‘Need urgent unity of Opposition parties': Mamata on Assam govt's NRC notice to Bengal resident

Indian Express08-07-2025
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock after a Coochbehar resident in the state was served an NRC notice by the Assam government, calling it 'a systemic assault on democracy'.
She posted on X, 'I am shocked and deeply disturbed to learn that the Foreigners Tribunal in Assam has issued an NRC notice to Uttam Kumar Brajabasi, a Rajbanshi and resident of Dinhata in Cooch Behar for over 50 years. Despite furnishing valid identity documents, he is being harassed on suspicion of being a 'foreigner/illegal migrant'.'
Banerjee claimed, '… It is proof that the ruling BJP dispensation in Assam is attempting to implement NRC in Bengal, where it holds no power or jurisdiction. A premeditated attempt is being made to intimidate, disenfranchise, and target marginalised communities. This unconstitutional overreach is anti-people, and exposes the BJP's dangerous agenda of bulldozing democratic safeguards and erasing the identity of Bengal's people.'
She said that the alleged incident calls for 'urgent unity' among all Opposition parties against the BJP's 'divisive and oppressive machinery'.
Brajabasi claimed he never went outside the Coochbehar district and that his family has been residents of the area for five generations. The notice mentioned that he has to prove his Indian citizenship by July 15, claiming that his family entered from the Assam border in the 1970s. Brajabasi said he is afraid he will be sent to a detention camp.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA and leader Sushil Barman said, 'This is another baseless campaign of TMC. There is no truth in it. If this happened, the West Bengal government has to take responsibility for this.'
North Bengal Development Minister and Dinhata TMC MLA Udayan Guha said, 'The BJP is basically anti-Bengali. They are taking revenge on Bengalis because Bengal never voted for the BJP.
The Trinamool Congress on their official X handle posted, 'A resident of Dinhata, Cooch Behar is being hunted like a criminal by Assam's Foreigners Tribunal. Despite submitting every valid identity proof, he's being hounded and asked to cough up electoral rolls from every election between 1966 and 2008…'

‘Enforcing Trump's call for justice': Read full statement as US designates LeT proxy TRF as terrorist organisation

The United States designated The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as a foreign terrorist organisation. The TRF had claimed responsibility for the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22 that had killed 26 people. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a detailed statement in this regard on July 17. Read full statement here: "Today, the Department of State is adding The Resistance Front (TRF) as a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). TRF, a Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) front and proxy, claimed responsibility for the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack which killed 26 civilians. This was the deadliest attack on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks conducted by LeT. TRF has also claimed responsibility for several attacks against Indian security forces, including most recently in 2024. These actions taken by the Department of State demonstrates the Trump Administration's commitment to protecting our national security interests, countering terrorism, and enforcing President Trump's call for justice for the Pahalgam attack. TRF and other associated aliases have been added to LeT's designation as a FTO and SDGT pursuant to section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, respectively. The Department of State has also reviewed and maintained the FTO designation of LeT. Amendments to FTO designations go into effect upon publication in the Federal Register." The Resistance Front, also known as Kashmir Resistance, initially took responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack before denying it days later, Reuters reported. Twenty-six people were killed in the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. India's National Investigation Agency has identified TRF head Sheikh Sajjad Gul as the mastermind of the attack, news agency PTI reported. TRF is said to be an offshoot of Pakistan based-Lashkar-e-Taiba. Rubio called TRF, which emerged in 2019, a "front and proxy" for Lashkar-e-Taiba. Lashkar-e-Taiba, listed as a "foreign terrorist organization" by the United States, is an Islamist group accused of plotting attacks in India and in the West, including the three-day deadly assault on Mumbai in November 2008.

