Actress Clare McCann in emotional plea for help to have son's body cryogenically frozen

7NEWS27-05-2025
A Sydney actress has launched a radical bid to have her son's body cryogenically frozen.
Atreyu McCann, 13, took his own life last week after what his mum Clare McCann, 32, said was months of relentless, violent bullying at school in NSW.
McCann claims no students were suspended or expelled for their treatment of her child, and that she feels completely let down.
The Education Department said the school tried to help, but McCann said through tears it did 'nothing'.
She believes medical science could one day bring her 'intelligent, kind, sweet' boy back and give him a second chance to live the life he deserved.
'Maybe it might not ever happen, but if there's a chance, you know he deserves this chance,' she told 7NEWS.
Australia's only cryogenics facility has agreed to try
'100 per cent sure we're not certain. No guarantees, but there's a reasonable probability,' Southern Cryonics' Peter Tsolakides said.
As an actress, McCann revealed Tuesday's interview at their favourite walk and surf spot in Maroubra was her hardest ever moment on camera.
She says she had to do it to help fight school bullying and to get community support for her dreams for her son.
'I just want to be with him anyway I can and so I'm placing my bets everywhere. I'm doing everything I can,' McCann said.
A GoFundMe has been launched to help her reach her $300,000 target.
'We only have one chance left to cryogenically preserve his body within the next seven days,' she said.
'If we miss this window, we lose the chance for any future revival that science may offer.
'This is about hope and justice. Refusing to let my son's story end in silence.'
Any money raised above the target will be put towards a national anti-bullying campaign, legal action and 'support for other families impacted by systemic negligence'.

Major development in hunt for Chinese man who allegedly poured hot coffee on baby at Brisbane park

Australian authorities are urging Beijing to take action over a Chinese national wanted for allegedly throwing hot coffee over a nine-month-old boy in Brisbane almost a year ago. According to a report in The Australian on Monday, Australian authorities have been trying to find a resolution after the identity of the suspect was confirmed. The Chinese national reportedly flew out of Sydney just days after the attack, in August 2024. Queensland Police have reportedly given a brief of evidence on the alleged offender. However, China does not extradite its own citizens for prosecutions in foreign countries. According to the report, Queensland authorities have been unwilling to discuss the move or detail any proposed deal with their Chinese counterparts. Baby Luka and his mother were having a picnic in Hanlon Park at about midday on August 27 when a stranger tipped a thermos of hot coffee over the baby and fled. The infant suffered serious burns to his face, upper body and arms and has endured multiple surgeries at Queensland Children's Hospital. A warrant is out for the arrest of the accused attacker, believed to be a 33-year-old Chinese national, who remains on the run overseas after fleeing Australia. In October last year, police confirmed they knew the identity of the suspect. Last year, acting assistant police commissioner Andrew Massingham told 4BC that authorities were 'committed to finding the individual responsible' for the alleged attack. 'Our international search continues for the person that committed that horrendous crime,' he said. Massingham also told the station attack has now left the child with 'injuries for life'. Previously, Luka's mother, who had revealed she had panic attacks after the attack, said her baby boy seemed like his happy self again. 'He's really strong and resilient and brave,' she told 7NEWS. She told local media that, despite the outpouring of support from the public, she was still 'very angry' that the alleged assailant had fled the country and feared he could hurt someone else. 'I think the whole of Australia, especially a lot of mums and people with children, are furious and angry and really want this guy caught,' the mother told KIIS 97.3 radio. 'I am very angry and saddened that this has happened ... and that we have to wait maybe years to get justice. 'My main focus is my son, but this guy does come into my thoughts all the time because I just get really, really angry that he could do such a thing to a defenceless baby.' She said she wants the man to return to Australia 'for justice'. 'I don't want him to just get away with this and to live a normal life wherever he is because we're going to be living in trauma for a number of years to come.'

