Jonathan Anderson becomes Dior's overall artistic director
PARIS - Jonathan Anderson will become the first designer to head both the women's and men's lines at Dior, the French fashion house's parent company said.
The Northern Irish designer was named as head of the women's line, LVMH said in a post on social media, following last week's departure of Italian peer Maria Grazia Chiuri.
Anderson had already been named as artistic director of Dior's men's collection in April, and will now become the first person to run both collections at the iconic French brand, the second-biggest in LVMH's fashion stable.
Anderson, 40, quit Loewe in March month after more than a decade in which he turned around the fortunes of the heritage Spanish brand.
An influential tastemaker with many A-list fans, Anderson made the previously rather sleepy label, best known for its handbags, hot.
Fashion mogul Bernard Arnault, whose LVMH conglomerate owns both Dior and Loewe, broke the news at a shareholders meeting in Paris.
There had been much speculation that Anderson, renowned for his creative flights of fancy, might take over both Dior's men's and women's collections, which some observers had seen as needing fresh impetus.

The municipality has a R70 billion budget, which is made up of an operating budget of R63bn and a capital budget of R7bn. Xaba also spoke of the water and sanitation turnaround strategy, which has been adopted by the council and approved by the National Treasury. He said the electricity unit is also undergoing the same process, and will be followed by the Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit (CSW). 'The ultimate goal of these reforms is to have self-contained utilities that are able to render these basic services in the most effective and efficient manner,' Xaba said. Xaba, who had outlined multimillion-rand investments in the city, called for a collective effort from all stakeholders for the city to reach its targets. Addressing the guests and municipal management, and looking towards city manager Musa Mbhele, Xaba said: 'The city will not be able to achieve all of these things under the administration you lead, city manager (Musa Mbhele), there are upheavals.' Looking towards Mbhele, Xaba added: 'We need your team to cooperate with you to deliver on these achievements, and for me as the political head, it is to ensure that there is political stability in the city.' Xaba went on to say that politics and business are two sides of the same coin. He then used the French expression "tête-à-tête" which means "head to head", but in English, it refers to a private conversation between two people. During the previous budget consultations, businesses raised concerns about the unaffordability of tariffs as they exceed inflation, which negatively impacts the cost of doing business in the city and service delivery. Xaba said the consultative process was not just a box-ticking exercise, but a genuine effort to deliver a budget for all eThekwini residents. The tariff increases for the 2025/2026 financial year are as follows: Domestic water tariff: +13%, Water tariff for business: +14%. The average property rates: +5.9%. Domestic and business refuse removal: +9% Electricity: +12.72% Bishop Vusi Dube, of eThekwini Community Church (ECC), said the interfaith structures can play a role in the city with moral regeneration, which also seeks to address drug abuse and homelessness. Other speakers were concerned about community health centres, crime, undocumented people in the inner city, and water issues. Xaba acknowledged that a great deal must be done to revive the city centre and briefed guests about the implementation of the inner city regeneration programme. 'Through this bold initiative, we want to improve public safety, address the challenge of homelessness – eradicating bad buildings, upgrading public realms, patching potholes, and ensuring that streetlights are on.'

Trump says 'extremely hard' to do deal with Xi as steel tariffs double
USA - US President Donald Trump said Wednesday it was "extremely hard" to reach a deal with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, as he ramped up his global trade war by doubling tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. The comments and higher levies came as OECD ministers gathered to discuss the outlook for the world economy in light of the US hardball approach to trade that has rattled world markets. Trump's sweeping tariffs on allies and adversaries have strained ties with trading partners and sparked a flurry of negotiations to avoid the duties. The White House has suggested the president will speak to Xi this week, raising hopes they can soothe tensions and speed up a trade deal between the world's two biggest economies. However, in the early hours of Wednesday, Trump appeared to dampen hopes for a quick deal. "I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!" he posted on his Truth Social platform. China was the main target of Trump's April 2 tariff blitz, hit with levies of 145 percent on its goods and triggering tit-for-tat tariffs of 125 percent on US goods. Both sides agreed to temporarily de-escalate in May, after the US president delayed most sweeping measures on other countries until July 9. His latest remarks came hours after his tolls on aluminium and steel were doubled from 25 percent to 50 percent, raising temperatures with various partners. The Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a 38-nation grouping of mostly developed countries, cut its global growth forecast on the back of Trump's levies, as ministers of the group held a meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. Trade, consumption and investment have been affected by the tariffs, OECD chief economist Alvaro Pereira earlier told AFP and warned that the US economy will suffer the most. - Appeals process - While some of Trump's most sweeping levies face legal challenges, they have been allowed to remain in place for now as an appeals process takes place. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic are set to hold talks on the sidelines of the gathering, with the bloc seeking to stave off higher levies ahead of the July 9 deadline. With the latest US tolls on steel and aluminium kicking in, the European Union said it "strongly regrets" the decision to double the levies, cautioning that it "undermines ongoing efforts to reach a negotiated solution" with the United States and warning it was ready to retaliate. French trade minister Laurent Saint-Martin added: "We have to keep our cool and always show that the introduction of these tariffs is in no one's interest." Canada, the largest supplier of the metals to the United States, has called Trump's tariffs "illegal and unjustified". After talks between UK Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and Greer on Tuesday, London said imports from the UK would remain at 25 percent for now. Both sides needed to work out duties and quotas in line with the terms of a recently signed trade pact. "We're pleased that as a result of our agreement with the US, UK steel will not be subject to these additional tariffs," a British government spokesperson said. The Group of Seven advanced economies - Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States - is due to hold separate talks on trade Wednesday. "We need to come up with negotiated solutions as quickly as possible, because time is running out," German economy minister Katherina Reiche said Tuesday, on the sidelines of the OECD. Mexico will request an exemption from the higher tariff, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said, arguing that it was unfair because the United States exports more steel to its southern neighbour than it imports. "It makes no sense to put a tariff on a product in which you have a surplus," Ebrard said. Mexico is highly vulnerable to Trump's trade wars because 80 percent of its exports go to the United States, its main partner. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Tuesday that the Trump administration sent letters to governments pushing for offers by Wednesday as the July 9 deadline approached.
