Text-to-Pay available for downtown parking
On April 23, the city of Sioux Falls applied new labels on some parking meters along Phillips Ave. that explain the city's newest payment option: Text-to-Pay.
'Text-to-Pay is kind of the emerging trend and we like some of the security features built into it,' Matthew Nelson, public parking manager for the city of Sioux Falls, said.
Nelson said the Text-to-Pay feature is simple and convenient:
Text the code on the parking meter to receive a secured link to pay with a credit card.
Remotely extend parking time from a phone.
Saved payment and car information will be under the phone number used for texting, no need to fill-in information every time for repeated parking.
Nelson said Text-to-Pay doesn't pay for the physical meter, 'you're actually paying for your license plate.' This means that parking enforcers will identify vehicles based on the license plate number and not based on time from the meter, Nelson explained.
'If there's ever an issue, we can just go back and look at your plate number and easily find your payments,' Nelson said.
Nelson said the overall system cost the city $1,000 to install, for all the configuration and integration on the system.
Text-to-Pay includes a 45 cent convenience fee. Nelson explained the convenience fee covers all the credit card charges and the software cost to run that transaction, and it's a user-based fee.
'It's a low cost option and if people want to avoid that fee, they can certainly still pay with coins,' Nelson said. 'But, we do see it as a great option, an additional add-on service to our customers.'
Nelson said there's still many free ways to park downtown if people desire more options.
To pay to park downtown, the city of Sioux Falls offers three total options:
Text-to-Pay
Payment Kiosks: pay with cash, coins, or credit card at the parking meter.
Park Smarter App: log in to an account for mobile payments, available in the Apple or Google Play stores.
According to the city's website, the current standard parking rate is $1.50 per hour 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. As of April 23, parking ramps and lots are free after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.
Starting May 1, parking fees will apply on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The city of Sioux Falls offers an updated, detailed parking map for availability, rates, parking locations.
Even though you can still use the Park Smarter App now, the city of Sioux Falls will phase out the app over time, according to Nelson.
'We've had some compatibility issues with that app and it is getting dated,' Nelson said. 'So, just to make it more convenient for our staff and for customers to avoid issues, this is the best fully-integrated solution that we can bring.'
QR codes won't be phased out, Nelson explained, but its use will be limited in the future. QR codes on downtown parking meters referred individuals to two options: a site to download the Park Smarter App, or a meter number to use inside the app.
'We're very careful about using QR codes in a place where they could easily be scammed or duplicate,' Nelson said.
As of April 23, Nelson said there's been no verified reports of fraud, duplication, or scams on downtown parking meters.

This trending deal at Best Buy gets you a MacBook for under $700
Whether you're going back to college or just need a new MacBook, now seems to be the time to buy. Rare Apple deals are popping up everywhere as the school bells start to ring and shoppers are making tariff-affected decisions. Let's look at just one of these deals today, and a darn good one at that. Presently, you can get a 13-inch MacBook Air Laptop with an M2 chip for just $699. That's a new MacBook for under $700, and a savings of $100 off the usual $799. Tap the button below to see it yourself, or keep reading to remind yourself of the capabilities of the M2 chip, as well as see more about what the laptop is capable of in full. Why you should buy the MacBook Air M2 Despite what Apple may want you to think, it's the numbers that make up a laptop. This 13-inch MacBook Air M2 Laptop has 16GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage, and a battery life that goes up to 18 hours. All for less than $700 while this deal is on. Then there's the 2560 x 1664 resolution screen (which will look great on 13-inches), Thunderbolt ports, and even a (rare for Apple) headphone jack. Great, great, and great. Clearly, this laptop has good stats. One thing that may worry you, however, is the fact that it has an M2 chip. The latest MacBooks have an M4 chip, after all. But is 2 really half of 4? Not necessarily. Beyond our Apple M2 chip explainer, which explains that the chip supports up to 24GB of RAM (among other stats), there's an incredibly great resource that compares the M2 vs the M3 chip. While there's a lot of nitty gritty, the key line is this: 'There's much less of a difference between the M3 MacBook Air and the M2 MacBook Air than in the previous generation jump.' You're still getting incredibly quality from the MacBook Air M2, beyond what numbers may suggest. The 13-inch MacBook Air with an M2 chip at $699 is undoubtedly a good deal. And, it's yours (along with the $100 in savings off of the usual $799 price) if you tap the button below. Alternatively, check out these other amazing laptop deals if you want to scout for something outside of the Apple ecosystem.

Elon Musk is threatening to sue Apple for what he says are antitrust violations related to Grok's rankings
Elon Musk said on Monday that xAI will take "immediate legal action" against Apple for its bias toward OpenAI on its App Store. "Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation," Musk wrote in an X post. xAI and Apple did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. Earlier, Musk had asked Apple on X why its App Store had not placed X higher in the rankings. Musk said X deserved the spot for being "the #1 news app in the world." "Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know," Musk added. As of press time, OpenAI's ChatGPT is ranked first on the App Store, while Grok is ranked fifth. "Unfortunately, what choice do we have? Apple didn't just put their thumb on the scale, they put their whole body!" Musk wrote on X on Monday.

Musk Accuses Apple of Unfairly Favoring OpenAI Among iPhone Apps
Elon Musk lashed out against Apple Inc. 's app store practices late on Monday, accusing the iPhone maker of favoring OpenAI. The billionaire founder of xAI Holdings, which now houses the Grok artificial intelligence team and X social network, said Apple makes it impossible for anyone other than OpenAI to reach the top of the App Store charts, a sought-after global spotlight for app developers. In a pinned post on his X account, Musk asked if Apple is 'playing politics' by not highlighting his products.
