Man high on meth arrested for robbery spree in Alor Gajah

ALOR GAJAH: A man believed to be high on methamphetamine was arrested after allegedly going on a robbery spree involving criminal intimidation, assault, and theft from late Sunday night until early Monday morning.
Alor Gajah district police chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said the first report was lodged at 11.39pm on Sunday, when the suspect was accused of threatening staff at a minimart in Taman Mutiara.
He said the same suspect later assaulted and robbed a motorcyclist at knifepoint around 3.53am near a petrol station in Kelemak, injuring the victim.
"Earlier, at about 3.47am, the suspect had thrown a stone at the station's glass door and brandished a knife at a cashier.
"He then used a machete to rob a convenience store in Alor Gajah town around 4am," he said in a statement.
Following a manhunt under Op Kesan, police arrested the 40-year-old suspect at 11.15am on Monday in Kelemak and seized a weapon believed to have been used in the attacks.
Ashari said the unemployed man, who lives with his family, has a history of mental illness and is believed to have stopped taking his medication for the past week.
"Checks revealed he has 12 prior records, involving six criminal and six drug-related offences. He also tested positive for methamphetamine during a urine test," he said.
The suspect was to be brought to the Alor Gajah magistrate's court yesterday for a remand application.
The case is being investigated under Sections 506, 392, and 394 of the Penal Code.

Five foreigners nabbed for allegedly robbing 'hypnotised' tourists in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested five Middle Eastern nationals in its investigation into the theft of money from several foreign tourists who were allegedly hypnotised (pukau) in the city centre here. Penang acting police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said three men and two women, including a married couple, all aged from 19 to 35, were detained at the Gurney Plaza area under Ops Tourist. "Between July 30 and Aug 1, we received three reports of cash thefts involving tourists from Taiwan, the Netherlands and Syria, aged from 29 to 52, in the Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang areas. "A team from the Timur Laut criminal investigation division as well as the Pulau Tikus and Central police stations conducted an operation and detained the five Middle Eastern suspects," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 3). He added that police also seized multiple foreign currencies, two vehicles, and a packet of ganja. Mohd Alwi said preliminary urine tests revealed that two of the suspects tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). He said the group's modus operandi was to approach foreign tourists for a conversation before asking them to reveal the cash in their possession. "The suspects will then take the money and leave the scene. It is reported that victims only realise their money is gone after the suspects leave," he said. He said all the suspects have been remanded for four days until Aug 6 and the case is being investigated under sections 379 and 380 of the Penal Code and sections 6 and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Alwi said they are committed to ensuring the safety of locals and tourists, and advised the public to be vigilant when dealing with unknown individuals, as well as to safeguard their valuables at all times. He added that anyone with information can contact the Penang criminal investigation department operations room at 04-222 1624 or the nearest police station. – Bernama

Foreigners behind tourist thefts in Penang nabbed

GEORGE TOWN: Police have crippled a foreign crime syndicate believed to be targeting tourists in popular hotspots around the city with the arrest of five Middle Eastern nationals, including two women, during an operation. Dubbed 'Op Tourist', the operation was launched following three separate police reports lodged between July 30 and Aug 1 involving cash thefts from international tourists in Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang. Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the victims — tourists from Taiwan, the Netherlands and Syria, aged between 29 and 52 — had reported being approached by people posing as fellow tourists or friendly locals who engaged them in casual conversation. "During the exchange, the suspects allegedly coaxed the victims into revealing the cash in their possession before discreetly making off with the money. "A joint team conducted the operation at Gurney Plaza. "As a result of the operation yesterday, police arrested three men and two women, aged between 19 and 35, all of whom are Middle Eastern nationals," he said in a statement today. Alwi said police seized multiple foreign currencies, two vehicles, and a packet of ganja. "Preliminary urine tests revealed two of the suspects tested positive for THC," he added. The suspects are currently being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building, Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act for drug consumption. Alwi reiterated Penang police's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of both locals and tourists. "We advise members of the public to remain vigilant when approached by strangers and to safeguard their valuables at all times," he said. Anyone with further information can contact the Penang Criminal Investigation Department Operations Room at 04-222 1624 or the nearest police station.
