popstar Jess's 'Hold My Hand', shows a family of four enjoying a fun-filled holiday abroad while the voiceover skips through the offers and discounts available. The high-energy voice that viewers hear throughout the 30-second 'Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday' ad has become almost as distinctive as Glynne's UK chart-topping track - but until recently people had no idea that it belonged to ex-Hollyoaks actress Zoë. Zoe played Zoe Carpenter in the Channel 4 show between 2006 and 2010, making a brief return in April 2017. A writer as well as a performer, mother-of-two Zoe has also contributed to 56 episodes of the soap, which marked its 30th anniversary this year. Other past acting jobs include roles in Midsomer Murders, Crime Stories and Staff Room. According to her management company Harvey Voice's website, she has been the voice of Jet2Holidays for four years. Yet, it was only relatively recently that the mother-of-two revealed herself as the voice of the ad on TikTok - much to fans' delight.

Love Island spoilers: Yasmin and Dejon finally clear the air after brutal snub as he celebrates huge milestone with Meg

Love Island's Yasmin and Dejon finally clear the air after locking horns, before Dejon celebrates a huge milestone with Meg during Monday's episode of the programme. It's fair to say that the most recent episodes of the ITV2 dating show have been full of dramatic twist and turns. Sunday's instalment saw the Islanders take part in a kissing game - after which fans slammed 'disrespectful' Dejon for his 'rude' behaviour towards Yasmin. And this evening (July 21 2025), fans will see the pair put their awkward argument behind them. Dejon pulls Yasmin for a chat and says: 'First off, I just want to say apologies for yesterday when you came over to have a conversation and I said no. 'I felt bad… like I denied you that opportunity.' 'For me it was more so in the challenge, you gave me a zero… I would've had more respect if you'd have said something like "I didn't kiss her out of respect for Meg as we're exclusive" but you made out like it was me,' Yasmin tells him. But Dejon tells her that he was 'just making jokes'. So Yasmin tells him: 'It sounded like it was on me, that's why it got my back up a little bit.' Dejon says to Yasmin: 'I was just joking but if you took it offensively, I apologise.' And Yasmin jokes: 'I hope that pasta was good, though.' Dejon also gets to go on a date with Meg. She receives a text which says: 'Meg, it's time for you and Dejon to capture some memories on a romantic sunset date. 'Please get ready to leave the Villa. #TeamPixel #GoldenHour.' The pair, who have been together from the very start of the series, chat about how they think their families will perceive them. Dejon says: 'Our first date, first time out the Villa, everything has led up to this…' Love is definitely in the air as Conor and Shakira also have a serious conversation about their feelings. Conor tells her: 'We're both saying we're open, and single… I don't want it to be, but I suppose that's what it is until it isn't.' But Shakira tells him: 'I only want to speak to you.' 'Sometimes I feel like I give more energy than you do,' Conor confesses. Shakira then opens up about why she thinks he feels that way. She says: 'Yeah, because I've put my walls up because I've been hurt. And when you start to like someone, then you put yourself at risk of being hurt. And I don't know if you're 100%...' He tries to tell her that he isn't interested in anyone else. 'For you? I'm like 200% for you,' Conor he presses. Shakira then confesses to him that she really likes him, but the past drama in the villa has made her put her guard up. 'I really like you, but I don't want you to hurt me. Harry really hurt me and it was really hard. 'He really made a fool out of me and it hurt,' she says. Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
