European football: Inter miss chance while racist chants halt La Liga game
Inter missed the chance to go top of Serie A as they fell to a 1-0 loss at Juventus on Sunday with Francisco Conceição scoring the decisive late goal in an action packed match.
The Portuguese winger sparked jubilation in the stadium after 74 minutes following some clever footwork in the box by Randal Kolo Muani before he found Conceição, who fired home.
Inter failed to capitalise on Napoli being held to a 2-2 draw at Lazio on Saturday and are two points off the pace with 54 points from 25 games. Juve are now in fourth spot with 46.
Inter quickly got into their stride with Mehdi Taremi's bicycle kick saved by Michele Di Gregorio before Denzel Dumfries put the ball over the bar. Juve responded with Nicolás Gonzalez forcing Yann Sommer into a fine double save, first to keep out a long-range shot and then to deny Conceiçao from the rebound.
Both sides continued to attack in the second half but it was Conceição who finally broke Inter's resistance to leave the title race finally with 13 rounds of matches to go.
Meanwhile, teenager Assane Diao could very well prove to be Como's savior. The 19-year-old scored again to set his relegation threatened side on their way to a 2-0 win at Fiorentina. It was Diao's fourth goal in his seven matches since joining from Real Betis last month and the win lifted Cesc Fàbregas' team five points above the drop zone.
Como broke the deadlock four minutes before half-time with a rapid counterattack. A Fiorentina free-kick was headed out of the area when Diao gathered the ball deep inside his own half and raced forward to beat the home goalkeeper, David de Gea, one-on-one. Nico Paz got Como's second in the 66th minute with a shot that took a slight deflection to curl in off the top of the left post.
Roma were without injured forward Paulo Dybala but managed to win 1-0 at 10-man Parma. The match changed in the 29th minute when teenage Parma defender Giovanni Leoni fouled Roma's Matías Soulé. The referee initially awarded a penalty to the visitors and showed Leoni a yellow card.
However, the video assistant referee confirmed that contact was outside the area so the penalty was rescinded but Leoni's card was changed to a red as the 18-year-old had prevented a clear scoring opportunity. To make matters worse for Parma, Soulé dinked the resulting free kick over the wall and into the top right corner.
Roma are nine points below the top four, while Parma remain a point from safety.
Empoli stay out of the relegation zone despite losing 3-0 at Udinese for an eighth defeat in their past 10 matches.
Alessandro Nesta returned as coach of bottom club Monza last week – two months after he was fired – and managed to end his team's four-match losing streak with a 0-0 draw at home to Lecce.
Athletic Bilbao's LaLiga game at Espanyol was halted temporarily after visiting striker Inaki Williams reported alleged racist abuse towards teammate Maroan Sannadi in a 1-1 draw.
The incident occurred in the first half when Williams told the referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández that Espanyol fans had hurled racial abuse at Sannadi, whose parents are Moroccan. The game was stopped in the 16th minute when the referee discussed the issue with the two captains and match delegate.

Spanish media reported that the match was halted for three minutes as part of the anti-racism protocol, and announcements were made asking the crowd to stop chanting. The referee warned that he would stop the game if the incident was repeated.
After the game resumed, Espanyol's Roberto Fernández scored in the 62nd minute and Oihan Sancet equalised in the 77th.
Espanyol and Athletic condemned the abuse on Sunday.
Eintracht Frankfurt ended their run of three draws and consolidated third place in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win over relegation threatened Holstein Kiel. Hugo Ekitiké had a penalty saved and a late goal ruled out for offside. But others stepped up to score the goals that showed Eintracht can live without Omar Marmoush.
Kiel could take some solace from Heidenheim's 2-0 loss at home to Mainz in Sunday's late game. Heidenheim stayed on 14 points, ahead of Bochum on goal difference, and just a point above Kiel.
Hoffenheim came from behind to win 3-1 at Werder Bremen in the early game.

