Explained: How Bitcoin Strategies Will Impact Market Dynamics
Certain public companies, including one founded by President Donald Trump, have been going on a cryptocurrency buying spree, capitalizing on higher token prices and a softening regulatory environment to load up on the attention-grabbing investment.
Sixty-one publicly-listed companies not primarily engaged in digital assets have adopted what are known as bitcoin treasury strategies, in which firms allocate a portion of their cash and reserves toward the world's largest cryptocurrency, according to a report from Standard Chartered.
Here is what you need to know about the trend:
Why Are Companies Doing This?
Many of those companies are seeking to replicate the success of Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, a software company that began accumulating bitcoin in 2020 and now holds more than $63 billion worth. Its stock is up more than 3,000% since 2020 as the price of bitcoin has skyrocketed, hitting fresh all-time highs above $110,000 this year.
Strategy copycats have doubled their holdings in bitcoin in just the last two months to collectively hold just under 100,000 bitcoin, Standard Chartered said. Those firms include Trump Media & Technology Group, which raised $2.5 billion last month to invest in bitcoin.
While investors can readily buy bitcoin directly or through an exchange-traded fund, investors typically cannot get the same kind of leverage a public company might be able to get through the convertible debt markets to buy bitcoin. Companies like Strategy trade at a premium to their bitcoin holdings because investors believe that those firms can utilize their access to credit markets to purchase even more bitcoin.
Strategy and Trump Media & Technology Group did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Which Companies Are Doing This?
Besides Strategy and Trump Media & Technology Group, a joint venture announced in April between SoftBank, stablecoin issuer Tether, and Cantor Fitzgerald - previously helmed by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick - caught investors' attention. The group is launching a $3.6-billion venture called Twenty One with the goal of acquiring bitcoin.
SolarBank, a Toronto-based solar energy company, announced this month it would implement a bitcoin treasury strategy, saying it would expose the company "to a new category of tech-savvy investors." SolarBank has not disclosed how much bitcoin it plans to buy, only saying that the allocation strategy will be determined by management.
"Traditionally, people invest in utilities as (an) afterthought. It's a very low return. It's a stable return," said SolarBank CEO Richard Lu. "So, how do we bridge the excitement of the new world and a classic industry? We feel that the crypto part of that is a bridge we need to cross."
Upexi, a consumer products company, recently launched a treasury for Solana, another top cryptocurrency.
"It is a great way for a company to really bring attention to itself and grow," said Brian Rudick, the firm's chief strategy officer.
"If a company has a fiduciary duty to do what's best for shareholders, and if you're going to raise funds and invest it in the operating business, or if you can invest in funds and put it into a digital asset treasury that the market is rewarding companies that do so, you should do the latter," Rudick said.
Why Now?
The trend comes as Trump has sought to overhaul U.S. cryptocurrency policy after courting cash from the industry on the campaign trail. He signed an executive order in March to establish a strategic bitcoin reserve and has hosted industry leaders at the White House. Those moves have boosted the price of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
"It may be that some firms are trying to get political attention. This is clearly something President Trump has signaled his interest in," said Chester Spatt, a finance professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
The stark shift in policy under Trump "is a serious tailwind for more and more institutions to get into the space," said Roshan Robert, CEO of crypto exchange OKX. "How institutions are looking at building out treasury applications is just a part of that broader picture."
What Are The Risks?
It is unclear if the various crypto treasury strategies will ultimately be successful, particularly if firms are buying in now as prices flirt with record highs in a sector that is no stranger to volatility.
Charles Schwab, in a report last month, noted that if a company has significant crypto holdings that suddenly collapse in value, the firm could experience a liquidity crisis. Standard Chartered estimated that if bitcoin were to fall back below $90,000 it would put half of companies' bitcoin treasuries underwater.
"As always, there will be some really, really big winners and some really big losers whenever there's a mania like this," said Ravi Doshi, the global co-head of markets at crypto platform FalconX.

