Newark flight delays show FAA prioritizing safety: Mayor Ras Baraka

(NewsNation) — The Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary ground stoppage for all flights at Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka told 'Morning in America' on Thursday he believes travelers are safe because airport officials have been quick to ground or delay flights when necessary. 'We should be glad that they're canceling and delaying flights,' he said, while insisting the federal government needs to treat the staffing shortage like the emergency it is. Trump's new travel ban meant to make nations comply: Adviser He said that while delays are frustrating, they reflect a commitment to safety. 'As long as the FAA continues to ground planes, stop planes from flying as frequently as they have been, as long as they reduce that, the airspace, the number of planes in the airspace, I do think it's safe, which is why they're inconveniencing people,' Baraka said. 'If they weren't inconveniencing people, it wouldn't be safe.' Baraka said Newark's new runway is expected to be fully open within weeks, which could help ease flight disruptions. DoorDash delivery on O'Hare tarmac exposes airport security flaw U.S. Department of Transportation officials said Monday that the runway was being used for departures but won't be available for arrivals until testing is completed early next week. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that if all goes well, the runway should be certified by June 10. Newark has been plagued by cancellations and delays this spring after the FAA had technical problems that twice briefly knocked out the radar and communications at a facility in Philadelphia that directs planes in and out of the airport. Trump holds call with China's Xi amid trade tensions

(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke on the phone Thursday amid rising tensions over trade disputes, according to Chinese state media. The conversation came at the 'request' of Trump, media outlet Xinhua said. The White House has not yet confirmed or commented on the talk. Earlier this week, the White House confirmed the pair would soon speak directly. Trump said on social media that it has been difficult to negotiate with Xi. 'I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!' Trump wrote on Wednesday. Trump, Germany's new leader to talk Ukraine aid and trade Both countries have accused the other of violating trade agreements amid tense tariff negotiations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused China of disrupting the supply chains of India and Europe, and Trump accused China of 'totally' violating their 90-day agreement reached in May. The deal slashed Trump's sky-high tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, while Beijing dropped its own from 125% to 10%. On Tuesday, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said his country has 'responsibly and faithfully' upheld its end of the agreement. 'Without any factual basis, the U.S. falsely accuses and smears China, and has taken extreme suppression measures against China such as new chip export controls, blocking EDA sales, and announcing plans to revoke Chinese students' visas,' spokesperson Lin Jian's statement reads in part. (NewsNation) — Germany's new leader is set to meet President Donald Trump on Thursday at the White House, and the visit will likely include talks of Ukrainian aid and trade deals, the German government said. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's inaugural visit will include lunch and a news conference with Trump beginning at 12:45 p.m. EDT. NewsNation will stream the conference from this story when it begins. Russian strike kills 5 in Ukraine, including a 1-year-old, hours after Trump-Putin call Merz and Trump have spoken several times on the phone since Merz took office May 6, but Thursday's visit marks the first in-person meeting between the pair. Merz has been a staunch advocate for continued support for Ukraine and offered to help the country develop its own long-range missiles against Russia. He hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berlin in late May. Merz, the leader of Europe's biggest economy, also has a high stake in Trump's threats to impose a 50% tariff on European Union goods. Trump has paused those tariffs until July 9. Musk calls for killing House's 'big, beautiful bill' Other tariffs, like a 25% tariff on autos and parts, particularly hurt Germany's robust automotive sector. Merz previously said tariffs 'benefit no one and damage everyone,' a potentially sparking point for tension with Trump — whose previous bilateral meetings with Zelenskyy and South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa devolved into showdowns in the Oval Office.
