Heavy rain leaves Ludhiana floundering, tripping on potholes

Ludhiana: Thursday's heavy rainfall plunged Ludhiana into chaos, leaving residents grappling with deep waterlogging and hazardous road conditions. Areas around Buddha Nullah were the worst hit, with the situation spiralling out of control following afternoon showers.
Water level in the drain rose alarmingly, nearly touching bridge undersides, and relief remains elusive until the level subsides.
Several roads across the city have developed deep potholes, making it nearly impossible for commuters to navigate safely. Many lost control of their vehicles and fell into stagnant pools of water. Affected areas include Chander Nagar, Haibowal, Civil Lines, Civil City, Chandigarh Road, Hambran Road, Shivaji Nagar, Dholewal, Samrala Chowk, Sunder Nagar, Gopal Nagar, Transport Nagar, GT Road, and the Lodhi Club underpass.
The narrowing of the Buddha Dariya drain by the Municipal Corporation (MC) has worsened the situation. Black water overflowed from the drain, flooding roads and blocking access to homes with filthy water.
Poonam Sharma, a commuter who fell on Haibowal Road, voiced her frustration: "It's unacceptable that the civic body hasn't repaired the potholes. I was lucky to escape without serious injury, but it could have been much worse with vehicles behind me."

Santosh Kumar, a resident of Chander Nagar, echoed similar concerns. "The drain level isn't dropping, and the reduced width is causing backflow. With more rain forecasted, residents are in for a tough time."
MC officials attributed the flooding to the intensity of the rainfall, stating that while morning showers drained out, the afternoon downpour overwhelmed the system. They assured that efforts are underway to remove blockages and drain the water swiftly.

Pilibhit–Uttarakhand road stretch swept away by floods
PILIBHIT: A 20–25ft stretch of the Majhola–Sitarganj road, connecting Pilibhit with Uttarakhand, was washed away by floodwaters from the Kailash river on Thursday afternoon, cutting off interstate traffic. The breach, near Birhani village in the district, has hit over 500 students from half a dozen villages who travel daily by school buses to English-medium schools in Sitarganj, Uttarakhand. The spot lies barely 200ft from the main channel of the Kailash, which forms part of the UP–Uttarakhand border. Locals said the same stretch was swept away in floods last year as well. After that, the PWD had built a long culvert using Hume pipes, but it failed to withstand the force of the river's discharge this time. SDM Amaria, Mayank Goswami, said PWD assistant engineer Jaipal Lodhi has been directed to conduct a technical survey and start repairs at the earliest to restore traffic. 'A long-term solution will be decided by PWD engineers, but I will suggest the construction of a bridge here,' he said. Residents said the disruption would also affect farmers and traders. 'Many farmers have shops and businesses in Sitarganj, while others go there for banking, fuel, fertiliser and pesticide needs. Now, we will have to travel 30–35km more via Amaria,' said Manjit Singh, a farmer from Bela Pokhra village. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