American Express plans 'largest investment ever' in platinum credit card
American Express Co. teased updates coming later this year to its travel-focused Platinum credit cards, announcing what it called its 'largest investment ever' in a credit-card refresh. 'We're going to take these cards to a new level, not only in what they offer in travel, dining and lifestyle benefits, but also in how they look and feel,' Howard Grosfield, Amex's group president for US consumer services, said in a statement Monday. Amex raised its Platinum card annual fee to $695 in July 2021, when it also added $200 in annual hotel credits. Since then, the New York-based company has faced intensifying competition for premium credit-card customers, including from JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s Sapphire Reserve card and Capital One Financial Corp.'s Venture X Rewards card. The Amex update will apply to both the US consumer and business Platinum cards, the company said. It didn't provide more specifics on what changes are coming. Card upgrades are critical for new-card acquisition and fees to fuel Amex's revenue growth targets, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Ben Elliott wrote in a note to clients. 'Consumers' appetite for ever-higher annual fees and complex, incentive-driven rewards structures could be tested if demand slows, but the formula has driven growth consistently for decades,' Elliott said. Access to Amex's global lounges is one of the benefits linked to the Platinum card. A new Centurion lounge will be opening at Tokyo's Haneda Airport in the next year, Amex said in the statement, in addition to already-announced plans for new ones in Salt Lake City and Newark, New Jersey.

In poll-bound Bihar, PM to flag off export of locomotives to Guinea
PM Narendra Modi (File photo) NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off export of the first locomotive from Marhowrah factory in Saran for Guinea in West Africa on Friday, signalling the NDA govts' — both at Centre and state — thrust on accelerating economic activities in poll-bound Bihar. Railway ministry officials said that 150 Make in India Evolution Series (ES43ACmi) locomotives for SimFer's Simandou iron ore project in Guinea worth more than Rs 3,000 crore are being manufactured. Simandou will be Africa's largest mining project. 'In the current financial year, 37 locomotives will be exported, another 82 locomotives will be shipped out in 2026-27 and the remaining 31 locomotives in the third year,' said an official. Though the Marhowrah diesel locomotive factory (DLF) was announced by then railway minister Lalu Prasad, it remained inactive. Spread over 70 acres, the factory was established in 2018 to indigenously manufacture 1,000 state-of-the-art locomotives. The annual production capacity of the factory is over 100 locomotives. The contract to export the locomotives was awarded to Wabtec Locomotive Private Ltd, a joint venture between Indian Railways and US-based Wabtec Corporation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo All these locomotives will have AC cabs. Each locomotive will have a single cab. Two locomotives together can carry the load of 100 wagons with maximum permissible speed. 'For manufacturing of these locomotives, three types of tracks — broad gauge, standard gauge and Cape guage have been laid in Marhowrah premises,' said another railway official. Officials said with the Indian Railway network achieving full electrification, there is a huge scope for exporting diesel locos to countries where there is demand. 'It's an opportunity to increase our export of locos that match the best standard across the globe. For Bihar, it will be a big milestone,' said an official.

World Bank lifts ban on nuclear energy financing
World Bank President Ajay Banga announced that the organisation will return to supporting nuclear energy after staying out of the sector for many years (Image credit: AFP) The World Bank is re-entering the nuclear energy space "for the first time in decades," its President Ajay Banga said Wednesday, as it works towards meeting growing electricity demand in developing countries. Banga said in an email to staff that the bank will work closely with United Nations nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), "strengthening our ability to advise on non-proliferation safeguards" and regulatory frameworks. The decision comes as electricity demand in developing countries is set to more than double by 2035, Banga noted in the memo seen by AFP. To meet this need, annual investment in energy generation, grids and storage will have to increase from $280 billion today to about $630 billion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Undo "We will support efforts to extend the life of existing reactors in countries that already have them, and help support grid upgrades and related infrastructure," Banga said. The Washington-based lender will also work to speed up the "potential of Small Modular Reactors" so these can become a viable choice for more countries eventually. Banga, who took the helm of the development lender in 2023, has pushed for a change in the bank's energy policy -- and his letter comes a day after a board meeting. "The goal is to help countries deliver the energy their people need, while giving them the flexibility to choose the path that best fits their development ambitions," Banga said. Besides focusing on improving grid performance, he added that the institution will continue financing the retirement or repurposing of coal plants, supporting carbon capture for industry and power generation. In April, on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's spring meetings, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the bank could use resources more efficiently by helping emerging countries boost energy access. He said that it should focus on "dependable technologies" rather than seek out "distortionary climate finance targets." This could mean investing in gas and other fossil fuel-based energy production. Bessent at the time also lauded the bank's efforts toward removing restrictions on support for nuclear energy. Beyond the shift in nuclear energy financing, Banga said Wednesday that the bank has yet to reach agreement within its board on whether it should "engage in upstream gas," and under what circumstances it should do so. The United States, which is the World Bank's biggest shareholder, is among countries to have campaigned for the group to rethink its ban on supporting nuclear projects.