Brendan Rodgers is set to land Fulham striker Callum Osmand as well as Norwegian winger Benjamin Nygren to follow up on Kieran Tierney's sensational return to Glasgow's east end and the signing of Ross Doohan. But things aren't slowing down for the Scottish champions with Champions League qualifiers just around the corner. The Scottish Premiership champions could bring in some new faces - as well as move some fringe men out of the door. But who is on the agenda? Record Sport takes a look. Nicolas Kuhn Celtic are reportedly in talks with Como over the sale of Nicolas Kuhn amid escalating interest in the winger. The German star has Newcastle United and RB Leipzig keen on a deal this summer after a campaign that returned an impressive 21 goals and 15 assists - with the 25-year-old turning in notable performances in the Champions League as the Hoops claimed a domestic double. Reports have suggested that the Scottish Premiership champions have placed a £15million price tag on the forward - with claims emerging from Germany placing Leipzig as the frontrunners for a deal. But Como are said to have made their move to derail a switch to the Bundesliga, with Sky Italia that the Serie A side have launched "serious" talks over a deal. Michel-Ange Balikwisha Michel-Ange Balikwisha appears to be moving back up the Parkhead agenda with reports in Belgium suggesting that Royal Antwerp are ready to lower their asking price for the 24-year-old. Voetbal Primeur claim that talks have reached a deadlock over the £5.1m asking price - but they now state that a the deal could go as low as £4.6million with Antwerp in need of a financial boost. CEO Sven Jaecques has admitted they must sell this summer telling HLN: "Marc (Overmars, director of football) and the scouting are working very hard to put together a competitive core. "It is a fact that the departures are needed and has an impact on the group. We have to deal with that. This is an opportunity for other guys to stand up. 'But we are not going to allow an exodus." Herba Guirassy Celtic have also been credited with an interest in Nantes winger Herba Guirassy - but the French side are set to demand big money for the wonderkid. Despite being just 18, the Angers-born player was a regular in Ligue 1 last season. And the Hoops may have to be quick to get a deal over the line - with L'Equipe report that Club Brugge are "considering" an approach. Greg Taylor has yet to decide his future with his Celtic contract rapidly approaching an end. The Celtic left-back is weighing up his options ahead of his current Parkhead deal expiring this month - with Rodgers previously stating he is keen to keep the Scotland cap and see him battle it out with Tierney. But both PAOK and FC Copenhagen are said to be chasing a deal for the soon-to-be free agent. However, amid the waiting game the Greek side are "reconsidering" their interest in the 27-year-old, according to Sportal. Veljko Milosavljevic Red Star Belgrade defender Veljko Milosavljevic is also said to be on the agenda - with Mozzart Sport reporting that the Hoops have followed up on interest earlier this summer. The Serbian side are reportedly holding out for a £9million fee - but Celtic representatives have "offered" £5.1million for the 17-year-old, which has been rejected.

Arsenal urged to sign Liverpool star on free transfer
Arsenal have been urged to keep an eye on Ibrahima Konate's contract situation at Liverpool with a view to potentially signing him on a free transfer. The Reds centre-half has grown in stature over the course of the last few years and is now firmly established as Virgil van Dijk's central defensive partner. Konate's current deal, however, expires next summer and the 26-year-old is said to have been disappointed with the terms offered during negotiations over an extension. Real Madrid are understood to be watching his situation carefully, but Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn insists the Gunners should be in the mix if the France international were to become available. Mikel Arteta's has an abundance of riches when it comes to defenders even before the likely arrival of Valencia's Cristhian Mosquera. Indeed, although Winterburn is a keen admirer of Konate's he struggles to see where the former Red Bull Leipzig defender would fit in at present. The Ibrahima Konate situation at Liverpool will be one to keep an eye on for Arsenal, he's a strong Premier League player,' Winterburn told BetVictor. Having said that, it would be about when he becomes available and where he fits into the team with William Saliba and Gabriel. Modern players are more accepting of rotation, which was not the case in my day, but they will want to see their way into the team if they are to join. Arsenal have got options in that position but we don't know what the future holds, so it's one to keep an eye on. Arsenal fans, meanwhile, are craving a new centre forward with the choice likely to boil down to one of either Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko. The Sweden international has enjoyed two years of almost uninterrupted goalscoring exploits for Sporting Lisbon but is currently locked in a bitter dispute with the Portuguese club 'I just want to say one thing: everything you saw on social media is completely fake. 