What's in a name? KL Rahul was almost named after a cricketer's son, but a real life mix-up tossed up an alias

Mint05-05-2025
Did you know Delhi Capitals' KL Rahul was supposed to be named after his father's favourite cricketer's son? But a mixup meant, the India batter ended up being 'incorrectly' named!
According to a report in English Jagran, Kannur Lokesh Rahul, or KL Rahul as we know him as, was supposed to be named after Sunil Gavaskar's son.
Rahul's father, Dr. KN Lokesh - a professor & former director at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) and big-time cricket fan - was a fan of the legendary former Indian batsman Gavaskar and wanted to name his son Rohan after his favourite cricketer's son.
Rohan Gavaskar himself was a well-known cricketer, having played for India in a few One Day Internationals.
However, Dr Lokesh wrongly assumed Gavaskar's son's name as Rahul and not Rohan, his actual name.
So, while doing the spadework for getting a birth certificate, Lokesh chose the name Rahul, and finalised the DC's star batsman's name as such.
So, KL Rahul is named after a cricketer who didn't even 'exist'.
Interestingly enough, KL Rahul's mother, Rajeshwari, who was a professor at Mangalore University, wanted to name him Rahul after Shah Rukh Khan's character names in movies.
SRK, who is the co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, has acted in a few movies where his character's name is Rahul, including hits such as Dil To Pagal Hai and Kuch Kuch Hota Hain.
Rahul has been DC's star batter in this year's IPL and also the team's top run getter. He has scored 371 runs from 9 innings at an average of 53 and a strike rate of 146.06, and has 3 fifties.
So, even if the first celebrity link was a mix-up, KL Rahul still ended up with a name tied with another.

Mohammed Siraj Set To Be Ignored For Asia Cup 2025: Report

Mohammed Siraj is reportedly likely to miss the 2025 Asia Cup, while Shubman Gill would need a big vouch from head coach Gautam Gambhir to be considered. The highest wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Mohammed Siraj, is likely to miss out on the 2025 Asia Cup. According to a report in Cricbuzz, spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh, and one of Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna are likely to constitute the pace attack for the multi-national tournament. Siraj has been the apple of the nation's eye after his match-winning fifer at the Oval in the last Test, but his T20 credentials aren't as solid as some of his competitors. He had a good, 16-wicket season in IPL 2025 but Prasidh (Purple Cap winner), Bumrah and Arshdeep all took more wickets than him. Whereas, Rana was one of the best bowlers in the league last season and impressed in his debut series against England earlier this year. Meanwhile, the report said, Test captain Shubman Gill is unlikely to make the cut, too, unless head coach Gautam Gambhir makes a strong case for him in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s selection meeting in Mumbai, scheduled for August 19. He was the second-highest run-scorer in the IPL 2025 and led the Gujarat Titans well for the second time, but his runs came as an opener. The report said Sanju Samson, who scored three centuries in T20Is last year, and Abhishek Sharma, the top-ranked batter by ICC in the format, are locked in as the first-choice options. The spot for a backup opener/batter is still available, but currently, Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals' Yashasvi Jaiswal is ahead. His Mumbai teammate Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to join him, as per the report, while Jitesh Sharma (and not the likes of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul) is expected to be the backup wicketkeeper. The report mentioned Axar Patel as the vice-captain, despite some rumors that Gill could replace him in that role with the team's eyes on the long-term future under captain Suryakumar Yadav. Hardik Pandya is cemented as one of the all-rounders, with Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar vying for the other spot. Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi are expected to join Patel in the spin quartet in helpful conditions in the UAE. India's campaign in the Asia Cup starts on September 10. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Team Indias Squad For Asia Cup 2025: Who Will Lead Indias Pace Attack - Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh

