Minor girl dies after self-immolation bid in Odisha's Bargarh

BARGARH: Hours after sustaining over 80 per cent burn injuries in a suspected self-immolation attempt, a 13-year-old girl from Phiringimal under Gaesilat police limits lost her battle for life while undergoing treatment at VIMSAR, Burla, on Monday.
The incident occurred earlier and villagers found her lying unconscious in a football field with her body almost completely charred. A petrol bottle and a matchbox were recovered from the spot.
Around 7:30 am, the victim poured petrol on herself in a nearby field and set herself ablaze. Villagers rescued her but faced delays in arranging an ambulance, eventually taking her to a private hospital, from where she was shifted to VIMSAR, Burla.
Sources said the girl had been staying at her maternal uncle's house for the past weeks while her father was away as a migrant labourer and her mother was living at her maternal home.
She was studying at an Ashram School in Paikmal block and had come home over to meet her mother and celebrate Raksha Bandhan.
IGP (Northern Range) Himanshu Lal said: 'The girl was living here for the past one month, and she was supposed to return to her hostel in a day or two. We are investigating various angles, including what happened at her home earlier today and the possible reasons to ascertain the reason behind her extreme step..'

14-Year-Old Raped, Killed By Cousin Hours After Tying Rakhi To Him, Body Found Hanging

33-year-old man raped and murdered his minor cousin after she tied Rakhi on his wrist. He staged it as suicide, but police found evidence. Rakshabandhan, a festival where a brother promises to protect his sister, was shamed after a cousin allegedly raped and murdered his minor sister hours after she tied Rakhi on his wrist. The disturbing news was reported from Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya. As per the police, after killing the girl, he hung her body from a noose to make it look like suicide. As per a report by NDTV, after celebrating Rakshabandhan on Saturday, 33-year-old Surjeet went back to his home upon consuming a lot of alcohol. He raped the girl while she was asleep and then killed her. As per the police, the girl's father was asleep in the next room but couldn't hear anything. The girl's body was found hanging the next day. After the gruesome killing, Surjeet started misleading the investigation. Police got suspicious when he did not let any other family member answer the questions. As the police reached the murder spot, they were sure it was not a suicide case because there were bloodstains in several places. Her body was sent for a post-mortem, which confirmed rape. NDTV further reported that Surjeet was held and he confessed to the crime during interrogation. PTI report, the police have arrested the 29-year-old relative, the husband of the class 10 student's paternal aunt, under various sections of the BNS and POCSO Act. The police further said, the accused was remanded to judicial custody after a local court rejected his bail application. Police also detained four other accused who also video recorded the rape. As per the girl's complaint, the relative visited their residence on Raksha Bandhan on August 9, and took her to a deserted place where she was gang-raped. According to investigators, Sachin had gone to Faridabad on Sunday to drop his sister at her in-laws' house after she visited her parental home for Raksha Bandhan. Vikas had accompanied him. The duo were returning late Monday night when one of the tyres of their car exploded, causing the vehicle to veer violently off course. Sachin lost control, and the car overturned several times before hitting a roadside iron pole, police added. Commuters alerted the police control room, and two emergency response vehicles reached the spot. Both victims were rushed to Sector 10A civil hospital without waiting for ambulances due to their critical condition. Doctors declared Vikas dead on arrival and referred Sachin to a higher centre for advanced treatment. The PRO said no foul play was suspected by the families. An inquiry under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was initiated based on the statement of Vikas's family at Bilaspur police station. His body was handed over to the family after an autopsy on Tuesday.
