US Pensions Will Ride Stock Rally to Reach 12% Gains, S&P Says

(Bloomberg) -- US public retirement funds will outperform typical investment expectations as they profit from strong stock returns, S&P Global Ratings said in a recent report. Chicago Schools Seeks $1 Billion of Short-Term Debt as Cash Gone A Photographer's Pipe Dream: Capturing New York's Vast Water System A London Apartment Tower With Echoes of Victorian Rail and Ancient Rome Why New York City Has a Fleet of New EVs From a Dead Carmaker Princeton Plans New Budget Cuts as Pressure From Trump Builds Analysts expect pensions to generate returns of 11% to 12% for the fiscal year that ended in June, driven by steep jumps in stock prices. These gains would be in spite of a dip that occurred in April, when the S&P 500 shed more than $5.4 trillion in two trading sessions after investors reacted to President Donald Trump's tariff plans. This year's outperformance adds to the estimated pension returns of 16% to 17% in fiscal 2024. There is usually a one-year delay between the measurement of pensions to reporting, S&P said. Managers typically plan for returns of at least 7% to maintain funded ratios, according to the report. The ratings firms also increased its discount rate guideline to 6.5% from 6% on expectations that the market rally will continue, powered by productivity-enhancing technologies such as artificial intelligence, as well as private equity returns. 'Should US public pension plans continue to exceed expectations, with technological growth persisting as new technologies mature, and the Fed's rates stabilize, we could see market gains and improved funding for these plans,' analysts led by Todd Kanaster wrote. Stock Market Today: Home Depot, Medtronic, Viking Holdings report

Stock Market Today: Home Depot, Medtronic, Viking Holdings report originally appeared on morning. This is TheStreet's Stock Market Today for Aug. 19, 2025. The stock market is open. Here are the latest updates from the market: Opening Trade: Stat Line The stock market has now been open for about 30 minutes. During that time, the Nasdaq (-0.29%) and Russell 2000 (-0.06%) have fallen; the S&P 500 (+0.10%) and Dow (+0.49%) have grown to the upside. The 10-yr is 0.031% lower to 4.308%, while gold and the VIX are up. Check back shortly for the morning movers. Economic Data: Starts surprise, Permits plummet In the last five minutes, we've gotten today's biggest economic prints: housing starts and building permits. Directionally, they couldn't be anymore different. Housing Starts (July): 1,428,000 (+5.2% MoM) [Expected: 1,297,000; -1.8%] Prelim Building Permits (Jul): 1,354,000 (-2.8% MoM) [Exp: 1,386,000; -0.5%] Where housing starts impressed, building permits remained tepid in the face of plummeting building demand. That would suggest that construction will remain robust, at least until current builds are complete. Those permits create concerns about the future pipeline. Later this morning, we'll tackle how that's affecting the price of lumber (and what that says about the broader economy.) Earnings Today: Home Depot, Medtronic, Viking Holdings Today is set to be a quiet day, with just 45 earnings reports slated for today, per data from Nasdaq. Among the largest reports this morning are Home Depot () , Medtronic () , and Viking Holdings VIK. Here's how they stack up against other earnings from this morning (including the prints from their respective reports): Economic Data There are a few pieces of hard data in store for investors this morning, specifically tracking the housing market. In light of yesterday's anemic NAHB report, it'll be interesting to see how this data shakes out. Here's what investors can expect:Prelim Building Permits (July) [Prev: 1,393,000, -0.1% MoM] Housing Starts (July) [Prev: 1,321,000, +4.6% MoM] The Fed's Vice Chair for Supervision, Michelle Bowman, will speak Stock Market Today: Home Depot, Medtronic, Viking Holdings report first appeared on TheStreet on Aug 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by TheStreet on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared.
