Samsung's boss escapes prison, but can he escape the market slump?

Phone Arena17-07-2025
Samsung's long-running legal battle over its chairman has finally come to an end. South Korea's Supreme Court has cleared Jay Y. Lee of all charges related to accounting fraud and stock manipulation, eliminating a cloud that has hovered over Samsung for nearly a decade. The case centered on a controversial $8 billion merger in 2015 between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries. Prosecutors argued that the deal was designed to secure Lee's succession and cement his control over the conglomerate, accusing him and other executives of manipulating stock prices and engaging in fraudulent accounting practices at the expense of minority shareholders. These were not minor charges by any means.Lee, who assumed leadership after his father suffered a heart attack in 2014, consistently rejected the allegations, saying the merger followed normal management practices.
The path to this ruling was long and turbulent. In late 2024, prosecutors demanded a five-year prison sentence for Lee, even after a Seoul court had previously cleared him of wrongdoing earlier that year. His history of legal troubles only added to the controversy, particularly a bribery conviction linked to former President Park Geun-hye, which led to 18 months behind bars before his release in 2021 and subsequent pardon in 2022.
By February 2025, Lee secured an important victory when an appeals court upheld his acquittal on fraud and stock manipulation charges. However, uncertainty persisted as prosecutors retained the right to escalate the case to the Supreme Court. That uncertainty is now gone. The country's highest court has upheld the earlier ruling, permanently closing the chapter on these accusations and giving Samsung breathing room to focus on its business priorities. Industry analysts have emphasized that this decision removes a major obstacle for Samsung's leadership. They believe that eliminating legal uncertainty could encourage more decisive management and allow the company to concentrate on long-term strategies rather than short-term survival. Investors have already reacted positively, boosting Samsung shares as confidence returns to the market.

Despite the legal victory, the road ahead for Lee is far from smooth. Samsung recently reported a worse-than-expected 56% plunge in second-quarter operating profit, with sluggish AI chip sales deepening investor concerns. Corporate analysts note that Lee now faces the dual challenge of reinforcing Samsung's dominance in its core businesses while identifying new engines for growth.
So, Lee must turn his attention to restoring Samsung's momentum in the global tech race. While the Samsung ecosystem is stronger than ever, as my colleague Victor argues, it would be nice if Sammy catches up with rivals on the battery front. Also, how about a slightly cheaper Galaxy Z Fold next time around? Eh, who am I kidding – the $2,000 price tag of the recently released Galaxy Z Fold 7 will probably be topped by the next Sammy foldable flagship. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!

Counterpoint: India's smartphone market boomed in Q2, iPhone 16 was the most-shipped phone

After a tepid Q1, India's smartphone market reached some record heights in Q2. The report from analysts over at Counterpoint Research has good news for every major company on the market. The wholesale value rose 18% in Q2 compared to the same period last year, this is the highest value ever seen in Q2. The ultra-premium segment – defined as phones over ₹45,000 – was the fastest growing segment and a major driver behind the strong Q2 results. This also resulted in the highest-ever Average Selling Price (ASP) for all smartphones in the Indian market. Apple and Samsung managed to make the most of that. India smartphone market in Q2 2025, volume share by brand Apple can celebrate the iPhone 16 as the most-shipped device in Q2. And it wasn't just that, this year Apple saw its highest-ever Q2 shipments in India. Rival Samsung had the biggest share (23%) of wholesale value. Samsung is second in terms of units shipped with strong demand for the Galaxy A and S series. Vivo (excluding iQOO) was the top brand by units shipped. It moved a lot of phones in the ₹10,000-₹15,000 range, mainly in the Y and T series. Third comes Oppo (excluding OnePlus) with strong demand for A and K series phones. OnePlus recorded a 75% growth year over year in the ultra-premium segment with the OnePlus 13 and 13R. Early indications show that the petite OnePlus 13s will be a hot seller too. Meanwhile, Realme expanded into the ultra-premium segment with the likes of the GT 7 series and especially the Aston Martin F1 co-branded Realme GT 7 Dream Edition, which attracted a lot of attention. India smartphone market in Q2 2025, wholesale value share by brand Motorola's G and Edge series pushed the company to an 86% growth in shipments, supported by an expanding retail network. In the sub-₹10,000 segment, Lava was the fastest-growing brand with a whopping 156% increase year over year. Counterpoint analysts credit the stock Android experience and improved after-sales service for the success of the brand. Nothing was the fastest-growing brand overall – for the sixth consecutive quarter! Nothing is the only brand to pull this off and its shipments grew an impressive 146% in Q2. The CMF Phone 2 Pro in particular is proving to be a hit. Finally, MediaTek remains the most popular chipset vendor in India with a 47% share of the market. However, Qualcomm is chasing – it grew 28% year over year and held 31% of the market in Q2.

