Fame lets my opinions get heard on set now: Sunita Rajwar
Sunita Rajwar (BCCL/ Aditya Yadav) Famous as Bittu Ki Mummy in the web series Gullak and now winning hearts with her bold portrayal of Kranti Devi in Panchayat, Sunita Rajwar is finally soaking in the recognition coming her way. In Lucknow recently, the Stree and Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan actress attracted a huge crowd as she got down from her car at the 1090 Chauraha for a photo shoot with us. Fans rushed to take selfies with her prompting her to comment, 'I never thought people would recognise me and stop to meet me. It's only after Gullak and Panchayat that this began. Pehle log mujhe nahi jaante thay!' At the Lucknow Times office, Sunita Rajwar brought her signature warmth. Laughing and cracking jokes, she requested a traditional desi meal – 'Mujhe poori-sabzi khani hai, with jalebi and rabri' – she said with a childlike excitement. Sunita with Neena Gupta in a scene from Panchayat Having acted in films like Bala and Kedarnath among others, Sunita has carved her place in the industry through patience and perseverance and has made her way in the industry with grit and resilience. She confesses she never expected to make it this far in the industry. 'I had no clue I would reach here. I was content with life back as a youngster, do roti mil rahi hai, Nainital mein hoon, natak kar rahi hoon, sab achha lag raha tha. Itne ka kabhi socha nahi tha.' She adds, 'After completing my course at the National School of Drama (NSD), I initially intended to return to Nainital. But then I realised that people from here go to work in television or films and something happened in my personal life back then, that pushed me to move to Mumbai. Otherwise, I don't think I ever would have come here,' she says. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo Sunita is an established actress today. When asked if her recent fame has translated into money, she answers,'There are two ways to look at it. One is what we call 'good money,' and the other is where you've started from. If I compare it to where I began, then what I earn now is definitely good money. There's no comparison.' She's also of the opinion that character actors are paid differently from the leads. 'It's very different for us. Chahe hum chaand pe jaake filmein banayein, tab bhi scenario nahi badlega, that's the mindset, that's the business. I feel fortunate to be in a better place now from when I started out.' Having mostly played roles of a househelp till Gullak and Panchayat happened, Sunita says that typecasting still happens but now atleast people know about her versatility as an actor. 'Filmmaking is also a business. If a certain type of character is popular, they keep casting actors who fit that mould. But now, instead of fighting it, I treat it like a challenge. If I call myself an actor, I should be able to make similar roles look different each time. That's my rozi-roti. So now, I try to find newness even in familiar characters.' However, the actress reflects on how fame has changed other things for her as an actor.'When you become popular and hold a certain market value, your opinions start getting heard on the set. Directors actually listen to me now. When you are new, and at an early age in your career, toh koi sunega nahi, aur aapki himmat nahi hogi suggestion dene ki. As you become more experienced and even if one project of yours does well, you can have a say.' Sunita as Bittu ki mummy, the nosey neighbour in the web series Gullak Speaking of if comedy or negative roles come more naturally to her, she replies, 'Mere andar dono koot-koot ke bhare hain. Main thodi tedhi bhi hoon. Both work for me.' 'Loving the hate Kranti Devi is getting' Talking about the kind of roles she's looking forward to, the Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai actress shares, 'After Gullak, I got to explore comedy. Then Panchayat's Kranti Devi gave me a chance to play a grey character. I'm actually loving the hate people are giving me for Kranti Devi. As an actor, Bittu ki mummy and Kranti Devi are two extremes. Honestly, there's less scope in playing goody-goody roles. Negative and comic characters have much more to offer, I am looking for such characters now.' Although, Sunita shared that her favourite characters from Panchayat are Prahlad Cha, played by Faisal Malik, and then Binod. 'Both had depth and so many layers to explore. Characters like the Vidhayak, Neena ji, and Kranti Devi are there, but Faisal's role stood out for its emotional range and layers,' she adds. Sunita (L) in a still from Santosh 'My role in Santosh was very interesting, sad no one in India could watch it' Sunita also credits her new-found fame to the film Santosh, which premiered at Cannes and was later selected as the UK's official Oscar entry. The film's story revolves around a widow who gets inherits the job of a constable in the police upon her husband's death and is subsequently pulled into the gritty world of crime and corruption. Rajwar played the widow's ( Shahana Goswami ) more experienced associate in the film. The film was blocked from theatrical release in India by the Censor Board for its brutal content, though Sunita calls that unfortunate. 'The Censor Board found the film a little brutal. The complexity also came from the fact that the story involves two countries, and the director is a British Indian filmmaker. Maybe that made things more complicated. It's unfortunate, especially for me, because I played such an interesting character. I took up the role so people could see a different side of me. I mean that's how you get to do different work.' -Team LT

Arun Vijay Interview: Retta Thala is like Billa
After making an intense film like Vanangaan, Arun Vijay picked Retta Thala because he wanted to make a movie that could provide the audience with theatrical joys. However, it didn't end up being any less intense since Retta Thala was fraught with challenges, especially since he had just finished filming Vanangaan. "Bala sir wanted me to stop working out and develop a belly for Vanangaan. During filming, I sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear. This injury restricted me from doing intensive workouts to get fit for Retta Thala. The only way to get into shape without cardio exercises was through dieting. But again, Retta Thala is a high-octane action film, and filming stunts too risked aggravating my injury. And on the performance front, due to the production taking place in complex locations, I had no time to switch my sensibilities from one character to the other. I play Malpe Upendra and Kaali in the film, and in some scenes, I just had 15 minutes to switch my body language. And it got even worse when we were filming scenes where the two characters faced off. Also, I had to sport a real cornrows hairdo with a brace. Your head starts hurting 45 minutes into the look, and the spokes of the braces stick out and irritate the gum. With that, I had to speak lines with a modulation and intonation specific to the character. But yeah, despite all this, these are the things that excite me as an actor."
