Wirral home's garden makeover before This City is Ours filming

BBC News11-05-2025
The designer of a garden which features prominently in the BBC drama series This City Is Ours has spoken of the "pleasant shock" of having his work seen by millions of viewers.Mike Walker helped design the spacious grounds, complete with outdoor kitchen, hot tub and sun loungers, outside the home of the Phelans in the show about a fictional Merseyside crime family.More than six million people watched the first episode of the series, which has become a word-of-mouth hit and is due to end on BBC One later.Mr Walker runs Native Landscape Design, which was commissioned in 2022 by the owners of the property in Caldy, Wirral.
Mr Walker said he "had no idea" the garden would become a location in the drama, adding that he only noticed it while watching the series on the BBC iPlayer with his wife."It was bewilderment," he said. "I wasn't expecting it - it was a pleasant shock!"The huge garden first appears in the fourth episode of the series, when the action moves back to Merseyside after a detour to the Phelan family's Mediterranean villa.Mr Walker said he worked with another company, Bespoke Outdoor Spaces, which built the garden over four months."When I first saw the garden, the patio was really narrow and felt quite cramped," he explained.Since the patio did not get much light due to its north-facing aspect, he suggested extending it "to create a space that actually gets some sun".
A huge sofa that has become the focal point of many meetings for the Phelan clan, dubbed the "Scouse Sopranos", was added.Mr Walker said he felt some pride at seeing several characters - who live the high life of champagne and haute couture - sitting on the garden's "wide porcelain steps".The garden has made an impression on many viewers, with Mr Walker saying his firm had seen a "20% increase in enquiries" recently, not just in Wirral but across north-west England and north Wales.Although a possible second series has not been confirmed, some of the show's actors have said they would be very keen. The full series of This City Is Ours is available on BBC iPlayer

Guests and release date revealed for second season of Meghan's lifestyle show

Netflix has released a trailer for season two of the Duchess of Sussex's lifestyle show – a day after the Sussexes announced a watered-down deal with the streaming giant. The teaser, which Meghan also shared on her Instagram, revealed that the next instalment of With Love, Meghan will air in two weeks' time on August 26. Among the celebrity guests joining the former Suits star during the eight episodes will be US model and TV personality Chrissy Teigen and Queer Eye star Tan France, as well as podcaster Jay Shetty and his cookbook author wife Radhi Devlukia. Also appearing will be chefs Samin Nosrat, Clare Smyth, Christina Tosi, Jose Andres and David Chang, and Meghan's close friends, pilates instructor Heather Dorak and make up artist Daniel Martin. The trailer, to the soundtrack of Bobby Day's upbeat Rockin' Robin, showed Meghan cooking, baking and crafting with her celebrity friends and saying: 'I love the idea of just spending time together … and finding new ways to show people you care.' She adds while being shown wrapping a gift: 'There are easy ways to show up, lovingly.' Meghan also reveals the Duke of Sussex is not a fan of lobster. She tells Andres as they prepare a dish together: 'Do you know who doesn't like lobster? My husband,' with the chef replying, prompting laughter from Meghan: 'And you marry (sic) him?' On Monday, Harry and Meghan announced a 'multi-year, first-look deal for film and television projects', in contrast to their reported 100 million dollar (£74 million) contract five years ago. PR and crisis expert Mark Borkowski described it as a 'downgrade', and suggested Netflix was 'pivoting away' from Harry and Meghan. Season one of With Love, Meghan was savaged by critics. One review in The Guardian described it as a 'gormless lifestyle filler' and 'so pointless it might be the Sussexes' last TV show'. The series has a 3.2 rating out of 10 on Netflix said at the time that the second season had already finished filming. The duchess officially launched her lifestyle brand As Ever, in which Netflix is a partner, just hours after season one premiered in March. She has gone on to sell jam, pre-made baking mixes, herbal tea and rose wine – as well as flower sprinkles, which she heavily promoted during the programme and which are also seen being used in the new trailer.

