Belated controversy over remark by Germany's Scholz at private party
At the party, Scholz reportedly again accused challenger Friedrich Merz of the centre-right CDU/CSU of angling his party toward a tacit alliance with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), something Merz has strenuously denied.
Another guest at the party, Berlin's culture minister, Joe Chialo, reportedly challenged Scholz's remarks - leading the chancellor to shoot back that "every party has their court jesters," according to a report by FOCUS magazine, whose editor-in-chief was also at the event.
The magazine accused Scholz of racism with the remark about Chialo, who is black. The chancellor vehemently denied any such allegation.
"The term I used here has no racist connotations and was never intended to be used in this way," Scholz said in a statement on Wednesday released by his centre-left Social Democrats. "The accusation of racism is absurd and artificially constructed."
Chialo declined to comment on the incident. A spokesman for his ministry in Berlin confirmed that there had been an "incident" at an event attended by Scholz and Chialo, but said that he "will not comment further."
The birthday party took place about 10 days ago, but was only revealed in the FOCUS report on Wednesday, less than two weeks before the February 23 elections in Germany.
Scholz is trying to mount a comeback and secure a second term as chancellor in the campaign against Merz, who is widely viewed as the front-runner to defeat him.

'All of these are demonstrative strikes that only confirm the need to put pressure on Moscow, the need to impose new sanctions and tariffs until diplomacy is fully effective,' he added. NATO flies jets over Romania-Ukraine border during Russian attack
Aug. 20 (UPI) -- NATO deployed two German fighter jets in its airspace in response to a Russian drone attack on Ukraine, officials in Romania said Wednesday. The Romanian Ministry of National Defense ts aerial surveillance system "identified groups of drones launched by the Russian Federation, which attacked the Ukrainian ports on the Danube," late Tuesday into early Wednesday. In a NATO response, two German Air Force Typhoon planes that had already been stationed at Romania's 57th Air Base to help keep the nation's airspace secure were scrambled to monitor the country's border with Ukraine in the Romanian county of Tulcea. According to the Defense Ministry, no aerial vehicles of any sort were found to intrude into Romanian airspace and the jets returned to the airbase without issue. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyconfirmed Wednesday that a gas distribution station in the country's Odesa region, which borders Tulcea County, was among several places attacked by Russia during the overnight. The ministry had previously reported earlier this month it had contacted NATO after Russian forces launched a drone attack on Ukraine near the Romanian border, close enough to set off warning alerts in northern Tulcea. NATO had announced in July that German fighter jets were being deployed to Romania for eight months as part of the alliance's air policing mission in southeastern Europe, taking over for the Italian Air Force, which was previously handling that task.
