Celtics' Jordan Walsh reveals message from Joe Mazzulla after ejection

USA Today15-07-2025
The Summer League Celtics dropped their first game of the tournament on Monday, July 14, losing to the Miami Heat 96-100. Jordan Walsh's ejection in the second quarter likely played a roll in the defeat. Walsh, 21, was having his best game thus far, before picking up two consecutive technical fouls, the second of which saw him push Pelle Larsson into the stands where Brad Stevens, Mike Zarren and new Celtics owner Bill Chisholm were sitting.
Despite Walsh's poor decision-making, it would appear that Joe Mazzulla was a fan of the fire and fight that Walsh displayed on the court. When speaking to reporters in attendance after the game, Walsh shared a message Mazzulla had sent him via text.
'As soon as I got ejected, I got to the locker room, I checked my phone, He was texting me, 'I loved this out of you,'' Walsh said. 'So take that for what it is, but Joe was hype.'
Mazzulla has developed a reputation for his unique approach to coaching and how he looks to challenge his players both mentally and physically. As such, it should come as no surprise that Walsh's heated moment was something that endeared him to the championship-winning coach.
Nevertheless, Walsh will likely want to avoid such lapses in judgment moving forward. After all, minutes are up for grabs this season, and mistakes like the one against Miami could harm his chances of cementing himself as part of the team's rotation moving forward.

Kelly: Dolphins cornerbacks holding their own, so far

Ever get forced to eat something that looks gross, but the moment it touches your tongue there's a realization that it doesn't taste bad? In fact, you continue to eat it. That's how I'm beginning to feel about the Miami Dolphins' unknown, and certainly scrutinized group of cornerbacks competing to replace Jalen Ramsey and Kendall Fuller, last year's two starters. It has only been OTAs, minicamp, and three days of training camp, but the no-name cornerbacks haven't been bad. In fact, they are holding their own against Miami's high-octane offense. 'I think you have to really fight the urge to predict the future and watch, see what you're working with and knowing exactly what's out there,' Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said when asked at what point will Miami's coaches and scouting department know if they need to add a veteran cornerback. So far, the Dolphins are trying to work with what they have, seeing who blossoms, who develops, proving they are ready to earn, and handle a starting role. The entire group has seemingly been holding their own three days into training camp. In fact, Kader Kohou, who has started 38 NFL games the past three seasons, was the orange jersey player on Friday, which means the coaches selected him as the top performer of Thursday's practice, which featured him deflecting a pass to Tyreek Hill during 11-on-11 session. Speaking of Hill, w have rarely experienced a Dolphins training camp where a healthy Hill isn't running wild on the defense, catching bombs on a regular basis. That's been the norm since the five-time All-Pro receiver arrived in South Florida in 2022. But this camp the eight-time Pro Bowler has gotten off to a quiet start, and it's hard to say it has anything to do with Hill's declining ability, or Tua Tagovailoa's broken trust with the talented, but attention-seeking receiver. Hill's quiet start has more to do with how the Dolphins unheralded batch of no-name players have been performing. 'They are confident in themselves, and the coaches are [confident], the vets are too,' said Kohou, who recorded 45 tackles, two interceptions, recovered one fumble and broke up eight passes last season. 'From what they've shown so far from the day they got here to today, I have no worries that if they have to go into a game that they're going to perform.' Kohou's referring to the other six undrafted cornerbacks — Ethan Bonner, Storm Duck, Isaiah Johnson, Ryan Cooper Jr., and rookies B.J. Adams and Ethan Robinson — and the three veterans (Kendall Sheffield, Cam Smith and Cornell Armstrong), and Jason Marshall Jr., a former Florida Gator the Dolphins selected in the fifth-round Miami's 2025 fifth-round pick. At this point it's anyone's guess which two of cornerbacks will be working alongside Kohou, who has primarily played as a nickel cornerback, but is being trained to work on the boundary. Smith, a 2023 second-round pick, has a ton of athleticism, but his maturity has consistently been questioned. Duck has defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver's respect, which is key to a player getting on the field. Bonner, who is beginning his third season with the Dolphins, is notorious for his speed because he clocks practice miles per hour speed that are on par with Hill and De'Von Achane. Johnson and Adams, an undrafted rookie from the University of Central Florida, possess the best size since both check-in at 6-foot-3. Everyone in the room knows this is an opportunity of a lifetime because a starting spot is there for the taking. 'I'm going to come in and work, do what I have to do, and the cards are going to fall how they fall,' said Sheffield, who started 20 games early in his career with the Atlanta Falcons. 'I've had a lot of injuries, and the best ability is availability.' Fans have been begging for Miami to sign a veteran cornerback since word surfaced that Miami was trading Jalen Ramsey, but this week's signing of Armstong, who hadn't played in the NFL for two seasons, is clear indication that either Miami's confident in what they have, or being patient until the price comes down on some of the free agents. Or maybe they are waiting for teams to trim their roster a month from now so more options are available. 'I'm going to come in and work, do what I have to do, and the cards are going to fall how they fall,' said said Sheffield, who impressed Miami as a veteran trying out for the team during rookie camp. 'I've had a lot of injuries, and the best ability is availability.'

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba suspended after skipping MLS All-Star Game

People in sports Lionel Messi SoccerFacebookTweetLink Follow Major League Soccer announced Friday that Inter Miami stars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba will be suspended for the team's next match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The suspension comes after Messi and Alba skipped the MLS All-Star Game without permission earlier this week in Austin, Texas. 'Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match,' MLS said in a statement. Neither Inter Miami nor the two players responded immediately to request for comment on the suspensions. 'I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player – or anyone – who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi,' MLS commissioner Don Garber wrote in a statement following the league's announcement of the suspensions. 'I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. 'Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision.' Garber concluded by saying that league will work with the MLS players to take a 'hard look' at the policy moving forward. The 38-year-old Messi and 36-year-old Alba have both played a heavy slate of matches this season, competing in MLS play as well as the FIFA Club World Cup and other competitions. Messi also played this summer for his native Argentina in pair of friendlies. An already stout test for Inter this weekend now becomes even more daunting as the team, which sits in the middle of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference, will compete without their centerpiece Messi as they face conference-leading Cincinnati. Messi and Alba will be eligible to return to the pitch on Wednesday when Inter takes on Atlas as the club begins its Leagues Cup campaign. Miami's next MLS match is scheduled for August 10 when the club will take on intrastate rival Orlando City SC.
