Russell Martin machine guns Rangers flops in astonishing TV blast ego crew called out for reverting to type
Raging Russell Martin ripped into his Rangers players in an astonishing post match rant after being held by Motherwell on his Premiership dug-out debut.
The irate Ibrox boss promised to weed out the slackers in his dressing room and ditch them as he called out the egos within the squad.
Skipper James Tavernier headed the Light Blues into the lead but Rangers were outplayed by the hosts in the second half - and brutally honest Martin said the Steelmen deserved more than just Emmanuel Longelo's late equaliser.
Martin's astonishing rant was labelled a machine gun by Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton on Sky Sports duty.
The Gers boss refused to use an energy-sapping midweek Champions League trip to Athens as an excuse in a no holds barred Sky Sports post match interview.
Martin fumed: 'They were braver than us, more aggressive than us. I said to the players, I've been really honest with them and I'll be really honest with you guys because it's what the supporters deserve, there's a default here at this football club and it's not one person's fault at all.
'The default is to revert to type which is when it's going really well everyone is all in, it's really good and when it's not going well you protect yourself a little bit and it's self preservation stuff.
'You can't play for this club and enjoy the really good times when it's going well and when it's tough say 'Oh, I'm not really sure'.
'We had too many on the pitch who wanted to do what they wanted to do. So if you are playing with real intensity and courage in your position that we coach you in then no problem but if you want to just jog around and do what you want to do then there's a big problem.
'Some of them have to drop their ego. I will look at us tactically and accept my responsibility in it. But today is not really tactical - it's a mentality problem and we got more than what we deserved, actually.
'We work out who really wants to be all in here and who doesn't. Lyall Cameron came on and did great because he wants to run really hard for the team.
'I said to some of the guys in there that Cyriel Dessers is the only one we've had a bid for and interest in and he comes on and runs so hard, and the same on Wednesday.
'Some of them need to have a look at him and set that example. There will be people left behind if they don't want to come because they need to really understand what playing for this football club takes and means - and not just when it's having a nice time.
'The European game speaks for itself. They find a way to get up for it. Hopefully it's down to a bit of information as well and today the lethargy and all that stuff is not acceptable. I'm surprised by it but more angry than surprised.
'I know what we're coming into and understand the fans' frustration. We are only one game in and we're a work in progress but we have to work out quickly who really wants to listen and who will really fight and run when the going gets tough but Europe isn't an excuse.
'We're going to have games after European games. We need some help, that's for sure, but also maximise what we have in the building. We haven't had a huge amount of games, some of them had their rest 90 minutes on Wednesday.'

Liverpool decide next transfer after Darwin Nunez exit as Bradley Barcola truth emerges
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola as they prepare to sell Darwin Nunez to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in a deal which could surpass the £50million mark Liverpool have agreed a deal to sell Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal - and will now focus on landing a replacement. The Reds have Newcastle striker Alexander Isak as their top target but won't panic buy an alternative if they fail to get their man. They will only switch targets if they believe another one who fits their criteria can be bought in this window. Nunez, 26, is flying out to Germany on Thursday to complete his medical with the Saudi club, who are currently in Europe for pre-season preparations. Al-Hilal will pay £46m up front with bonuses which will take the fee beyond £50m. Liverpool paid Benfica £65m up front rising to £85m in 2022. The Reds have already brought in Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer in a deal worth up to £79m. But they've now sold Nunez along with Luis Diaz while Diogo Jota tragically died in a car accident leaving them considering further enhancements in attack. That is why they are pursuing Isak. They are only in the market for a starting forward and not a back-up. But they will only pay what they believe is a fair market value and chase someone they believe they can land before the window closes. Liverpool have shown in the past that they won't pivot to other targets if they don't get their No.1 unless they believe they also meet their criteria. That is the feeling here and they don't believe they need to land a striker but there is a want to. An example of that would be not signing another centre-back when they had to delay a move for Virgil van Dijk in the summer of 2017 or last year when Martin Zubimendi turned them down to stay at Real Sociedad. PSG forward Bradley Barcola, 22, has been linked with the club in recent days as an Isak alternative with the thought given that Ekitike would play central. But, while the forward is liked by Liverpool and a number of clubs, there is no planned move for him at this stage. PSG are unlikely to consider allowing him to leave, thus making