Gucci-owner Kering names ex-Renault chief Luca de Meo as CEO

Fashion United13 hours ago

French luxury group Kering announced Monday that it had appointed Luca de Meo, who helped drive automaker Renault out of crisis, its new chief executive as it tries to turn around the fortunes at its struggling flagship brand Gucci.
De Meo's appointment "marks a decisive step in the evolution of Kering's governance and strengthens the Group's leadership as it enters a new phase of its development", the company said in a statement.
It said de Meo would take over the reins on September after shareholders approve the change in the governing structure that will see the chief executive and board chairman roles split at the group that owns Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and other premium brands.
Francois-Henri Pinault, whose family controls the holding that is the largest shareholder in Kering, will remain board chairman.
Kering has struggled to turn things around at Gucci, the Italian fashion house famous for its handbags and which accounts for half of the group's overall sales.
Shares in Kering shot nearly 12 percent higher on reports of de Meo's imminent appointment, which was only confirmed by the company after the closing of the Paris stock exchange.
Renault shares, however, fell 8.7 following its announcement Sunday that Luca de Meo, 58, would step down on July 15 "to take on new challenges outside the automobile sector" after five years at the helm of the company. Turnaround engineer
Known as a skilled communicator and marketing expert, de Meo is credited with bringing stability to a company that was in turmoil when he took over in 2020.
The automaker was reeling from more than a year of crisis in the wake of the scandal involving Carlos Ghosn, the former head of the Nissan-Renault alliance who fled Japan to avoid trial.
De Meo accelerated the group's shift to electric vehicles and pushed for an upmarket move in an effort to steer the company out of trouble. Renault also owns the Dacia and Alpine brands.
The automaker managed to avoid the sales slowdown that has hit its main rivals, and has maintained its guidance for a gross operating margin of more than seven percent this year. 'Kering needs to change'
Monday's jump in Kering's share price still leaves long-term investors deep in the hole.
"Kering shares have lost 28 percent since the beginning of the year and 78 percent since its peak in mid-2021, a drop largely due to the drop in its leading brand Gucci," said analysts at Bernstein bank in a note.
"Kering needs to change as the group's performance continues to deteriorate," they added. The company's sales slid 12 percent last year to 17.2 billion euros and net profit tumbled by 64 percent to 1.1 billion euros.
Shares in Gucci fell by 23 percent in 2024, and in February it parted ways with its creative director, Italian designer Sabato De Sarno, after a collaboration that lasted two years and failed to turn things around at the fashion label known for its handbags with the double G logo.
In March it appointed Demna Gvasalia from its Balenciaga brand as chief designer, and has also appointed new designers at Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta. 'Outsider'
Analysts at RBC Capital Market said that de Meo may be able shake up the Kering's senior management, which consists mostly of insiders.
"We assume Mr de Meo will act as a spearhead for the business, and as an outsider be more willing to make tougher decisions, and to add depth to the leadership team," they said.
They also said "we question whether he has the relevant luxury sector experience despite his strong resume in terms of strategic viewpoint and turnaround credentials."
Analysts at Citi were also sceptical. "De Meo is perceived to have largely contributed to Renault's turnaround.... However, execution of luxury brand turnarounds has become more complex, lengthy, costly, and far less public-market-friendly in the past few years," they noted.

However, according to Corriere dello Sport, Italian giants Juventus want to sign the 27-year-old to make a statement. The report states Sporting are asking for £60million plus £8m in bonuses to sell Gyokeres, although that contradicts previous rumours indicating his release clause actually sat as high as £85m. To finance this, the Serie A club have identified EIGHT names they will look to offload this summer to fund their spending spree. The Bianconeri ranked seventh in the league last season for goals scored, and club chiefs believe Gyokeres can be the solution to their problems. Another high-profile name on the chopping block is former Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, who ultimately became a squad player following his arrival last summer. The club want around £51m for the pair, considered surplus to requirements by coach Igot Tudor, who replaced the sacked Thiago Motta in March after just 10 months in charge. Gyokeres had rejected a move to Man Utd to reunite with Ruben Amorim, according to Portuguese media, which had paved the way for Arsenal to land Mikel Arteta's first pure No.9. Following talks with his agent, Arsenal submitted two bids of £55m and £60m for the striker, but saw both rejected by Sporting. And after growing frustrated at the saga, the Gunners have parked those plans to re-open their enquiries into Aston Villa and England star Ollie Watkins. Arsenal previously bid for Watkins in January, but the late nature of the move in the window and it falling short of Villa's £80m valuation at the time saw the approach slapped down. 4 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW Join SUN CLUB for the Arsenal Files every Friday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from The Emirates Join SUN CLUB for the Man Utd Files every Thursday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from Old Trafford

