Ajman University Conducts 8th Edition of ‘Research Day' to Drive Innovation and Support National Development

UAE, May 2025: Ajman University (AU), one of the region's leading non-profit institutions, hosted the 8th edition of its flagship Research Day , reinforcing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and national development. The annual event, organized by the Deanship of Research and Graduate Studies, brought together faculty members, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and distinguished representatives from government and private sectors to explore how applied research can support the UAE's long-term strategic ambitions.
Held at Ajman Saray Hotel, the event showcased interdisciplinary student research projects addressing real-world challenges in areas such as urban planning, public health, technology, design, and behavioral science. This year's edition served as a dynamic platform for bridging academia with national priorities, inspiring young researchers to contribute solutions to regional and global challenges.
Among the many impactful contributions, students from the College of Engineering and IT explored sustainable freshwater collection systems through condensation technologies. From the College of Architecture, Art, and Design, one project examined how walkable urban design can enhance livability, while another proposed sensory-friendly spaces for children with autism. Marketing and management students analyzed green consumer behavior in the UAE, while projects from the College of Law addressed privacy rights and legal frameworks in digital environments.
Medical students explored health access and clinical practices, while researchers in Pharmacy and Health Sciences examined environmental risk factors and pharmaceutical advancements. The College of Dentistry presented innovations in oral care, while students in Humanities, Social Sciences, and Mass Communication tackled behavioral trends, social perceptions, and media narratives. These projects collectively reflect the breadth and depth of Ajman University's research ecosystem, grounded in relevance, rigor, and national impact.
Dr. Karim Seghir, Chancellor of Ajman University, stated: 'Research is one of the key pillars of our mission and the cornerstone of our vision to nurture a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy. By organising this event, we have reaffirmed our commitment to fostering creative researchers capable of linking theory with practice and producing knowledge with real social impact'
He further stated: 'As a non-profit institution, all our resources are utilised to strengthen the research environment, develop academic infrastructure, and forge impactful scientific partnerships aligned with national development goals. Moreover, we align all our research programs with the objectives of the 'UAE Vision 2071' as well as the national agenda for innovation, future technologies, and sustainability.'
The event also honored outstanding student and faculty contributions, fostering a research culture that links theory with practice and encourages collaboration across disciplines. Through presentations, feedback from experts, and networking with industry professionals, students had the opportunity to refine their research and enhance their readiness to contribute meaningfully to economic and social development.