BBC Radio Scotland's Bryan Burnett to return to airwaves after cancer treatment

BBC Radio Scotland presenter Bryan Burnett will return to the airwaves on Thursday after undergoing cancer treatment. The broadcaster announced in June he would step back from his programme Get It On to receive care for appendix cancer. Fellow presenter Grant Stott, who stepped in during his absence, announced his return to listeners on Tuesday night. He said: 'In what must have been a terrible time for Bryan and his family and close friends, I'm just delighted I was able to help by looking after something that is very precious to Bryan; Get It On and his listeners. 'Getting to do the show over this time has shown me just how close the audience is to Bryan and vice versa. 'I know they will be delighted to get their radio teatime pal back.' Burnett said his treatment had been successful and thanked those who had wished him well throughout his recovery. Commenting on his return, he said: 'I am delighted to be returning to work following successful treatment for appendix cancer. 'Over the past few months I have been focused on my recovery and have been supported by an incredible medical team, my family and friends, and the overwhelming kindness of so many BBC Radio Scotland listeners who have reached out with encouragement and well-wishes. 'Their messages, cards and kindness have meant so much. 'My team at the BBC have also been a huge support and I want to thank Grant Stott, who has been sitting in for me and done such a great job looking after the show. 'My return to work will be gradual to ensure I maintain my health and energy. Cancer has given me a renewed perspective on what matters most and I am excited about the road ahead and grateful for the opportunity to return to doing what I'm passionate about.' Hayley Valentine, director BBC Scotland, said: 'Like the Get it On listeners, everyone at BBC Scotland is delighted to be welcoming Bryan back to the studio following what has been a tough couple of months for him. We look forward to seeing and hearing him back where he belongs.' Stott will share Get it On presenting duties with Bryan during his phased return. Burnett's first Get it On show will be Thursday 14 August 14 6pm to 8pm.

Amy Childs delays wedding to next year for 'bigger and better' celebrations after her mother's ill health as she gives a major update

Amy Childs has revealed she is looking for a new wedding date after postponing her upcoming nuptials with fiancé Billy Delbosq due to her mother's ill health. The former TOWIE star, 35, shared a major update on Tuesday as she revealed she is planning an 'even bigger and better' wedding than originally organised next month. Amy's mum Julie, 59, sadly suffered from a heart attack in May, which seems to have pushed back their desired wedding date in September. Despite no longer tying the knot this year, Amy and Billy, who have been together since 2021, said they will get hitched in 2026 and have insisted it will be 'amazing' as they are hoping for a two-day event or week abroad. Speaking about her plans to new!, an optimistic Amy said: 'We'll get a new date set. We'll get the summer out the way and in September we'll get organised. 'The wedding I want needs to be amazing. It will definitely be next year.' Meanwhile, her future husband added: 'We'll delay it for a year and it will be bigger and better. I'd love to do a two-day event in England or a week abroad.' Despite the 'pressure being off' as the couple have loads of time to plan for a wedding next year, Amy was very much sorted for the original date - apart from the main event - her dress. She explained that she did start hunting for the perfect wedding dress for her nuptials, even looking up designers and on boarding a stylist for extra help. The reality star added: 'We got everything sorted. The only thing I didn't sort out was the dress. I was looking at designers – I had a stylist. In the end, my life was turned upside down with my mum and that was really tough.' The mum-of-four said Julie was rushed to hospital despite not having any symptoms before the heart attack, which is what shocked her the most. Sharing an update on her health, she explained that Julie has since had a stent put in and that she is with her every day. Amy - whose youngest kids are eight-month-old twins Billie and Millie - said it was hard to juggle looking after them as well as making sure her mum was fine. The TV personality is also mum to daughter Polly, eight, with builder Bradley Wright, and Ritchie, five, with her ex of the same name. She shared how they were in Tenerife at the time, and Amy flew straight home to be with her mum. Thankfully, she said her mum is now fine and will likely speak about it on upcoming scenes on TOWIE. Julie will be known to fans as she starred in her daughter's 2011 reality show, It's All About Amy. It comes after Amy shared a gushing appreciation post for fiancé Billy, as she admitted the couple had gone through 'a very stressful six months'. Taking to her Instagram, she posted a glowing tribute to her partner for getting through the stressful time together - juggling house renovations, their careers and raising four children. Amy shared a snap of the couple together as Billy wrapped a loving arm around her waist. Captioning the loved-up shot, she gushed: 'Appreciation post for this one ♥️ A very stressful 6 months with the house renovations but we are finally there. 'Passing ships, 4 kids, house renovation, work, if we can get through this we can get through anything babe♥️ I love you babe @billydelbosq8.' Billy was quick to take to the comments to voice his own appreciation for Amy, penning: 'The last 6 months has been an absolute rollercoaster of ups and downs.. Renovations, Family life, work life and everything else in between.. 'But we've come through the other side stronger… Life always throws curve balls but no matter what we have us ❤️ I love you xxx'.
