Guernsey hotels 'hopeful' as inter-island ferry launches

BBC Newsa day ago

Hoteliers in Guernsey said they were feeling "hopeful" that the new Islands Unlimited ferry service would increase visitor numbers from Jersey, as figures showed passenger movements from the largest Channel Island were down half in 2025 compared to 2024.Chad Murray, CEO at Islands Unlimited, said he was feeling "nervous and excited" ahead of the launch.Islanders were being told to use the service, which would offer multiple daily services between Guernsey and Jersey, or lose it.The service was scheduled to make its maiden voyage from Guernsey at 07:00 BST on Thursday, six days later than scheduled.
Andrew Chantrell, general manager at the Old Government House Hotel, said the service was a "great opportunity"."Hopefully, we'll see a similar number [of visitors from Jersey than has been seen from France] because that link to Jersey is really important to us" he said."It's not just the Jersey market coming to Guernsey, but we also saw in the past the twin centre breaks."Particularly from the European market using that link between the two islands to come over to Guernsey for a few nights, go back to Jersey and fly home from there."
The latest figures from Visit Guernsey showed passenger movements from Jersey were down by half between January and April 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.Charlie Walker, director of the Little Big Hotel Group and Vice President of the Tourism Management Board, said the Jersey market was "huge" for the bailiwick."I do wonder to a degree whether it's been ignored. If you consider in 2024, 67,000 in terms of passenger numbers between Guernsey and Jersey, so far towards the end of April the numbers are showing about 6,000" she said."So we're 50% down already, we've got to see at least 60,000 movements to match 2024, never mind see a growth in those numbers coming through. "We don't want to be sitting here talking about managed decline, we want to see an increase in these tours and numbers increasing going forward."
Flights 'expensive'
While hoteliers in the island claimed the number of people, especially from France, staying overnight had increased, Karel Harris, director of the Sarnia Hotel Group, said the number of people staying overnight from Jersey had 'disappeared'."It's a shame really because we used to have so many more staying visitors from Jersey but over the years the connectivity with the flights has become so expensive, so let's hope we see an increase again."Mr Murray, from Islands Unlimited, said the company was in touch with tourism and hospitality sectors in both islands."I think there is a market for everyone. We want to try and make it accessible and also meet the strategic obligations that the islands want in terms of growing their visitor economy.""There's a great opportunity and we just need to make sure that people are using it, if it is not sustainable then it's obviously not something that will be able to continue in the future."

