But just one stroke behind, Justin Rose quietly scripted one of the week's most compelling storylines. The 45-year-old pro revealed on Saturday that he arrived at TPC Southwind battling illness.
"I stopped by via Alabama for the weekend to see my coach, Mark Blackburn, and was feeling great," Rose told reporters on Day 3 of the championship. He continued, "Just got here Monday evening and started to feel a bit off. Tuesday, I came out here, didn't do a lot of practice, wasn't feeling great. Tuesday night, not good. Wednesday morning, kind of a fever, missed the pro-am."
Despite the setback, Rose opened the tournament with a 6-under 64, followed by a 66 in Round 2, and a 3-under par, 67 on Saturday to move into solo second.
His third round was a mix of early birdies and bogeys at Hole No. 9, 14 and 17. But the finish was vintage Rose as he chipped a birdie on the 18th to close the gap on Fleetwood.
"In some ways, I don't know if it dampens expectations," Rose expressed on Saturday when asked if things had started to turn around for him. "You just kind of turn up and play the golf course as the game plan is."
Fleetwood, who is looking forward to his first PGA Tour win, praised Rose during the post-round media conference on Saturday, stating, "Justin (Rose) sort of went aggressive with the driver there and made birdie out of the rough, but it's so hard to play golf course out of the rough."
Rose teed off in the final pairing with Fleetwood at 1:40 p.m. ET on Sunday. Asked about the dynamic of playing alongside a close friend, Rose smiled and shared, "I knew it would be nice to play with Tommy (Fleetwood) on Sunday. Tommy (Fleetwood) is probably happy I'm playing with him on Sunday rather than Scottie (Scheffler), too, so he was probably cheering that birdie, I would imagine, just because it's a comfortable environment for the two of us to play."
On the same day, Rose also shared a post of him and Fleetwood, captioning it, "Last week v This week!! Must have been the 🍷@TommyFleetwood1😉."

As for the world No. 1, Scheffler finished the Saturday round lurking just two shots back at 12-under, with one bogey throughout the day. Rose acknowledged the challenge ahead.
"100%, yeah," he shared during the same conference. "I knew Scottie (Scheffler) was 12-under. I was 12-under playing the last."
If Rose wins this Sunday, it would mark his 12th PGA Tour victory and his first since the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
It would also secure his spot in the BMW Championship and potentially lock in automatic qualification for the Ryder Cup, where he currently sits eighth in the European standings.

BMW Championship 2025 tee times: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy together for first 2 rounds
Many of the world's best golfers have descended upon Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, for the 2025 BMW Championship — the second of three legs in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Only 50 players remain, and after this week, only the top 30 in the season-long standings will advance to the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, where the FedEx Cup Champion will be crowned. Of those 50 golfers, 49 of them are teeing it up in Maryland this week. World No. 10 Sepp Straka withdrew to attend to a private family matter, but at No. 5 in the standings, he'll still qualify for the Tour Championship. But the other nine players ranked in the world's top 10 will be at Caves Valley, including the Nos. 1 and 2, who are set to play together Thursday and Friday. Here's a look at the tee times and best pairings for the first two rounds of the 2025 BMW Championship. Scottie Scheffler will play with Rory McIlroy for the first two rounds of the BMW Championship How about this for a marquee pairing? World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, fresh off a T-3 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, will be seeking his fifth win of the season this week. He's comfortably sitting atop the FedEx Cup Standings, having finished inside the top 25 in all 16 events he's played this year. His playing partner for the first two days is none other than World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, whom we haven't seen since the Open Championship at Royal Portrush nearly a month ago. He skipped the FedEx St. Jude in Memphis last week, which had been the plan for quite some time given his favorable position at No. 2 in the standings. McIlroy, who won the BMW Championship in 2012, enters this week hoping to capture his 30th career victory on the PGA Tour. He won the Masters in April to complete the Career Grand Slam. What time do Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy tee off at the BMW Championship? On Thursday, the pairing of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy will tee off at 11:16 a.m. ET for the first round. For Friday's second round, they'll go off at 1:38 p.m. ET. BMW Championship 2025 tee times Here's the full list of tee times for the first and second rounds of the 2025 BMW Championship. J.T. Poston will play alone due to the fact that there are only 49 players in the field after Sepp Straka's withdrawal. Round 1 / Round 2 (All times ET) Justin Rose and JJ Spaun paired together just days removed from thrilling playoff Long time, no see (not). Just a few days removed from a thrilling three-hole playoff to decide the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Justin Rose and J.J. Spaun will play together for the first two rounds of the BMW. Rose got the better of Spaun in Memphis on Sunday, making birdie on the last two extra holes to claim his 12th career PGA Tour victory and vault himself up to No. 4 in the FedEx Cup standings. Despite the loss, it wasn't all bad for Spaun, who took home a cool $2.16 million and moved up to No. 3 on the 2025 PGA Tour money list. He goes into Caves Valley looking for the third win of his career and his second this season after his unexpected and dramatic victory at the U.S. Open at Oakmont in June. This might not be the last time we see these two dueling, either. After all, both men locked up a spot on their respective Ryder Cup teams with their performances in Memphis. A late Ryder Cup audition for Maverick McNealy? Winless this season, McNealy has still managed to quietly put together a really solid season, racking up six top-10s and making the cut in all but four of his 22 starts. That's been good enough to have him sitting at No. 11 in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings entering this week, but he'll need a really strong performance at Caves Valley to make his case. What better way to do so than playing well in front of the captain himself? Keegan Bradley is facing more than just the normal stress of filling out a Ryder Cup roster. He faces the decision of choosing himself. Right now, Bradley — who won the 2025 Travelers Championship in a thrilling finish — is right in front of McNealy at No. 10 in the standings, meaning if he weren't the captain, he'd likely be a no-brainer pick. But he is, and this week will go a long way in determining who the American frontman will roll with at Bethpage in September.