Egypt–African Union trade rises to $9.8bn in 2024
Trade between Egypt and African Union (AU) countries reached $9.8bn in 2024, up from $9.2bn in 2023, marking a 6.5% year-on-year increase, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). The announcement coincides with the celebration of Africa Day on May 25, marking 60 years since the founding of the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union—a continental body of 55 member states committed to fostering social, political, and economic integration. CAPMAS reported that Egyptian exports to AU countries rose to $7.7bn in 2024, compared to $7.4bn the previous year, reflecting a 4.7% increase. Libya remained Egypt's largest African trading partner, importing $2bn worth of Egyptian goods. It was followed by Morocco with $1bn, Algeria with $996m, Sudan with $866.2m, and Tunisia with $372m. Kenya imported $307m worth of Egyptian products, while Côte d'Ivoire imported $251m, Ghana $239m, Nigeria $151m, and Madagascar $132m. Among the top Egyptian export categories were cement, gypsum, and table salt, valued at $694.4m. Plastics and plastic products followed at $590.5m, alongside milling products at $397m. Electrical machinery and appliances accounted for $357.8m, iron and steel products for $289.4m, and stone and cement-based materials for $279.2m. On the import side, Egypt purchased $2.1bn worth of goods from AU countries in 2024, up from $1.8bn in 2023—an increase of 14.5%. The Democratic Republic of Congo was the leading exporter to Egypt, with a trade value of $661.9m. Sudan came next with $292.4m, followed by Kenya with $260.1m, Nigeria with $165.5m, and South Africa with $154.3m. Other notable contributors included Zambia with $64m, Libya with $56.4m, and Tunisia with $49.9m. Egypt's main imports from African countries included copper and copper products, which led the category at a value of $741.5m. Coffee and tea imports reached $286.6m, followed by fuels and mineral oils at $203.7m. Imports of live animals were valued at $147.6m, while oil seeds and oleaginous fruits totaled $109.4m. Egypt also imported $85.3m worth of cars and tractors, $80.9m in cotton, and $73.6m in iron and steel. Remittance flows also reflected shifting dynamics. Remittances from Egyptians working in AU countries totaled $115.8m in the 2023/2024 financial year, down from $122m in the previous year. Nigeria was the top destination for these remittances, receiving $9.3m, followed closely by Kenya with $9.2m. Morocco received $7.3m, Tanzania $6.7m, Mauritius $6.2m, South Africa $5.8m, and Tunisia $5.1m. Meanwhile, remittances from AU nationals working in Egypt decreased to $23.6m in 2023/2024, compared to $28.8m in the prior year. South Africa accounted for the largest share, with $6m sent home, followed by Nigeria at $2.9m, Morocco at $2.2m, Tunisia at $1.8m, Kenya at $1.2m, the Democratic Republic of Congo at $1.19m, and Zambia at $1.16m. Investment figures between Egypt and the African Union also experienced a downturn. Total investments from AU countries into Egypt reached $831.2m during the 2023/2024 financial year, a significant drop from $1.6bn in 2022/2023. Egyptian investments in AU countries also saw a slight decline, amounting to $499.1m, compared to $504.6m the year before.

Egypt's Foreign Minister stresses peace, security, economic ties at EU-AU Meeting
Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed the importance of peace, security, and economic ties at the European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Ministerial Meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, 21 May. He affirmed Egypt's commitment to bolstering the strategic partnership between the two blocs and held separate bilateral meetings on the sidelines with his Rwandan counterpart and the Secretary-General of COMESA. During the EU-AU Meeting's plenary session on 'Peace, Security, and Governance,' Minister Abdelatty delivered Egypt's statement. He highlighted that the gathering occurred amidst unprecedented regional and international challenges, underscoring that these circumstances necessitate a deeper EU-AU partnership to end conflicts, combat terrorism, address forced migration, and protect maritime security. Abdelatty welcomed the EU's consistent support for African frameworks confronting continental threats. The Minister reiterated Egypt's belief in a comprehensive approach to sustainable peace by strengthening the nation-state and its institutions. He emphasised that building state capacities requires joint efforts to achieve lasting peace and called for supporting AU and African regional economic communities in early warning, conflict prevention, and mediation. In this context, Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's role as the AU Champion for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD). He detailed Egypt's collaboration with the AU Commission on updating PCRD policies, including the launch of the Cairo-based AU Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (AUCPCRD), and urged EU support for the AU Commission in this area. Furthermore, the Foreign Minister underscored the importance of supporting Somalia's pursuit of stability and prosperity. He stressed the critical need to fund the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to achieve its objectives, adding that a successful African-European partnership in Somalia would model future cooperation. On the sidelines, Abdelatty met Olivier Nduhungirehe, Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Minister Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting cooperation in energy, infrastructure, logistics, trade, investment, health, agriculture, and security. He welcomed the finalised land allocation for two logistic zones, one in each country, to enhance Egyptian companies' access to the Rwandan market, and noted progress on the Egypt-Rwanda/Magdi Yacoub Heart Centre. Also on Wednesday, Abdelatty met Chileshe Kapwepwe, Secretary-General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). He praised Kapwepwe's efforts during Egypt's recent COMESA chairmanship for deepening economic integration. Abdelatty highlighted aspirations for cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and infrastructure to facilitate trade. He stressed Egypt's readiness to share expertise in specialised economic zones, the green economy, and solar energy, emphasising COMESA members' role in supporting the Secretariat to maximise economic integration benefits for overcoming regional economic challenges.
