Search for new Indian football head coach begins; ‘respectful', ‘cultural sensitivity' among AIFF's lengthy list of requirements
AIFF acting general secretary M Satyanarayan had earlier told The Indian Express that the process would be initiated in 'a couple of days' after it announced the departure of Marquez. He further said that the federation doesn't have a potential candidate to replace Marquez. 'We will take a couple of days to prepare to frame a job profile and then we will put it out. Let everyone apply and then we will take a call,' said Satyanarayan.
The federation has said in its website on Friday that the duration of the contract of the coach and remuneration can be decided 'during the interview period'. 'The 'Head Coach – Senior Men's National Team' will report to the AIFF Secretary General and is accountable for the performance of the team in all matches and competitions it participates in during the term of the coach's contract,' the AIFF stated on its website. 'The Head Coach will work closely with the National Team Department, the National Team Director and the Technical Director, to strengthen the position and performances of the Men's Senior National Team,' it added.
Minimum of 10 to 15 years of coaching experience at the elite youth and senior level football has been listed as a basic requirement. 'Experience as the first team coach (head coach) of the senior national team will be preferred with experience of coaching in the World Cup and continental championship qualifiers being an advantage,' the AIFF added. Minimum of AFC/UEFA Pro license or equivalent along with experience as a football player (not necessarily at the highest national level) would also be assessed.
Aside from usual requirements of being flexible, efficient and resourceful, the AIFF also wants the next coach to have 'sound experience in the management of relationships; understanding needs, cultural sensitivity, and working with AIFF partners including media and sponsors.'
The federation said that the 'primary objective' of the new coach would be 'to ensure that the National Team wins the maximum number of matches and competitions it participates in.' The appointee will report regularly to the AIFF Secretary General and the Technical Committee, and work in close cooperation with the National Team Department, the National Team Director and the Technical Director.
Marquez's predecessor Igor Stimac's relationship with the AIFF hierarchy turned particularly frought towards the end of his tenure. The Croat also made a number of scathing statements about the federation and the general administration of the sport in India after he was sacked. The AIFF has now listed maintaining a 'positive working relationship with AIFF President, Secretary General, Technical Director, Media, and other relevant administrative staff' among its requirements for the head coach.

NEW DELHI: All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey finds merit in government's stance to encourage players of Indian origin living abroad to play for the country, saying it was "a ray of hope" for bettering national team's performance but he also underscored the difficulties in implementing the policy. The new Khelo Bharat Niti (National Sports Policy), which got Cabinet approval on July 1, signalled a departure from the government's earlier stand that only Indian passport holders can represent the country. "When it comes to the performance of the national team, one of the areas of the policy is something we have worked on actively -- the access to India's diaspora talent and I am happy that the policy included reference to the matter," Chaubey said a statement. "This is a positive statement of intent and the AIFF will continue to work with FIFA and the government to do all things possible to strengthen the national team. "For some years, there has been a clamour for the inclusion of players with OCI cards in the national team. We've seen countries like Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Hongkong, Singapore, the Middle Eastern Nations, and those in Europe take advantage of Naturalised Players with dual citizenship to strengthen their teams." The ban on Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) card holders from representing the country in 2008 prevented many players from contributing to India's growth in several sports. However, the 20-page Khelo Bharat Niti document stated that sports can serve as a powerful bridge between the Indian diaspora and the country, fostering emotional, cultural and social connections. "To strengthen this bond, dedicated sporting events and leagues can be organized specifically for and among the Indian diaspora," it said. "Wherever feasible, promising and prominent Indian-origin athletes living abroad may be encouraged to come back and play for India at the international level." Chaubey, though, hinted at possible obstacles in taking advantage of the policy. "Some clarifications in the Indian context might be helpful at this stage. As per the FIFA Statutes a player must hold a passport of a nation he or she wishes to represent and must produce it on match day," he said. "While an OCI card grants certain social and economic rights to an individual, it is not equivalent to an Indian passport. Given that our laws do not provide for dual citizenship, it is up to us strategies how we may capitalise on the opportunity to access the diaspora talent and integrate them into the national teams as per the FIFA regulations as well as Indian citizenship law. "The policy direction provides a ray of hope and we are intent on exploring it to its logical conclusion," he added.

"The previous ODI was in Nottingham and because of the rain, there was a puddle of water holding up play at Trent Bridge. Due to the weather, the players did not have much to do and we were tasked with the arrangement of food for the players. "A BCCI official was with me and he got to know that my 50th birthday was approaching and the next game was here at Edgbaston. Little did I know that I would be called to dressing room and presented with the jersey in the following game at this very ground," said Sykes, who also feels proud about carrying the 2019 World Cup trophy into the field ahead of the New Zealand-Pakistan contest in the ICC event. As he scrolls through his phone, you would find pictures of him with current and former players including former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who was in charge of the team in 2014 (Team Director), 2018 and 2021 (head coach). Shastri, commentating on the ongoing India England Test series, is among the favourites of Sykes alongside Geoffrey Boycott and Malcolm Marshall. "I have watched plenty of country games involving Marshall at Hampshire. Boycott was someone I looked up to growing up. Cricket is the only sport that I follow," he said. Shastri was in the media box when Sykes narrated his cricketing journey. "I get to be around the people I have admired. I can't really complain," Sykes summed up.
