Wisconsin women's basketball adds former NC State guard, first transfer of 2025 offseason
Wisconsin women's basketball made its first splash of the 2025 offseason on Saturday.
Following one of the busier March windows in recent program history, the Badgers added former NC State Wolfpack transfer guard Laci Steele. Steele marks the first portal addition under recently-hired head coach Robin Pingeton, who took the reigns following former head coach Marisa Moseley's resignation.
Steele initially entered the portal on March 31 after two seasons with NC State, where she averaged 2.7 points and 9.7 minutes in 55 career games. As a true freshman, Steele appeared in 32 games off the bench and notched 3.4 points in 11.8 minutes played per game. During that time, she also hit 20 three-pointers, shot 80% from the charity stripe and finished with four double-digit scoring games.
The 5-foot-11 guard's production dwindled during her sophomore campaign, a season during which she recorded 1.7 points and 0.9 rebounds in limited minutes.
Steele arrived in Raleigh after being named the Oklahoma AAU Player of the Year, Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year and Oklahoma Max Preps Player of the Year in 2023. Her 21.3-point-per-game output as a senior at Edmund North High School, where she left as the all-time leader in both points and steals, elevated her to the No. 56 overall recruit in the class of 2023.
So, while the collegiate production might not pop off the screen, Steele's ceiling is much higher than advertised. Like many college athletes, she struggled to discover consistent minutes in a crowded backcourt. She is now headed to a program in need of any offensive contributions.
Above all, Steele's acquisition allows Pingeton to exhale slightly. The first move at a new program, no matter how substantial, is notable for any first-year head coach. Steele is a respectable first move, given her background and potential.
Before further transfer movement, Wisconsin now rosters seven players as of April 8. Four of those seven were true freshmen a season ago and saw limited playing time in the rotation. UW will look to add more names, specifically in the frontcourt, to its roster over the coming weeks.

There will be further discussion surrounding what would make Wisconsin football's 2025 season successful. For now, it's worth noting that most major outlets and betting sites are setting a projection at 5.5 wins, with an equal chance to finish in either direction. St. Thomas' Duque, Western's O'Brien are the Broward Flag Football Coaches of the Year
At Western, James O'Brien has seen the Wildcats become a consistent state title contender in flag football for several years. At St. Thomas Aquinas, Derek Duque has been developing the Raiders into a contender as well in recent years. This season both coaches took their respective squads further than any other in Broward County as each advanced to the regional finals in their respective classifications. O'Brien and Duque are the Broward County Flag Football Co-Coaches of the Year. After a rare season in which his team exited the playoffs in the first round, O'Brien guided Western back to the regional final in Class 4A - now the largest classification with the state expanding its alignment to four classes this season. The Wildcats remained one of the state's top teams, picking up wins against several top programs including Aquinas before losing in the regional championship game to Miami Palmetto. Western once again had one of the most prolific offenses in the state led by seniors Maddison Manragh and Teetee Mortimer as well as junior TT McFadden, who combined to score 38 touchdowns and amass over 2,200 yards. While a trip to the state final four has eluded St. Thomas Aquinas, the Raiders have been on the doorstep for the past three seasons. Aquinas advanced to the regional finals in Class 3A with a 16-2 record - one of their best in school history - before losing a close game to Homestead. Duque has the program on the rise, however, and thriving despite graduating senior quarterback Sherice Newton - the Miami Herald's Player of the Year. Sophomore Aimee Colson and junior Emmi Merhi return next season to try to lead the Raiders in another bid for a state championship.

Arnold's Moss named Class 4A Player of the Year
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) — Arnold High School senior right-handed pitcher, Cooper Moss was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 4A Player of the Year. Each summer, the Florida Dairy Farmers honor the top high school baseball talent across the state by naming a Player of the Year in each classification. Those honorees are then entered into consideration for the prestigious Florida Mr. Baseball award. Moss, a University of Florida commit, helped lead the Marlins to their first Final Four appearance in program history. On the mound, he posted a dominant 0.63 ERA with 141 strikeouts.
