‘We wanted this': Families of 2 Kolkata men killed in Pahalgam terror attack on Operation Sindoor

Indian Express07-05-2025
Two residents of Kolkata — Bitan Adhikari and Sameer Guha — had been tragically killed in the terrorist attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam.
India on Wednesday hit nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, targeting terrorist infrastructure there. The strike, dubbed Operation Sindoor, came two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack.
After Operation Sindoor, Sharvari Guha, Sameer's wife, told The Indian Express, 'We wanted this air strike. We request the Government that they should not stop now — they should continue until terrorism is completely finished, so that what happened to us does not happen to anyone else. Our loss is irreplaceable. My daughter is still in trauma. This should never ever happen again. We were on a holiday; we could never have imagined that this would happen. We are thankful and happy for what the Government did.'
Subrata Ghosh, brother-in-law of Sameer Guha, told The Indian Express, 'We were expecting that something would happen from the government, and now we are happy that at least some action has been taken. But we will be happier if the government keeps on taking such steps to completely eradicate terrorism.'
Sameer Guha, a 52-year-old Central government employee under the Ministry of Statistics, was killed in the same attack. A resident of Behala, he had been visiting Kashmir with his wife and daughter when the assailants struck.
Bitan Adhikari, 40, had travelled to Kashmir with his wife, Sohini Adhikari, 37, and their three-year-old son, Hridaan Adhikari, for an eight-day trip to the Valley starting April 16. They were scheduled to return to Kolkata on April 24.
Following Operation Sindoor, Sohini Adhikari said, 'I am thankful to the Government. I have lost my husband. I had appealed for justice from the Government of India and they have taken action. But I just pray that no woman ever loses her 'sindoor' in this way. No wife or child should ever see what we had to witness. The Government should take very strict action against such terrorists.'
Bitan's elder brother, Bibhu Adhikari, told The Indian Express, 'The government should take all necessary action to completely wipe out terrorism, and we will welcome such steps as Indians. Many innocent people have lost their lives due to terrorist activity. Such steps should be taken so that nowhere in the country are innocent lives lost. Till now, I do not know if any of the terrorists who were there on that day have been caught or killed — this is probably just the initial step.'

India joins UK list whose citizens can be deported before appeal

LONDON: India is among 15 countries added to a list of eight whose nationals, when convicted of crimes in the UK, will no longer be able to delay their deportation by appealing against the decision to remove them. Under a "deport now, appeal later" initiative, they will be deported and have to take part in any hearing related to any appeal against deportation remotely from India via video link. Terrorists, murderers and those serving life sentences will continue to have to serve their prison sentence in Britain before being considered for deportation. Previously, offenders from the countries in question could remain in the UK for years while they appealed being deported under human rights laws. Indians who are deported are barred from re-entering the UK. Once back in their home country, it is up to India whether they are sent to prison or freed. Until now, UK could deport foreign criminals from eight countries without appeal in the UK - namely Finland, Nigeria, Estonia, Albania, Belize, Mauritius, Tanzania and Kosovo. New countries added to the list are Angola, Australia, Botswana, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Guyana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Latvia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Uganda and Zambia. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood said, "Our message is clear: if you break our laws, we will send you packing. "

Job aspirants from Andhra Pradesh continue to fall victims to Southeast Asia scam centers

