Ukraine's Zelensky says interceptors downed many Russian drones overnight

An hours-long assault saw Russia fire more than 500 Russian drones and missiles at Ukraine.
KYIV - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on July 4 that interceptor drones had proved effective in downing many Russian drones deployed in an overnight Russian attack on Kyiv and issued a new call for their rapid development and production.
Mr Zelensky noted the hours-long assault, the largest in the 40-month-old war with more than 500 Russian drones and missiles deployed, had been 'difficult, but a significant portion were still shot down'.
'Today also brought important results from our interceptor drones. Dozens of Shaheds (Iranian-designed drones) were shot down specifically by these interceptors,' Mr Zelensky said, in his nightly video address.
'We are scaling this up as much as possible. More production of these interceptor drones, more training and more preparation for our drone operators. This is a clear task.'
Mr Zelensky has long focused on manufacturing and developing drones, an industry that was virtually non-existent when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbour in February 2022.
In recent weeks, he has spoken more specifically of the need to develop drone interceptors to parry increasingly intensive attacks by swarms of Russian drones, deployed along with missiles.
In June, the president noted that Ukrainian companies had already boosted production of the interceptors in response to the increasingly frequent and destructive Russian attacks.
Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat said in June that developing interceptor drones would help Ukraine use its resources more rationally in fending off Russian attacks, rather than relying on missiles and aircraft. REUTERS

REUTERS/Kim Soo-hyeon/File Photo SEOUL - South Korean special prosecutors on Sunday filed a request to detain former President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges related to insurrection from when he declared martial law last year, the prosecutor's office said in a statement. "Detention request is related to allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of justice," the statement from the special counsel of prosecutors investigating the December 3 incident said. Yoon's martial law decree was lifted about six hours after it was announced when lawmakers, who had been forced to scale the walls of the assembly building to make it through a ring of security forces, voted the decree down. Yoon was summoned on Saturday for hours of questioning by the special counsel as part of the probe over the insurrection charges, according to the counsel officials. Yoon's lawyer was not immediately available for comment on Sunday. REUTERS

South Korea seeks US trade deadline extension as tariffs loom

SEOUL – South Korean and US trade officials have discussed extending the July 9 deadline for trade deals in a last-minute bid to avert sweeping tariffs from President Donald Trump. South Korean Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo held talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on July 5 in Washington, where he proposed manufacturing partnerships and called for the elimination or reduction of tariffs on products such as automobiles and steel, Seoul's industry ministry said in a statement on July 6. The meeting came just days before a deadline to reinstate higher US levies that were halted in April . President Donald Trump has said that Washington would send out letters to trading partners setting unilateral tariff rates taking effect on Aug 1. South Korea is a key US ally and major manufacturing hub for cars, semiconductors and batteries. If the 25 per cent across-the-board levies are imposed, that would further undercut an economy already hit by sluggish domestic consumption. The central bank in May slashed its forecast for this year's gross domestic product growth to 0.8 per cent from 1.5 per cent. In a last-minute bid to avoid the tariffs from kicking in, Mr Yeo presented a vision for a 'mutually beneficial' manufacturing cooperation framework to further strengthen the two countries' industrial supply chains, while stressing that any final agreement must include ending or limiting tariffs on automobiles and steel, among other products. 'Both sides agreed that they have been conducting negotiations in good faith for a month since the launch of the new South Korean administration and that it is necessary to further narrow their differences,' the statement said, adding that the officials also discussed extending the deadline for additional talks. It was Mr Yeo's second trip to the US in just about a week and a sign that Seoul is ratcheting up efforts to make up for lost time in trade talks after President Lee Jae Myung won a snap election in June, taking over from the ousted Mr Yoon Suk Yeol. Speaking with reporters before his departure, Mr Wi said he needed to increase his involvement as the negotiations are in a 'critical phase.' He said he will seek to arrange a first summit between Mr Lee and Mr Trump as well as discussing security and other bilateral issues during his trip. BLOOMBERG

KLUANG - The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) will not only benefit Johor Bahru but also other districts like Kluang, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi. He stated that the rapid and ongoing developments indicate that the JS-SEZ will benefit all 10 districts of the state. 'Do not think that the benefits of the JS-SEZ will only be concentrated in the Johor Bahru area. 'All 10 districts in Johor stand to benefit from it because of all the ongoing developments taking place throughout the state, such as transportation infrastructure, housing projects and tourism,' Datuk Onn Hafiz said at a community event in Renggam, Kluang, on July 6. He said the double-track rail system, which is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025 , and the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link , which was expected to begin operating on Jan 1, 2027, are projects that would shorten people's travel time. He also pointed out that the completion of the projects could help elevate towns like Layang-Layang, Renggam, and Kluang into satellite towns to Johor Bahru. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