Bank of Italy: MiCA not enough buffer from stablecoin risk

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... The Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework was a landmark moment for the European digital asset space and was hailed as the most complete regulatory framework globally. However, according to the governor of the Bank of Italy, it's not enough to protect consumers from the risks of stablecoins and 'crypto' volatility. Governor Fabio Panetta downplayed the impact that MiCA has had in the region since it took effect late last year. In his remarks for the bank's annual report, he noted that only a few stablecoin issuers have received the new license, and their circulation is limited. 'In Italy, there has so far been little interest in the issuance of crypto-assets by supervised intermediaries and other operators, while a growing focus on custodial and trading services has been observed,' he stated. Circle, the company behind USDC, the second-largest stablecoin, was among the earliest recipients of the new license. However, its main rival, Tether, has shunned the license, which CEO Paolo Ardoino labeled as 'very dangerous to stablecoins.' Tether's refusal to adhere to MiCA regulations could see USDT delisted by European exchanges, and some already have. Even if MiCA was fully effective in the EU, 'heterogeneity in regulatory approaches at international level remains a source of risk,' Panetta added. Platforms regulated in other jurisdictions, where regulations are not as stringent, would still remain a threat to European investors in the post-MiCA world. 'These risks can be contained through international cooperation – an objective for which Europe could take the lead. But we would be remiss to think that the evolution of crypto-assets can be controlled only through rules and restrictions.' Panetta pushes the digital euro Beyond MiCA, Panetta warned that the increasing integration of digital assets into the legacy financial system could harm confidence in banking. 'The risks that stem from this sector will have to be monitored carefully, especially the reputational risks linked to the provision of crypto-assets by banks…there is a concern that crypto-asset holders might not fully understand their nature and conflate them with traditional banking products, with potentially negative repercussions for confidence in the credit system should losses occur,' he stated. While Europe has embraced digital assets and stablecoins, the region has lagged in developing regional solutions and heavily relies on American firms. This has concerned European leaders, and Panetta echoed these concerns. He believes that if American tech firms push digital asset payments, domestic payment methods could get crowded out, 'negatively affecting monetary sovereignty, personal data protection, and credit intermediation, which so far has always been integrated with and complementary to the provision of payment services.' There is, however, one solution that could compete with all the digital asset alternatives: a digital euro. The governor stressed that the central bank digital currency (CBDC) would match the ongoing tech advances, all while preserving the role of central bank money. Before taking over the Italian central bank, Panetta was a board member at the European Central Bank (ECB), which is behind the development of the digital euro. In his four-year tenure at the ECB, he was a fierce critic of digital assets, which he said are 'riddled with market failures and negative externalities.' Stripe working with banks to integrate stablecoins Elsewhere, global fintech giant Stripe is in discussions with its banking partners on stablecoin integration, co-founder John Collison says. Stripe launched stablecoin accounts for its users in 100 countries a month ago, allowing them to send and receive USD-pegged stablecoins, 'similar to how a traditional fiat bank account works.' 'This is not something that banks are just kind of brushing away or treating as a fad. Banks are very interested in how they should be integrated with stablecoins into their product offerings as well,' he told Bloomberg. Stablecoin adoption has skyrocketed in recent years, and on Monday, their collective market cap surpassed $250 billion for the first time. Last year, over $27.6 trillion was moved in stablecoins, which was more than Visa (NASDAQ: V) and Mastercard (NASDAQ: MA) combined. However, the bulk of the transactions were limited to speculative trading on exchanges. This vast market is attracting mainstream financial firms, and Collison says Stripe also intends to double down on its stablecoin focus. 'A lot of our future payment volume is going to be in stablecoins. This is, for sure, a big part of our business on a go-forward basis.' Sir Sadiq Khan urged to seek higher taxes and parking fees for SUVs

Sir Sadiq Khan has been urged to seek higher taxes and parking fees for SUVs. London Assembly Members agreed a motion calling on the mayor to take action because of fears that the increasing size of cars is damaging road surfaces, causing congestion and putting other road users at greater risk of death and serious injury. The London Assembly called on Sir Sadiq to ask the Treasury to amend vehicle excise duty to include a tax based on vehicle weight. It also wants the mayor to request that councils in the capital consider charging more for parking larger cars, and to call on the Department for Transport to introduce tighter limits on the size and bonnet height of passenger vehicles. The motion was agreed by 14 votes in favour and eight votes against. SUVs have grown in popularity in recent years, with many drivers favouring their higher seating position. They accounted for a third of all new car registrations in the UK last year, compared with just 12% a decade earlier. SUVs are generally taller, wider and heavier than traditional cars, and less fuel-efficient. The increase in the size of cars has been described as carspreading. Labour London Assembly Member Elly Baker, who proposed the motion, said the capital's streets 'weren't designed for larger vehicles like SUVs'. She went on: 'Their greater size, weight, and higher bonnets put vulnerable road users at greater risk, reduce available parking spaces, and cause more wear and tear on our roads. 'It's time we took sensible steps to manage the impact of oversized cars and ensure our streets remain safe and accessible for everyone.' But AA president Edmund King insisted it is 'up to Londoners to choose the type of vehicle that best fulfils their needs'. He added: 'It is not really the role of the London Assembly to dictate what cars individuals should drive. 'Some larger families may well need bigger vehicles with more passenger seats, whereas a driver conducting most trips alone may well choose a city car. 'London's streets were developed around the horse and cart, so of course our infrastructure needs modernising to keep up with change.' A recent study found pedestrians and cyclists are 44% more likely to die if they are hit by an SUV or similar-sized vehicle rather than a traditional car. The analysis produced by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Imperial College London stated that the figure rises to 82% for children. A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: 'The Mayor, Transport for London and borough partners are working to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads, by expanding the cycle network, making road crossings and junctions safer, reducing speed limits on our roads, and making larger vehicles like HGVs and buses safer. 'This year the Mayor will be refreshing his vision zero action plan to restate his commitment to reducing road danger and responding to new and emerging risks on our roads.'