'I didn't even ask for something from the club. They made me an offer, and I replied to them with something, that is it. 'The rest [speculation] that I want to wait until the end… I want this, all of it is completely fake. And even the big journalists said in November I am very close to signing the deal. 'I was like: 'Ah, they have more information than me!?' It was not true at that moment and that is why I was a little bit mad because it was not true at this moment. 'I knew at one moment people would think I didn't want to sign the contract but I was never close to signing it. We will see what will happen.' Ibrahima Konate addressing speculation over contract talks last month. Should he move to north London, Winterburn has warned the 27-year-old he is likely to find the Premier League a far tougher environment in which to thrive. He said: 'What Arsenal need is a clinical striker and someone who can take chances in tight games. More Trending Man behind viral video of fight at Ibiza hotel pool is a pro-footballer 'Arsenal were not as good going forward last season as the two seasons before that, but they still create a lot of chances and just need the right striker to take them. 'When Arsenal have a fully fit team then creating chances won't be a problem, they need someone to make the difference and hopefully Viktor Gyokeres is that player. 'What I will say is that although it's good to be excited, whatever Gyokeres has done as Sporting will be irrelevant as soon as he joins Arsenal. 'You are going to be judged on what you do in an Arsenal shirt and not what you have done at any other club, he is going to need to prove he can make a difference in the big games to win fans over.' ‘Ruben Amorim text me – it told me everything I need to know about Man Utd boss'
Ruben Amorim was a much-loved figure during his time at Sporting, but there weren't many who cared more for their Portuguese coach more than wing-back Geny Catamo Sporting CP star Geny Catamo explained that Ruben Amorim placed the ultimate confidence in him with just one text message. The 24-year-old signed for the Portuguese giants in 2019 but spent a period in their reserve team before heading out on loan to Vitoria Guimaraes and Maritimo. Having only made one appearance for Sporting before making his first team breakthrough in the 2023/24 campaign, it was a brief message he received from the Manchester United boss as his loan at Vitoria was coming to an end that sparked the beginning of Catamo's dreams coming true. In an interview with programme 'Bar da Liga', the Mozambique international said: "It was my last day at Vitória, where I was on loan. On the way back to Lisbon, my father, some friends, and I stopped in Fátima to pray. "We lit a candle to thank for everything and to pray for my future. We went for lunch, and not even five minutes after sitting down, I received a message on my phone from Ruben Amorim saying he was counting on me. "He told me to take care of myself during the holidays and expected me to return in good condition and eager to work. I whispered this to my friend who immediately replied, 'These are God's things...'" Catamo - who admitted he cried when Amorim left the club - detailed what his coach's belief in him did for his confidence that has since allowed him to play a major role in two league titles. "It was one of those moments when I felt most valued. I felt the confidence he placed in me," he added. "We needed to feel confident, and Ruben conveyed it very positively and encouragingly. I felt I just had to respond by giving my best." Having been converted into a wing-back under Amorim, he's totalled 13 goals and eight assists in 90 games for the club, explaining the pride he has in being able to represent one of Portugal's most storied sporting institutions. "It's a pride to realise that many people have this passion for me, especially Sporting fans. And I say this because I think they also feel what I feel when representing Sporting. I have a huge passion for Sporting. Pride for the club, the fans, the squad, the staff, everything that happens within Sporting. "They are good people who take care of our comfort, transmit good energies, and make us wake up every day wanting to train and play. When I arrive at Sporting, I know there are genuine people waiting for me with whom I'll share my life throughout an entire season." Catamo's impressive performances has seen him receive reported interest from the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Arsenal, but the 24-year-old said he has no interest in thinking about a transfer until he returns from holiday following a second straight title-winning season. "I don't like reading news about transfers, interest, approaches, whatever it may be," he added. "It doesn't matter if it's good or bad news; I don't want anyone telling me anything. I've told my agents, 'Your job is to handle these things. At the end of the holidays, update me on everything.' "I want to focus on work, games, and achieving our goals. My mind isn't even thinking about offers. I'm on holiday in Mozambique, resting with family. If my agents have something to say, they'll have to wait until I'm back in Portugal."