The iPhone 16 leads another major sales chart, but Samsung claims an even bigger win over Apple

While Apple has (almost) no reason to be happy with its latest quarterly smartphone shipment figures in the US and Samsung can be mighty proud with its achievements in the same timeframe and the same key global market, the two mobile industry heavyweights can essentially claim similarly important victories in an equally meaningful region today. If you ask me, all three of the aforementioned brands deserve their laurels and all the glory corresponding with their respective regional titles. Apple has India's top-selling handset model in the iPhone 16, Samsung leads (perhaps surprisingly) the April-June value chart, and Vivo is the number one smartphone vendor by volume in the world's most populous nation... again. Apple is still nowhere to be found among India's top five smartphone vendors. | Image Credit -- Counterpoint Research The iPhone 16 , remember, was named the world's bestseller in Q1 2025, so it's certainly not surprising to see Apple's September 2024-released 6.1-inch device top another crucial popularity table, this time with no details offered on its rivals and their place in the same table. Samsung, meanwhile, managed to jump from second place during the opening quarter of this year to the number one spot in Q2 in terms of sales value, although the gap to the market's silver medalist is practically nonexistent. Said silver medalist is of course Apple, which was ranked first between January and March 2025 but a pretty distant second in the April-June timeframe of last year. So, yes, both Samsung and Apple can probably be pleased with the latest profits derived from their smartphone sales in India, which may not be entirely true for Vivo. The China-based brand continues to lead India's smartphone market in sales volume, boosting its dominant slice of the pie from 17 percent in Q2 2024 to 20 percent in the newest Counterpoint Research report, but its value share remains stagnant, at 15 percent, signaling a pretty big problem in the premium and ultra-premium segments. I'm talking primarily about Nothing and Motorola, which may not be among India's top five smartphone vendors, but are definitely likely to get there... eventually if they keep up their towering recent growth rates. Believe it or not, Nothing's Q2 shipments in the region are up 146 percent from the same period of last year. Just in case that number doesn't sound impressive enough, Carl Pe i's company is the nation's fastest-growing brand for the sixth consecutive quarter, which is an absolutely incredible feat no other smartphone maker has achieved before. Vivo can't be happy about Samsung and Apple's advantage in this value chart. | Image Credit -- Counterpoint Research As for Motorola's humbler but still phenomenal 86 percent year-on-year increase in Indian sales, that was apparently driven by both the Moto G and Edge families on the back of "expanded distribution and deeper retail penetration in smaller cities", which sounds like two factors that will inevitably propel the Lenovo-owned brand to the country's top five (or even top three) vendor group. In the aforementioned "ultra-premium" division of India's smartphone market, meanwhile, OnePlus remarkably managed to boost its shipments by 75 percent thanks to the company's latest high-end models (compact 13s included), although that still wasn't enough to push the brand's volume share higher than 2 percent. With or without its sister brand's numbers, Oppo ranked third in volume in Q2 2025, behind Vivo and Samsung but ahead of Realme, Xiaomi, or Poco, not to mention Apple, Motorola, and Nothing. All in all, sales went up in India by 8 percent compared to last year's second quarter, while the market's wholesale value absolutely exploded, gaining 18 percent in the same period of time.