Father stabbed 11 times protecting his family from armed intruders

A family in Kew East was the victim of a violent home invasion by a group of armed intruders. The homeowner was stabbed, his parents were slashed, and his wife was held at knifepoint, while their two young children were sleeping. A family, including two children, have been terrorised by a group of intruders during a home invasion which left a man seriously injured. Five people allegedly broke into a home on Oxford St in Kew East, Melbourne, about 4am on Sunday. They arrived in a car, jumped over a front fence and smashed the window of a study to get inside. A husband and wife were awoken by the sound and confronted by the offenders. Two of the offenders were allegedly armed with a machete, a knife and garden sheers belonging to the family. The couple were put in separate rooms, with the 34-year-old woman kept in the room where her children, aged two and three, were sleeping. A scuffle broke out between the 39-year-old husband and the offenders, during which he was stabbed 11 times suffering injuries to his head, face and arms. 'They're not used to people fighting back, and this homeowner fought back,' Detective Sergeant Leeanne Trusler said. The man's parents, who were also living at the home, went to his aid but were also attacked. At one point the wife had come out of the room with her children to check on her husband, Trusler said. One of the offenders pointed a knife at her and demanded she go back inside the room. 'These males have then asked the family if there's a safe inside the house, which they said there wasn't,' Trusler said. Police at the scene. Credit: 7NEWS Police arrested three people however are still hunting for the remaining offenders. Credit: 7NEWS The intruders then left the home via the garage, allegedly jumping in the family's BMW. A fifth offender left the home in the car the intruders all initially came in. About 30 minutes later, the BMW was involved in a crash in Sunshine, with the stolen car found dumped on Christie St in Deer Park. Three people, a 17-year-old boy, 24-year-old Caroline Springs man and a 16-year-old boy, were arrested a short time later on Hamilton St. The 39-year-old father who fought back was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He suffered a fractured arm, will require surgery to his eye and was treated for his stab wounds. The 34-year-old wife and mother was treated for minor injuries while her in-laws, aged 69 and 70-years-old, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The grandparents have since been discharged from hospital. A fifth adult and the two children were not injured. Detective Sergeant Leeanne Trusler. Credit: 7NEWS Trusler said there was nothing to indicate the attack on the family was premeditated. She said a home invasion like this was 'different' and that usually intruders will just sneak into home, steal what they want, and then sneak out. 'I've never seen anything like this, this is awful. A family … asleep in their home, nearly four o'clock in the morning, the house is secure, they're meant to be safe,' Trusler said. 'There's no logic. 'They've just chosen this house and they've just destroyed a family.' The two children slept through the ordeal, Trusler said. She said the family were struggling however their neighbours were being extremely supportive. 'You should be safe, you shouldn't be disrespected in your home and having people come in at that time of night and doing that to your family, I don't know how I'd be if that was my family,' Trusler said. On Sunday night, a 24-year-old man and two teenagers, aged 17 and 16, were all charged with aggravated home invasion, intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury, false imprisonment, theft of mobile phone and theft of motor vehicle. They were all remanded to appear in court at a later date. The other offenders remain on the run. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV/dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Massive drone carries national flag in breathtaking Ekka moment in Brisbane

It's the Royal Queensland Show moment turning every head skyward: a car-sized drone soaring above the arena, towing a massive six-metre Aussie flag over the main arena timed perfectly with the national anthem. 'It's definitely the first time this has been done in Australia,' said Nick Kozij from Skylighter, the company behind the spectacle. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today 'The drone has a huge payload and a whole lot of wow factor.' This was developed in partnership with MAD Drones who, prior to this collaboration, had only ever used drones on large farms. 'We're normally in agriculture, spraying, seeding,' said MAD's chief pilot Marcelo Pullen. 'But this was something special. It literally took flight.' The drone and flag combo soared through rigorous safety protocols, Civil Aviation approvals and secret test runs. 'We did a few more tests actually here in the RNA [Showgrounds]. We had to come in under the cover of 'we were going to do some spraying' and we quickly tested each time and got it down before anybody could get a photo because we wanted to keep it a surprise,' Pullen said. 'Wind, drag, visibility — we had to account for everything,' Kozij explained. 'We even built a custom rig to hold the flag upright mid-air.' With Brisbane hospital helipads nearby and strict no-fly zones in place, the team mapped a precise flight path. 'Rule number one is if you're not willing to land on it, you don't fly over it,' Pullen explained. 'The two-by-two metre drone is locked to a certain altitude and flight path as well. So we can't encroach outside the arena.' The Australian first draws a big 'wow' every night. 'And even while we're sitting here waiting to go in, I think there's probably been about 10,000 photos taken of the drone today, which has been pretty cool,' Kozij said. 'Every night, it's thousands of photos. People are stunned. It's a moment. A real moment.'