Renault's CEO search may include insider Le Vot, Stellantis' Picat, analysts say

LONDON, June 17 (Reuters) - Luca de Meo's abrupt departure as Renault CEO has kicked off a search for his successor, with analysts mentioning longtime insider Denis Le Vot and Maxime Picat of rival Stellantis as suitable fits to continue the French automaker's turnaround. Renault ( opens new tab shares fell as much as 8% on Monday, their biggest one-day percentage drop since February 2022, as investors worried about the company's future without de Meo at the helm. Shares in Kering, where he will become CEO, rallied. Picat, who is head of global purchasing and supply chains at Stellantis ( opens new tab, had been in the running for the chief executive officer post at the world's No. 4 automaker. One of two internal candidates, he lost out to Antonio Filosa. Executive vice president Le Vot joined Renault from university and has run its low-cost Dacia brand since May 2022. Analysts at French brokerage Kepler Cheuvreux said both men could be potential successors, whilst JP Morgan analyst Jose Asumendi noted Renault's "strong bench" of brand managers, including at Dacia. "We (...) also would envision potential external candidates from (other companies) such as Stellantis, VW Group, Nissan, amongst other competitors," he said. Le Vot and Picat, who are both French nationals, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Renault declined to comment on its succession plans. Whoever succeeds de Meo will have to hit the ground running. Although he revived Renault and overhauled its strategic alliance with Nissan (7201.T), opens new tab during his five years as CEO, like other traditional automakers it faces rising competition from Chinese rivals. The company must also lean on partnerships because it is smaller than most other mainstream manufacturers. De Meo's departure will add to concerns about Renault's ability to remain independent, said Jefferies analysts, a perennial challenge in an industry built on scale. Renault was the world's No. 15 automaker by sales in 2024, according to data compiled by industry analyst Felipe Munoz, down from 14th spot in 2023. In recent years, it has been overtaken by Chinese automakers BYD ( opens new tab, Geely ( Chery ( and Changan ( opens new tab is likely to surpass it in sales this year. To make up for its small size as the auto industry wrestles with the huge expense of going electric, Renault under de Meo teamed up with a number of partners and investors including Google, Qualcomm (QCOM.O), opens new tab and China's Geely. The partnerships have helped reduce costs, but labour unions claim they threaten the company's in-house know-how. Under Le Vot's leadership, the Dacia brand has performed well thanks to its Sandero and Duster models. In April, the subcompact Sandero was Europe's No. 2 selling car - behind the Renault Clio - and the Duster SUV was No. 7, according to research firm JATO Dynamics. Le Vot had previous management stints in Turkey and Russia, where he was chief operating officer from 2011 to 2013, and ran North American operations at alliance partner Nissan (7201.T), opens new tab, where he oversaw the launch of the new Altima sedan in 2018. Picat has spent his entire career at PSA and then Stellantis, formed when the French group merged with FCA in 2021. He was head of the Peugeot brand from 2012, where he oversaw the launch of two of its bestsellers, the 2008 and 3008 SUVs. A Stellantis source who knows Picat said he didn't know if he was interested in the top job at Renault, but that he would "not be surprised" if he was talking to the French automaker. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to discuss the matter publicly, said it would be normal for an executive to look elsewhere after losing the race to become CEO.

Viktor Gyokeres' monster £11m contract offer sees club put 8 players up for sale

Manchester United and Arsenal are leading the Premier League interest in Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres but they could face serious interest from overseas following an eye-watering contract offer Juventus are aiming to sell EIGHT stars including Dusan Vlahovic and Douglas Luiz to finance their eye-watering deal for Viktor Gyokeres. The Sporting Lisbon striker has been at the centre of a transfer tug of war between Arsenal and Manchester United throughout the majority of the summer. But Italian side Juventus have attempted to muscle in on a deal over recent days. It's been claimed in Italy that the Serie A giants are willing to offer Gyokeres a stunning £11m-per-year deal to snub Premier League interest and move to Turin. ‌ But the club need to bring in some serious funds in order to afford that contract offer, as well as the €80m plus €10m in add ons (£68.1m plus £8.5m) fee that Sporting are demanding for their star forward. According to Corriere dello Sport, Juventus already have eight players in mind to potentially sell this summer. ‌ Right at the top of that list sit Vlahovic and former Aston Villa star Luiz, who could fetch around £50m between them. Lloyd Kelly, who was only signed permanently from Newcastle this summer, could also be sold. Samuel Mbangula, Daniele Rugani, Filip Kostic, Mattia Perin and Arkadiusz Milik are all candidates to bid farewell, with Juventus hopeful of earning around £85m from all of their sales this summer. And while Juve are aiming to invest those funds in a deal for Gyokeres, the Italian side do have alternatives in mind. Former loanee Randal Kolo Muani remains an option, while Jonathan David could also be a bargain signing after leaving Lille at the end of his contract. Italian-based forwards Victor Osimhen and Mateo Retegui have also reportedly been considered, although neither would come cheap. It remains to be seen if Juventus' efforts are enough to convince Gyokeres to move to Italy. But either way, his potential exit from Sporting has turned bitter with previous reports suggesting he was willing to go on strike in order to force a move away from the club. Gyokeres then took to Instagram to give his side of the story. He wrote: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." ‌ Where do you think Gyokeres should go? Share your thoughts in the comments below Meanwhile, Sporting president Federico Varandas has confirmed that his side won't be bullied into selling his star forward. Speaking to Record, he said: "One thing you should already know is me better. Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyökeres will not leave for €60m+10m (£51m+£8.5m) because I never promised him that. This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyökeres, neither today nor last season." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
