At least 11 people dead after stampede outside cricket stadium in India
The incident happened as thousands of cricket fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru city to celebrate the winners of the Indian Premier League, which is the world's most popular T20 cricket tournament.
Karnataka state's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who uses only one name, said the crowd tried to break one of the stadium's gates and enter to take part in celebrations.
Eleven people were killed and 33 others were injured, he said, adding that most of the injured were stable and receiving treatment in hospitals.
'At a time of celebration, this unfortunate event should not have happened. We are saddened by this,' he told reporters.
'No one expected this crowd.'
Local TV news channels showed visuals of police shifting the injured people and those who fell unconscious to ambulances.
DK Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka state, told reporters that 'the crowd was very uncontrollable'.
The event was being held to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first Indian Premier League title win on Tuesday.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India, which organises the IPL, in a statement called the incident 'unfortunate'.
'This is a negative side of popularity. People are crazy for their cricketers. The organisers should have planned it better,' BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident 'heartrending' and said his 'thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones'.

MELBOURNE, June 6 (Reuters) - Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is comfortable with his decision to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the India-Pakistan clashes last month regardless of any repercussions, the 35-year-old said. The IPL was suspended on May 9 in the wake of hostilities between the two. It resumed on May 17 after the nuclear-armed neighbours agreed to a ceasefire. While most IPL foreign recruits returned to complete their franchise commitment, the Delhi Capitals duo of Starc and fellow Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk took no further part in the 10-team league. "I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled," Starc told the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday. "Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision." Starc was in Dharamsala, near the Pakistan border, for Delhi's May 9 match against the Punjab Kings. The contest was abandoned midway through, although league organisers blamed it on a floodlights failure. "Jake and I chose not to (return). So it was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that," Starc said. He opted out of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan earlier this year citing personal reasons and has skipped the IPL more than once to preserve himself for international cricket. The left-arm quick said he withdrew from the remainder of the IPL because of the extraordinary circumstances. "I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like," Starc said. "These are different circumstances ... I had a discussion back home then came to a decision, and whatever comes from that I'm comfortable with that and we move forward."

RCB: Four people arrested in Bengaluru cricket stadium crush
Police in India have arrested at least four people in connection with the fatal crowd crush that took place in the southern city of Bengaluru earlier this Wednesday, 11 people were killed when tens of thousands gathered outside a cricket stadium to celebrate the cricket league Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) historic Indian Premier League (IPL) victory. Those arrested include personnel of RCB and the event management company which organised the senior police officers, including the city's police chief, have been suspended for "negligence and irresponsibility" by the government. A police official told BBC Hindi that more arrests are expected as the investigation to police, the people arrested were responsible for posting about the victory parade - from the state legislature building to the Chinnaswamy Stadium - on RCB's social media handles and website. On Thursday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that a police complaint had been filed and legal action taken against the franchise, the event management company, and the Karnataka State Cricket than 200,000 people reportedly turned up for the parade, although police had anticipated only half that number. The stadium, where the celebrations were held, has a capacity of 32,000 and was overwhelmed long before the team Karnataka High Court has also ordered a status report on the incident.

June 6 (Reuters) - Police in India's tech capital of Bengaluru have arrested four people, including an official of a top cricket franchise, in connection with a stampede during a trophy celebration that killed 11 people and injured 47, media reported. Four people, three from an event management company and one official from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricket team, whose victory in the Indian Premier League this week led to fan frenzy, were arrested early on Friday morning, media said.
