POPE memecoin soars 770% amid speculation over papal succession
A cryptocurrency inspired by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin soared in value on Monday, as online speculation intensified over who might succeed the late Pope Francis, reported Benzinga.
A Solana-based token named POPE, themed around Cardinal Parolin, jumped 770 per cent in the past 24 hours, reaching a market cap of $260,930, according to CoinMarketCap. Another memecoin honouring Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, also skyrocketed by 1,012 per cent during the same period.
Both tokens are thinly traded and currently available only on Raydium, a decentralised exchange built on the Solana network. CoinMarketCap has issued a disclaimer, noting that these tokens are not yet verified and advising traders to 'do your own research (DYOR).'
The surge in these religious-themed memecoins comes as the world waits to see who will become the next head of the Catholic Church. Pope Francis passed away at age 88, leaving a vacancy at the highest level of the Vatican.
On Polymarket, a crypto-based prediction platform, Cardinal Parolin leads the betting with a 34 per cent chance of becoming the next pope. Cardinal Tagle follows with 23 per cent. So far, over $3 million has been bet on the outcome.
Another prediction market shows a 65 per cent chance that the next pope will be European, and a 22 per cent chance that he will be Asian. Cardinal Parolin is Italian, while Cardinal Tagle is from the Philippines.

Abu Dhabi state oil firm makes USD 18.7 billion bid for Australia's Santos
SYDNEY: Abu Dhabi's state-owned oil company is leading an USD 18.7 billion takeover bid for Australian energy group Santos as it seeks to build a global natural gas giant, the two firms said Monday. Santos' board said it planned to unanimously recommend the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company's offer to shareholders if it can agree on the takeover terms. Adelaide-based Santos has operations in Australia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and the United States, and is a major supplier of liquefied natural gas in Australia and Asia. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company offered USD 5.76 a share in a bid for all of Santos' outstanding stock, valuing the entire company at USD 18.7 billion. The price per share is 28 percent higher than Santos' closing level on Friday. It was the "final, non-binding" offer from the Middle East oil company, which had offered two, lower confidential bids in March, Santos said. Santos' stock was more than 11 percent higher in afternoon trade on the Australian Securities Exchange. The Abu Dhabi-based, state-owned energy firm made its bid via a consortium led by its own subsidiary, XRG. Other members of the consortium include Abu Dhabi Development Holding Company and global investment firm Carlyle. In a statement, XRG said it aimed to build on Santos' legacy as a trusted energy producer, "strengthening domestic and international energy security." "The proposed transaction is aligned with XRG's strategy and ambition to build a leading integrated global gas and LNG business," it said. Santos' board said it intended to "unanimously recommend" that shareholders vote in favour of the deal if it can agree on terms and there is no better offer.

Earlier on June 14, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, said that India is firmly on track to become the world's third-largest economy by 2029, crediting 11 years of Narendra Modi's "decisive and corruption-free governance" for triggering what he described as an "unstoppable surge" in national development. Addressing a press conference in Dibrugadh to mark the NDA government's 11th anniversary, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister said that India has emerged from an era of "policy paralysis and dynastic politics" and is now driven by welfare-led growth, youth-powered innovation, and massive infrastructure expansion. "This is a new India, led by young dreamers and doers. Over 1.7 crore youth are now part of this vibrant startup movement."

German regulator pushes for more fan control of soccer clubs like Bayer Leverkusen
BONN, Germany — Top German soccer clubs including Bayer Leverkusen and Leipzig face the prospect of handing over more control to fans after a regulator intervened. A statement Monday from Germany's antitrust regulator, the Federal Cartel Office, said it wants to see tighter enforcement of the rule known as 50-plus-1 which requires a soccer club's membership to have majority voting rights over how the team is run. The regulator said recent European court rulings suggest permanent exemptions from 50-plus-1 for last year's champion Leverkusen and fellow top-tier club Wolfsburg seem 'no longer possible.' It said efforts should be made in the future to ensure the club's professional soccer operations come under the control of membership organizations, but didn't name any deadline. Leverkusen and Wolfsburg were founded as workers' teams at major companies which own the clubs, with pharmaceutical giant Bayer at Leverkusen, and car manufacturer Volkswagen at Wolfsburg. Their long-term involvement led to the clubs getting exemptions from 50-plus-1. The regulator also said the German men's soccer league needs to ensure the clubs it oversees 'offer their fans the opportunity to become a new full member with voting rights.' That appears to affect Leipzig and its relationship with drinks giant Red Bull, though they weren't directly named by the regulator in Tuesday's statement. The club was founded by Red Bull in 2009 and is part of its international network of soccer clubs. It grants voting rights to far fewer people than most German clubs. Local media reported that only 23 members had the right to vote at Leipzig as of last year. soccer: /hub/soccer
