WATCH: Birdie Bliss! Minister's Golf Debut Laughs
Minister McKenzie may be new to the greens, but he's already swinging for laughs.
In a charming and laughter-filled debut, South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, made waves at his very first golf tournament.
From missing swings to making birdies, the minister's first golf tournament is a comedy-filled debut.
'I have the bag, not the skill!'
I just bought a whole golf set 4 my first ever golf tournament. I feel like the kid who had a ball and the best soccer boots growing up but zero skill. We were forced to pass the ball to him because he would take the ball, they better make sure I win cos I will stop the game pic.twitter.com/7iyxDp2Wmu — Gayton McKenzie (@GaytonMcK) May 16, 2025
Minister McKenzie might be new to the greens, but he's already swinging for laughs.
In a hilarious and self-deprecating social media post, the minister declared:
'I just bought a whole golf set for my first-ever golf tournament. I feel like the kid who had a ball and the best soccer boots growing up, but zero skill. We were forced to pass the ball to him because he would take the ball… they better make sure I win, cos I will stop the game!'
Yes, folks, the minister came armed with a brand-new Titleist golf bag (retailing at a cool R7,699.99) and zero golfing experience.
But what he lacked in finesse, he made up for in flair and fun.

Joking that he didn't want to hit the ball too far 'because the traffic cops were in attendance and there's speed traps in the air,' the minister had fellow players, and the internet howling with laughter.
And he wasn't done. After a few less-than-perfect shots, he quipped:
'My first shot ever… worse to good. By the time I'm fine here, Walmer Golf Club will need new grass!'
Talk about turf trouble.

Golf enthusiasts didn't hold back in the replies, offering advice, banter, and a good old golf clap.
One seasoned aficionado advised:
'Best investment! Go for a few lessons. You'll appreciate and enjoy the challenge even more. I remember how I struggled with the 3 wood… Follow @GOLF_com for great tips.'
Another user took a cheeky swing:
'2nd frame, I thought you were going for an eagle. Kanti, you got yourself a chick.'
Even as an amateur, the minister proved he could take the banter as well as he takes a bogey.

But not all hope was lost.

With a little pro guidance on the course, the minister's game began to shape up. By the end of the tournament, he managed to score his first birdie, and the celebration was pure gold.
Captured on video, his joy was undeniable as fellow players congratulated him.
'This feeling is always golden,' tweeted @ThisIsMduh in response to the moment.
From posing with a pricey golf bag to grinning like a kid on Christmas morning, the minister may not be teeing off for the PGA Tour anytime soon, but one thing's for sure:
South Africa's favourite golf rookie is officially hooked.

Kaizer Chiefs target poised to turn down Amakhosi for Russia
Kaizer Chiefs have several striker targets. However, those players have other options on the table as the winter window approaches. According to Soccer-Laduma , Russian side Beltika have stolen a march on Kaizer Chiefs and made a proposal to sign Etiosa Oghodaro. The 23-year-old Nigerian scored five times in the league last term for AmaZulu, on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns. The promising marksman is valued at R28.5 million by transfermarkt. 'It's a team from Russia. Yes, they've been monitoring Ighodaro for some time now, and it's believed they have eventually made up their mind and they want to sign him. They are happy that he is a big striker who can use both his feet to shoot, can dribble and can also score with his head. That's very rare, and that's what they are looking for. That's what they are looking at. Yes, it's a big club. It's called FC Beltika,' said the source. 'There is a big offer there. Actually, it's a huge offer from Russia. It's approximately $400,000 (R7.1 million). That's over R7 million just in salaries. So that means they are really serious about him. That's the offer in salaries only without the signing-on fee,' said the source. Is Oghodaro worth the fuss? Let us know by leaving a comment below or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. R7 million offer made for Kaizer Chiefs striker target!
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly already moving to ensure they put to an end their goal scoring woes for next season. Chiefs struggled to score goals with their forwards failing to get over the five-goal mark in the 2024/25 season. Coach Nasreddine Nabi made it no secret that he wanted to bring in a striker, when he arrived at Chiefs. He didn't get his wish in his first window but was able to add two forwards in January. These being Tashreeq Morris and Glody Lilepo. These experienced stars were brought in to supplement a blunt-looking attack which featured Ranga Chivaviro, Ashley du Preez and a young Wandile Duba. While Morris proved to be a flop, Lilepo ended up being the club's joint top goal scorer with young Duba with five. That, however, just highlighted the need for a senior striker to shoulder that goal scoring burden. There have been a number of players mentioned in that regard, with DRC international Fiston Mayele one. The latest striker linked to Chiefs is Mamelodi Sundowns loanee Etiosa Ighodaro according to Soccer-Laduma . Now according to the latest from same publication, Chiefs could be beaten to Ighodaro by a Russian club! 'It's a team from Russia. Yes, they've been monitoring Ighodaro for some time now and it's believed they have eventually made up their mind and they want to sign him. They are happy that he is a big striker who can use both his feet to shoot, can dribble and can also score with his head. That's very rare and that's what they are looking for. That's what they are looking at. Yes, it's a big club. It's called FC Beltika,' said the source. A second source went on to mention that Beltika could trump Chiefs with a salary offer for Ighodaro! 'There is a big offer there. Actually it's a huge offer from Russia. It's around US $400,000 (approximately R7,1 million). That's over R7 million just in salaries. So that means they are really serious about him. That's the offer in salaries only without the signing on fee,' said the source. Chiefs fans, should the club fight for Ighodaro to sign for them ahead of Beltika? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. Or by emailing info@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. We'll wait and see: Jordaan dribbles parliament on fourth term at Safa
Hluyo painted a grim picture of the finances at Safa, saying the association is in major need of sponsors, especially for its junior teams. These include the South Africa Under-20s who won the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt last month despite having had poor preparation that included travelling by bus to Mozambique for the Cosafa U-20 Championship, the qualifier for the Afcon. Safa received revenue of only R356m as sponsorship, while they had little income from their broadcast deal with the SABC, which is cash-strapped, Hluyo said. However, members of the portfolio committee said it would be difficult for them to recommend that sports minister Gayton McKenzie provide Safa with more money if the association cannot disclose the exact amount they receive from sponsors that include two betting companies, Hollywoodbets and 10bet. 'In terms of our sponsorship contracts we've got confidentiality clauses. We'll be in breach of those contracts if we disclose sponsorship agreements and their value,' Hluyo said. As not all members of the committee were able to ask questions, the meeting was adjourned to a date to be determined. Jordaan welcomed that decision as he insisted Safa has nothing to hide.