1 2 Visakhapatnam: Unemployed youths from Vizag and Vijayawada seeking overseas employment are falling victim to cyber scams in Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. Despite warnings against falling for lucrative jobs offered on travel visas, hundreds of unemployed youth from parts of Andhra Pradesh are being exploited. Police observed that unemployment among youth is one of the major reasons for the increasing overseas job frauds. The overseas job frauds continue to haunt Vizag city and surrounding areas, with new cases surfacing regularly. The police suspect that youngsters from Vizag and Vijayawada are falling prey to fake overseas job offers and getting trapped in cybercrime networks in Southeast Asian countries. Inspector of Cybercrime Police Station, Vizag, K Bhavani Prasad, stated some gangs have been luring unemployed youth in parts of the state under the guise of data entry and hospitality jobs abroad. The victims are being forced into cyber frauds after their arrival in foreign countries. Interestingly, some youngsters from Andhra Pradesh who had gone to Cambodia and Laos worked for Chinese cybercriminals and duped Indians (particularly people in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana). These individuals, now turned agents, have been deceiving unemployed youth in the Vizag region into cyber slavery abroad with fake job offers, he added. Explaining the modus operandi, the police said some agents from Andhra Pradesh living abroad (Cambodia and Laos), with the support of their friends in parts of Vizag and Vijayawada, promise jobs (data entry operators and others) in Thailand and other places, offering decent salary, food, and accommodation. Desperate job aspirants pay amounts ranging from Rs 2 to 3 lakh to agents for employment abroad. Once the duped youth land in Thailand, they realize they were cheated. Later, they are trafficked to Laos and Cambodia, where they are forced to commit cybercrimes against Indians, even as their Chinese bosses abuse and threaten them, the police added. A few weeks ago, more than ten youngsters from Vizag and other parts of the state stranded in an undisclosed location in Thailand and being forced into cyber slavery managed to send a video message to their families, pleading for help. The police said the victims were recruited through unknown agencies with promises of data entry, receptionist, and hotel jobs in Thailand. Later, they were forced into cybercrime operations and tortured by the cyber gangs if they refused to cooperate. Preliminary investigations into the cyber slavery incidents revealed that some agencies in Vizag, Vijayawada, and a few other cities and towns have been targeting unemployed youth, sending them to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Bangkok, where they are forced to commit cybercrimes. The victims are forced to work for organized cybercrime syndicates. Though the police are unable to provide the exact number of people from Andhra Pradesh still caught in such cybercrime networks abroad, they suspect that hundreds of youth from the state have been working for organized cybercrime syndicates in Southeast Asia. Vizag city police chief Dr. Shanka Brata Bagchi appealed to job aspirants to verify credentials and licenses of agencies before accepting overseas job offers, as cyber crooks have been duping unemployed youth with fake job offers, he added. NIA takes blood, hair samples of Pahalgam terror attack suspects

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken blood and hair samples from Pravaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar , the duo arrested in connection with the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, to conduct DNA analysis and ascertain if they played a larger role than just sheltering the three Pakistani terrorists who shot 26 civilians, people familiar with the matter said. Pahalgam terror suspects were killed by security forces on July 28.(HT Photo) The DNA samples, collected from the Amphalla prison in Jammu, where the two are currently lodged, are likely to be matched with the clothes and weapons recovered from three terrorists , Suleiman Shah, Hamza Afghani alias Afghan and Jibran, added the people, asking not to be identified. Union home minister Amit Shah confirmed in Parliament on July 29 that the terrorists were from Pakistan and belonged to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Arrested on June 22, Parvaiz and Bashir Jothar allegedly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack, on April 21. 'The two men provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists who selectively killed the tourists on the basis of their religious identity,' the anti-terror agency said in a statement in June. 'We are trying to ascertain if they had any larger role in the Pahalgam attack other than just providing them shelter and food. Thus, their blood samples and hair follicles for DNA analysis have been taken to match with clothes, weapons and other articles recovered from Shah, Afghan and Jibran,' said one of the people cited in the first instance, an officer with NIA. 'The samples will also be useful in matching with articles recovered in previous attacks on civilians in Jammu and Kashmir, to see whether these two had any role to play in sheltering or assisting other terrorists or not,' this person added. Also Read | Pahalgam to Rawalpindi via DC: Tale of a conflict NIA has so far questioned 1055 individuals in its Pahalgam probe including tourists, mule owners, pony owners, photographers, employees and shop workers, recording over 3,000 hours of testimony. A second officer familiar with the Pahalgam probe said NIA 'is currently analysing technical data retrieved from the phones and satellite phone recovered from the three terrorists, which will give more clues about the LeT handlers in Pakistan who controlled the attack'. In response to the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. Indian forces bombed nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in pre-dawn strikes --- in which at least 100 terrorists were killed --- and sparked a series of attacks and counter-attacks across the western border, involving fighter jets, missiles, armed drones, and fierce artillery and rocket duels. In one such attack on the night of May 9-10, the Indian Air Force struck targets at 13 Pakistani airbases and military installations. After four days of fighting, military hostilities were stopped on May 10 after the two nations reached an understanding.
