Carlos Alcaraz seeking third straight Wimbledon title and sixth major

That's something only four men have achieved in the Open era, which began in 1968: Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.
Not bad company.
Alcaraz is 5-0 in Grand Slam finals, which includes going 2-0 at the French Open — which he won three weeks ago via a comeback from two sets down against No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final — and 1-0 at the US Open.

Last year, the No. 2-ranked Alcaraz became the youngest man to win a major trophy on each surface: grass, clay, and hard courts.

But he's got a fondness for the green stuff.
'The most beautiful tennis that we can watch is on grass. The style that the people bring to the court when they play on grass . . . The sound of the ball,' said Alcaraz, who will go into Monday on a career-best 18-match winning streak, including a title at the Queen's Club tournament last weekend. 'The movement is really tough, but when you get it, it's kind of [as though] you're flying.'
He loves that it allows him to show off the variety in his game and all of the skills he possesses.

Few players smile as much as Alcaraz does while in the thick of things, no matter what challenges might be presented by the foe across the net or the tension of the moment. He is as creative as it gets with a racket in hand, sometimes to his own detriment, and admits enjoying seeing replays on arena video screens after some of his best deliveries.
'I really want to hit slices, drop shots, going to the net all the time, playing aggressively,' said Alcaraz, who said he lost to two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray during a round of golf early in the week. 'I think on grass it's the style that you have to play, so that's what I like the most.'
Other Grand Slam champions in action on Day 1 — when the temperature is expected to be around 90 degrees — include No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka against Carson Branstine, a qualifier making her Grand Slam debut; No. 6 Madison Keys, the Australian Open champion in January, against Elena-Gabriela Ruse; 2023 Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova against No. 32 McCartney Kessler; and 2021 US Open champ Daniil Medvedev against Benjamin Bonzi.
Others in action: 2024 Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini, 2024 US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz, and three-time major finalist Alexander Zverev.
It's instructive to hear what Djokovic had to say about Alcaraz after a straight-set loss in last year's final.
'He just was better than me in every aspect of the game,' Djokovic said. 'In movement, in the way he was just striking the ball beautifully, serving great. Everything.'
Those words carry weight. Djokovic has won seven of his men's-record 24 Grand Slam trophies at Wimbledon but was the runner-up to Alcaraz in 2023 and 2024.

When it comes to the idea of joining an elite group by completing a three-peat in two weeks' time, Alcaraz insisted that isn't the sort of thing he really cares about or spends time considering.
He wants the title, yes. But where it would place him in history? Leave that to others.
'I really want to lift the trophy,' Alcaraz said. 'But right now, I'm not thinking about who I could join if I win three Wimbledons in a row.'

College star Oliver Tarvet wins in Slam debut at Wimbledon and could face Alcaraz next

Oliver Tarvet changed into his University of San Diego gear moments after a straight-set victory in his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon on Monday. The 21-year-old British qualifier, who is ranked No. 733, beat Leandro Reidi of Switzerland 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. A bigger test awaits the communications major in the second round: he'll play either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Fabio Fognini. 'I'm just really overjoyed to be in this situation,' he told the BBC in an on-court interview. 'It's my first tour-level event. To come out here, come through qualifying, and also win first round at Wimbledon, have a chance to play maybe Carlos on Wednesday is just truly incredible. It's just a dream come true.' Tarvet hugged friends moments after his victory on Court No. 4 and took a San Diego cap from one of them. He then changed out of his shirt and donned a T-shirt with a similar 'SD' logo. Collegiately, Tarvet was recently named the West Coast Conference player of the year for the second straight year.

British Open announces 'last-chance qualifier' ahead of 2026 tournament at Royal Birkdale

The R&A announced a series of changes coming to the British Open in 2026, perhaps none more exciting than a winner-take-all "last chance" qualifier. The Open Championship will be at Royal Birkdale in England next year, and this new qualifier will take place on the Monday of tournament week. You like Monday qualifiers, well, here ya go. The R&A, in a statement announcing several fan-centric initiatives, said that the qualifier will be held at Royal Birkdale: The Last-Chance Qualifier on Monday 13 July will generate drama and excitement for fans as up to 12 players chase their dream of playing in The Open by competing over 18 holes of the iconic Southport links to decide who earns the final place in the field ahead of the draw being announced. The R&A also announced the launch of the Heroes Classic in which several past Open champions and special guests will take part "in a short-format challenge" on Tuesday, July 14. Ahead of all this, on Sunday, July 12, 2026, the R&A will have fans gather in the spectator village where on several big screens will be the men's final of Wimbledon and the final round of the PGA Tour's Genesis Scottish Open. Many of the British Open participants compete in the Scottish Open. The R&A says many of these initiatives came about from a fan survey it conducted in which fans said they wanted "more opportunities to watch live golf, celebrate the Championship's unique traditions and enjoy activities which allow them to further engage with the sport onsite." How to get tickets to the 2026 British Open Fans interested in getting tickets to the Open need to first create a free account in the digital membership club dubbed One Club. Go to to do that. Ticket prices range from $40 (£30) for the Sunday, July 12, opening day to $205 (£150) for the Sunday final round in 2026. There were more than 1.2 million ticket applications filed last year for the 2025 Open. Ticket applications for the 2026 Open Championship can be submitted until July 25, 2025.

Protesters urge Wimbledon to cut ties with Barclays over Israel business deals

LONDON (AP) — Pro-Palestinian protesters urged Wimbledon to drop Barclays as a sponsor Monday because of the British bank's business dealings with Israel. About two dozen protesters from Palestine Solidarity Campaign demonstrated by the main entrance of the All England Club as thousands of fans arrived for Day 1 of the tournament. 'They're the bank for the arms companies that are obviously supplying weapons to Israel,' protester Khalid Zalmay told The Associated Press. 'We should not be arming Israel, we should not be allowing anybody to facilitate arming them, and I think ties should be cut with Israel, the same way that ties were cut with Russia.' One protester held a sign that said Barclays is a 'sponsor of Wimbledon and genocide.' Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack that sparked the Israel-Hamas war. Israel's military response has led to the death of 56,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. It says more than half of the dead were women and children. 'We provide a range of financial services and products to companies supplying defense products to the UK, NATO and its allies,' the company statement said. 'As NATO, the EU and UK seek to increase their defense capabilities in response to increasing geopolitical threats, the provision of financial products and services to the defense sector is becoming increasingly important.' ___