Kunal Kamra's New ' Hum Honge Kamiyab ' Jibe Over Maharashtra Assembly Brawl

New Delhi: Comedian Kunal Kamra has once again invoked his infamous satirical ' hum honge kamiyab ' (we shall overcome) song that triggered a controversy in March - this time mocking the violent clash in the Maharashtra Assembly between the supporters of BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar and NCP (Sharad Pawar group) MLA Jitendra Awhad. The video featured a clip of the brawl with the satirical ' hum honge kamiyab ' song playing in the background. Kamra also slipped in shots of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputy Eknath Shinde - in an apparent dig at the ruling Mahayuti alliance. Mr Kamra captioned the video as "lawbreakers". View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kunal Kamra (@kuna_kamra) Videos of the two groups, BJP and NCP(SP), pummeling each other and having to be dragged back by security personnel have been doing the rounds on social media. The fight began with a verbal spat outside the assembly building on Thursday over Mr Awhad's days-old 'mangasultra thief' remark. While the NCP(SP) leader had not named anyone, the jibe was widely seen as directed at BJP's Gopichand Padalkar. During the fight yesterday, both MLAs and their supporters exchanged expletives. Shortly after the incident, Mr Awhad said he received abusive and threatening messages. "Yesterday, Padalkar's supporters verbally abused me at the gate of the Legislative Assembly. I request the former Assembly Speaker to now grant parliamentary recognition to this verbal abuse. And today, I received a death threat on my mobile. I was abused with references to my mother and sister. All this happened while I was in the Assembly. I want to see if the state police administration will take action now or not," he wrote on X. Mr Padalkar, who later met Speaker Rahul Narwekar and senior party leaders, said that the incident was "unfortunate" and has apologised. However, the issue snowballed with Mr Awhad's party colleague Rohit Pawar raising the issue in the assembly, demanding action. The assembly speaker sought a report on the incident and promised a thorough investigation and subsequent action. Kunal Kamra's Eknath Shinde parody row A huge row erupted earlier this year after Kunal Kamra used the parody of the song 'hum honge kamiyab' during his stand-up special 'Naya Bharat' in March - changing the words to 'hum honge kangaal' (we shall be bankrupt). During his performance, Mr Kamra referred to Eknath Shinde as "gaddar" (traitor) and joked about how the now Deputy Chief Minister rebelled against ex-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in 2022, causing the Sena to split and the government to fall. This drew strong backlash from Shiv Sena leaders, including Shinde loyalists. The leaders even vandalised the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai's Khar area, where the comedian had performed and recorded the show. Many cases were also filed against Mr Kamra which reached the courts. In April, the Bombay High Court had given a measure of relief to the comedian, saying he cannot be arrested. However, the bench of Justice Sarang Kotwal and Justice SM Modak also said the investigation against Mr Kamra will be allowed to continue, pending a detailed hearing of his plea to quash charges. Mr Kamra, however, had stressed his right to freedom of speech. "Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right. As far as I know, it is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the circus that is our political system," he had said.

Himanta Sarma's 'Thenga' Jab After Rahul Gandhi's "Will Go To Jail" Claim

Guwahati: A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would be put in jail over alleged corruption, the latter was seen making a "thenga" -- dismissive hand gesture -- while rebutting Mr Gandhi's claim. The comment came during a late-night press briefing on Thursday, following Mr Gandhi's visit to Chaygaon in Assam a day earlier. Asked about Mr Gandhi's remarks that "Himanta Biswa Sarma will be put in jail by the people of Assam," Mr Sarma replied in Assamese, "Let me tell Rahul Gandhi one thing clearly: I am an Assamese, born in Assam. I didn't grow up drinking milk from a feeding bottle; I was fed my mother's milk. So, I'm showing Rahul Gandhi the 'burha anguli' (thumb). Even Congress members are upset with what he said here. They called me and said, 'Dada (elder brother), did he come here to say all this?' Therefore, I'm showing him a 'burha anguli'!" The Chief Minister connected Mr Gandhi's speech to a violent clash that erupted on Thursday morning during an eviction drive at the Paikan Reserve Forest in Goalpara district. According to Mr Sarma, Mr Gandhi's rhetoric during his Assam visit emboldened alleged encroachers, leading them to resist efforts to clear forest land. "Rahul Gandhi came here and encouraged encroachers to occupy government land," Mr Sarma said. "He said they would be rehabilitated in the same location and given houses. These statements motivated people to act illegally." In the incident at Paikan, 21 police and forest personnel sustained injuries after being attacked with stones and sticks. One person was killed when the police opened fire to control the situation. Two others were injured and hospitalised. "Forest guards and police were attacked when they went to cordon off an area within the Paikan Reserve Forest. Stones were hurled, and security personnel were injured. The eviction was scheduled and legal," Goalpara District Commissioner Prodip Timung said. A police case has been filed in connection with the violence. Mr Sarma added that authorities would review the speeches made by Mr Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge during their Assam visit to determine if there was a link between their rhetoric and the violence. "If evidence is found, action will be taken against both Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge," Mr Sarma said, adding, "Many jails are waiting for the Gandhis. Today, the Enforcement Directorate has seized several properties linked to Robert Vadra." During his visit, Mr Gandhi alleged that the BJP government in Assam and across India was dispossessing people of their land to benefit industrialists. Speaking at a party workers' meeting in Chaygaon, about 40 km from Guwahati, he said, "Land is being taken away not just in Assam but across the country. It is being handed over to a few industrialists." Mr Sarma dismissed the accusation, stating that Mr Gandhi's speech was reckless and misleading. "Such comments are dangerous. They can cause unrest. That is exactly what happened the next day," he said. The confrontation has occurred against the backdrop of ongoing eviction efforts by the Assam government, which has intensified operations in forest reserves and other encroached areas. Mr Sarma has consistently framed these evictions as necessary for environmental conservation and land protection. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have criticised the methods and timing of these operations, accusing the BJP government of targeting marginalised communities and using state machinery for political gain.