photoDetails english India's Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement has sparked intense debate over the pace attack, with Jasprit Bumrah's fitness remaining the biggest talking point. While Arshdeep Singh is a certain pick, the battle between Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna adds intrigue, especially after Prasidh's Purple Cap-winning IPL 2025 season. Veteran Mohammed Shami is set to miss out again in T20Is, while Harshit Rana could be a surprise inclusion if Bumrah is rested. With selectors also weighing pace-bowling all-rounders, the Asia Cup will not only decide India's bowling strength in UAE conditions but also shape plans for the T20 World Cup 2026. Updated:Aug 18, 2025, 06:00 AM IST 1. Jasprit Bumrah's Fitness Is the Biggest Selection Question 1 / 11 India's premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah remains under an injury cloud. If declared fit, he'll be an automatic starter, but selectors risk overburdening him ahead of the West Indies Test series. 2. Arshdeep Singh Locked In as India's Left-Arm Weapon 2 / 11 Arshdeep Singh has cemented his role in India's T20I setup with consistent new-ball strikes and death-over control, making him a guaranteed pick for the Asia Cup squad. 3. Mohammed Siraj Stakes His Claim After Red-Ball Heroics 3 / 11 Though out of India's T20 plans recently, Mohammed Siraj's form against England could force selectors to bring him back as a reliable seam option alongside Bumrah. 4. Prasidh Krishna's Purple Cap Season Boosts His Chances 4 / 11 IPL 2025 Purple Cap winner Prasidh Krishna is pushing hard for selection. His pace and bounce give India variety, though fitting him in depends largely on Bumrah's availability. 5. Mohammed Shami Missing Out Again in T20Is 5 / 11 Veteran Mohammed Shami looks set to miss another T20I tournament, with selectors prioritizing younger quicks like Arshdeep, Siraj, and Prasidh for the Asia Cup 2025 squad. 6. Harshit Rana a Dark Horse if Bumrah Is Rested 6 / 11 Youngster Harshit Rana could sneak into the squad if Bumrah isn't risked. His IPL breakthroughs make him a strong backup option, though experience may count against him. 7. Selection Likely Between Siraj and Prasidh – Not Both 7 / 11 With squad limits tight, it's likely either Mohammed Siraj or Prasidh Krishna will be picked, unless Bumrah's absence opens space for both. 8. Pace-Bowling All-Rounder Slot Adds Extra Competition 8 / 11 The inclusion of a pace-bowling all-rounder like Shivam Dube or Nitish Kumar Reddy indirectly affects specialist pacer slots, forcing selectors to balance depth with batting options. 9. Bumrah's Availability Could Change Entire Bowling Balance 9 / 11 If Bumrah plays, India can risk one extra spinner or all-rounder. If he misses out, selectors may pick four specialist pacers to maintain firepower in UAE conditions. 10. Asia Cup 2025 Could Define India's T20 World Cup Fast-Bowling Core 10 / 11 Beyond the tournament, these choices will shape India's 2026 T20 World Cup attack. Whether Bumrah leads or rests, the Asia Cup will set the tone for India's pace strategy. 11 / 11

Shahid Afridi's ex-Pakistan teammate agrees with Irfan Pathan's no-filter 'badtameez aadmi' tag: 'No class and decency'

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria agreed with Irfan Pathan's assessment of Shahid Afridi. During a recent appearance on a podcast, Irfan Pathan opened up about his battles with Afridi and how he dismissed him on 11 occasions in international cricket. Irfan Pathan minced no words as he labelled the former Pakistan captain a 'badtameez aadmi (ill-mannered man).' Kaneria has always been vocal about his issues with Afridi, accusing the latter of being discriminatory towards him during their playing days. Pathan alleged that it was the former Pakistan all-rounder who started the interaction by messing around with his hair. However, Pathan didn't take kindly to this interaction as he was not friends with Afridi. The former Indian pacer, who was a youngster back then, did not hold back as he launched a scathing attack. 'The childish behaviour was actually his. He was not my friend. After that, Afridi said some abusive words to me. His seat was right next to mine,' said Pathan. "I said, "He (Afridi) has eaten dog meat, he has been barking for a long time" After that, Afridi couldn't say anything. Whatever he might have said, I would have just said, 'Look, he is barking again," he added. Also Read: Irfan Pathan's 'dog meat' retaliation silenced Shahid Afridi's 'barking' Danish Kaneria reacted to the viral video clip of the same, saying Afridi lacks 'class and decency' and he often resorts to personal attacks. 'Irfan bhai, you're absolutely right. He always resorts to personal attacks—be it on someone's family or their religion. Class and decency clearly aren't his strengths,' Kaneria wrote on X (formerly Twitter). History between Kaneria and Afridi There is no love lost between Danish Kaneria and Shahid Afridi. Some years back, Kaneria alleged that he had to face religious discrimination while playing for Pakistan. He claimed that some of his teammates were reluctant to eat with him because of his faith. He also alleged that Shahid Afridi, a senior member of the Pakistan dressing room, encouraged other players to ostracise him. However, Afridi denied all these allegations, calling Kaneria a 'liar' and trying to gain sympathy after being banned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for involvement in a spot-fixing scandal in county cricket. Kaneria felt he was targetted by senior Pakistan players and was not given adequate support. On the other hand, Afridi accused Kaneria of not accepting his mistake and trying to gain sympathy.
