Exploring Qatar: 6 Must-Visit Gems To Discover
My recent journey to Qatar was quite an 'eye opener'. My last visit was long ago – shortly after the country had been awarded the rights to host the football World Cup. So much has changed, not least its people who seemed far friendlier than I remembered.
My Qatari adventure began upon arrival at Hamad International Airport (HIA), a marvel of modern architecture and efficiency. Voted one of the world's best airports, HIA set the tone for the rest of my trip.

Katara offers a treasure trove of art galleries, showcasing both local and international talent, from contemporary art installations to traditional Islamic calligraphy. The sheer variety of artistic expression is impressive, demonstrating Qatar's claimed commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural scene.
Galeries Lafayette – located at Katara, is a Parisian department store transplanted to the heart of Doba. Its elegant facade and high-class interiors offer a taste of European sophistication against the backdrop of the Arabian Gulf. Habitas Ras Abroug – If you have time to spare and feel like getting out of Doha, I recommend travelling to Our Habitas Ras Abroug, a newly opened luxury resort on the western coast of Qatar, very close to Bahrain's Hawar Islands. Image Credits: Our Habitas
After a long drive on modern highways, you will need to exit and travel along a rough desert road where you will experience impressive desert landscapes and dramatic limestone formations, sculpted by centuries of wind and erosion. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the stark beauty of the desert meeting the Gulf's turquoise waters- a serene scene. From the beach, on a clear day, you will see Bahrain in the distance, as I did (Ras Abroug is closer to Sitra in Bahrain than it is to Doha).
Souq Waqif – a traditional marketplace that has been completely renovated/modernised, but located where it has been at the heart of Qatari life for centuries. The narrow alleyways are lined with stalls selling spices, textiles, perfumes, and handicrafts. From intricately woven carpets to jewellery, the souq offers a glimpse into Qatar's rich cultural heritage. The falcon souq, a particularly fascinating section, showcases the importance of falconry in Qatari culture, a tradition passed down through generations. Image Credits: Souq Waqif
National Museum of Qatar – A must-visit! The museum tells the story of Qatar, from its geological origins to its modern transformation. The exhibits are presented in an engaging and interactive way, often using technology to bring history to life. I was impressed by the immersive displays that recreate historical scenes and showcase Qatari traditions. The museum's unique design, with its curving walls and sloping floors, creates a sense of continuous movement, guiding visitors through the narrative of Qatar's past and present. Qatar is well worth a visit, especially considering how close it is to Bahrain. I was honestly impressed by my short visit. It seems almost as if Qatar has 'grown up' since my last visit. Everything seemed better – the architecture, roads, shopping, services, and the overall atmosphere!

Trump travel ban in effect Blocks citizens from 12 nations
President Donald Trump's sweeping new travel ban came into effect early yesterday immediately after midnight, barring citizens from a dozen nations from entering the United States and reviving a divisive measure from his first term. The move is expected to disrupt refugee pathways and further restrict immigration as the Trump administration expands its crackdown on illegal entries. Many of the nations covered by the restrictions have adversarial relations with the United States, such as Iran and Afghanistan, while others face severe crises, like Haiti and Libya. In announcing his restrictions last week, Trump said the new measure was spurred by a recent 'terrorist attack' on Jews in Colorado. The group had been protesting in solidarity with hostages held in Gaza when they were assaulted by a man the White House said had overstayed his visa. That attack, Trump said, 'underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted' or who overstay their visas. The move bans all travel to the United States by nationals of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, according to the White House. Trump also imposed a partial ban on travelers from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. Some temporary work visas from those countries will be allowed. New countries could be added, Trump warned, 'as threats emerge around the world.' Mehria, a 23-year-old woman from Afghanistan who applied for refugee status, sa d the new rules have trapped her and many other Afghans in uncertainty. 'We gave up thousands of hopes and our entire lives... on a promise from America, but today we are suffering one hell after another,' she told AFP. World Cup, Olympics, diplomats excluded The ban will not apply to athletes competing in the 2026 World Cup, which the United States is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, or in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Trump's order said. Nor will it apply to diplomats from the targeted countries. United Nations rights chief Volker Turk warned that 'the broad and sweeping nature of the new travel ban raises concerns from the perspective of international law.' US Democratic lawmakers and elected officials blasted the ban as draconian and unconstitutional. 'I know the pain that Trump's cruel and xenophobic travel bans inflict because my family has felt it firsthand,' congresswoman Yassamin Ansari, who is Iranian-American, posted Sunday on X. 'We will fight this ban with everything we have.' Rumors of a new travel ban had circulated following the Colorado attack, with Trump's administration vowing to pursue 'terrorists' living in the United States on visas. US officials said suspect Mohamed Sabry Soliman, an Egyptian national according to court documents, was in the country illegally having overstayed a tourist visa, but that he had applied for asylum in September 2022. Trump's new travel ban notably does not include Egypt. His proclamation said Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and wartorn Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen lacked 'competent' central authorities for processing passports and vetting. Iran was included because it is a 'state sponsor of terrorism,' the order said. For the other countries, Trump's order cited an above-average likelihood that people would overstay their visas.

Nearly 2 Million Pilgrims Enter Final Stages of Hajj with Ritual Stoning at Mina
Nearly two million Muslim pilgrims began the final phase of the Hajj pilgrimage on Saturday by performing the symbolic stoning of the devil at Mina. The sacred ritual marks one of the final rites of the pilgrimage before worshippers return to the Grand Mosque in Mecca for the farewell circumambulation, known as Tawaf al-Wada. According to local Saudi media reports monitored by Anadolu Agency, early groups of pilgrims made their way to the Jamarat complex in Mina at dawn, where they participated in the stoning ritual, which symbolizes the rejection of evil. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Saudi Ministry of Interior emphasized the importance of crowd control and safety, urging pilgrims to adhere to designated pathways to and from the Jamarat complex to ensure smooth movement and avoid congestion. The Saudi General Authority for Statistics confirmed that the total number of pilgrims performing Hajj this year — 1446 according to the Islamic calendar — reached 1,673,230. Of those, 1,506,576 arrived from abroad, while 166,654 were domestic pilgrims, including Saudi citizens and residents. This year's turnout mirrors the growing global enthusiasm for the spiritual journey, following last year's figures, where over 1.8 million pilgrims from 200 nations participated in the sacred rites.