him unattainable. While Liverpool also feel a left-sided attacker of Barcola's age would block the path of talented teenager Rio Ngumoha. Nunez departs the club having spent three years at Anfield and was a signing pushed for by Jurgen Klopp after the Uruguayan impressed in Champions League games against the Reds. But he failed to show enough clinical finishing to be a regular starter for the Reds. Nunez wanted to leave in January when there was interest from Saudi side Al-Nassr and others. Liverpool stood firm and wanted him to stay as they chased Premier League and Champions League glory. Napoli failed with a bid earlier in the window as Nunez again asked to leave but now Al-Hilal have reached terms with Liverpool and the player will earn £400,000-a-week in Saudi. Liverpool failed with a £110m bid for Isak last week and are waiting for encouragement before a second offer, which is likely to break the British transfer record. Newcastle are not entertaining bids until they find a replacement for Isak but look set to miss out on their latest target as RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko is negotiating terms with Manchester United. Isak, 25, is now recovering from a thigh injury and training away from the Newcastle first-team squad after Eddie Howe was angered by the player's actions when he went to train at former club Real Sociedad while the Magpies were in the Far East on tour. Newcastle identify No.1 Benjamin Sesko transfer alternative after Man Utd humiliation
Benjamin Sesko has snubbed Newcastle in favour of Manchester United, serving as the latest blow in what's becoming a nightmare summer transfer window at St James' Park Newcastle are seriously considering a move for Chelsea star Nicolas Jackson after being snubbed by Benjamin Sesko. The Magpies are scouring the market for a new striker, prompted by Alexander Isak's bombshell decision to push for a move away. Sesko, 22, quickly emerged as Newcastle's top target and after having an opening bid rejected over the weekend, RB Leipzig accepted their second proposal of £78million earlier this week. But they aren't able to get him on Tyneside after the Slovenian informed all parties that he prefers to join Manchester United. Although the Red Devils still need to agree a deal with Leipzig, Newcastle have no time to waste with little more than three weeks left of the summer transfer window. Liverpool are also preparing a follow-up bid for Isak after their British-record offer worth £120million was rejected last week. The Magpies are used to being forced to put a line through names on their shortlist, having endured a summer of rejection. Despite boasting Champions League football, Eddie Howe has missed out on top targets including goalkeeper James Trafford, who joined Manchester City; forward Bryan Mbeumo, who went to the other side of Manchester; and striker Joao Pedro, who Chelsea signed. It's the latter of those transfers which has opened the door for Jackson's departure. Chelsea's decision to spend £60m on Pedro and £30m on Liam Delap - who was also linked with Newcastle - has pushed the 24-year-old down the pecking order. According to the Telegraph, Jackson is a serious target for the Toon and features highly on Howe's shortlist. The former Bournemouth boss is playing a major role in Newcastle's transfer business this summer following the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell. Having scored 13 goals in the 2024-25 season, Jackson started just once for Chelsea at the Club World Cup, during which he served a two-game ban after he was sent off within four minutes of coming on as a substitute against Flamengo in the group stage. Reports elsewhere claim that Senegal international is valued at a staggering £75m by the Blues, a fee which Newcastle can afford. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was asked about Jackson's situation on Thursday and replied: "Nico is okay. When the window is open, anything can happen. This includes Nico's situation. At the moment, two new strikers have arrived. So we will see." Other names who've been linked with Newcastle include Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins, Brentford's Yoane Wissa and Paris Saint-Germain's Goncalo Ramos. The transfer window slams shut on September 1.

Dibling bigger talent than Kane
Everton remain in negotiations for Southampton winger Tyler Dibling, who is reportedly not taking part in contact training at St Mary's in order to protect himself for any potential move, although the clubs are yet to agree on a current record signing is the £45m they paid for Gylfi Sigurdsson in 2017 and they could exceed this figure to secure Dibling's services. Former Saints boss Russell Martin believes he would be worth every coached James Maddison and Harry Kane in their early careers and he told The Rest is Football podcast, external thatrates Dibling even more highly."When I was there I had to play it down a lot and not make things more difficult for him," Martin said, "but he is the most talented player I've ever worked with."Seeing him on the training pitch, seeing him live, Tyler has every capability to play for England and at the top level for a very long highlighted Dibling's versatility, noting he can play at eight, 10, as a false nine or on the wing for any new club."He's powerful, he's really quick and [uses] both feet. Physically, the stuff I've seen him do at 18 in the Premier League, with people just bouncing him off him and being put on the floor when he dribbles, he has something I've not seen in a British player for some time."
