The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2025: Who takes the top spot - and how does Europe fare?

Yahoo20-06-2025
The World's 50 Best Restaurants has announced this year's recipients of 'The World's Best Restaurant' - one of the world's most prestigious food awards.
The awards ceremony took place last night in Turin, Italy, where the crowd gathered to celebrate the top restaurants and chefs for 2025. A panel of more than 1,000 experts, split into 27 regions around the world, came together to decide on the final ranking.
So, what is the World's Best Restaurant this year?
The accolade went to Maido in Lima, Peru – which was placed at number 5 in the 2024 awards and now unseats last year's winner, Disfrutar in Barcelona, Spain, to the top spot.
Maido's Lima-born chef Mitsuharu Tsumura cooks a fusion of Latin American and Japanese flavours, and said: 'We talk a lot about sustainability of the environment, but we rarely talk about human sustainability. I think this industry can be an example of how we can bring people together with the power of food.'
Every year, the panel awards special prizes to chefs, front-of-house staff, and activists who are leading the charge in hospitality in 2025.
This year's special awards went to the Best Female Chef, Pichaya 'Pam' Soontornyanakij of Potong, Bangkok and Mindy Woods in Byron Bay, winner of the Champions of Change 2025 award.
The World's Best Pastry Chef award went to Parisian chef Maxime Frederic, while the Estrella Damm Chefs' Choice Award went to Alberta Adrià, head chef of Enigma in Barcelona.
The highest-ranking restaurants on each continent were given a special mention.
Maido, as the best restaurant in the world, takes care of South America. Incidentally, Peru was well represented in the Top 50 list, as three other Lima-based establishments joined Maido: Kjolle (9); Mérito (26); Mayta (39).
Tresind Studio in Dubai (ranked number 27 in this year's awards) was named the best restaurant in the Middle East. The best restaurant in Asia is Gaggan in Bangkok, at number 6, while the best restaurant in North America is Quintonil in Mexico City (number 3).
The best restaurant in Europe is Asador Etxebarri in Spain (number 2 this year and last year). Spain also has DiverXO in Madrid in the global Top 5, retaining its number 4 spot.
Elsewhere in the Top 20, Denmark's Alchemist (Copenhagen) ranks number 5 and climbs three spots compared to last year; France's Paris-based Table by Bruno Verjus drops to number 8 from its number 3 ranking in 2024, and Plénitude (also in Paris) has the 14th spot this year, up four compared to last year; and the UK's Ikoyi, which was ranked 42nd in 2024, jumps up to number 15.
Italy is the European country with the most restaurants in 2025's Top 20 list, with Lido 84 in Lake Garda, Reale in Castel di Sangro and Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler in Brunico all ranking 16th, 18th and 20th respectively.

‘The Twisted Tale Of Amanda Knox' Release Schedule—When Do New Episodes Drop?

Hulu's newest true crime show has arrived. Following the success of limited series like 2025's Good American Family and 2022's The Dropout, viewers are now transported to Italy for one of the most infamous real-life murder cases involving an American student abroad: Amanda Knox. The series, which premiered on Aug. 20, stars Grace Van Patten (Nine Perfect Strangers, Tell Me Lies) as the American college student who becomes entangled in a high-profile investigation for the 2007 sexual assault and murder of Meredith Kercher during her study abroad year in Italy. Kercher, a 21-year-old British exchange student and one of Knox's three roommates, was found dead from a knife attack in their shared flat in Perugia, Italy. Knox and her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were arrested and imprisoned for the crime. In 2009, both were convicted of the killing — Knox received a 26-year sentence while Sollecito received 25 years. Though the ruling was overturned in 2011, Knox's legal battle was far from over. In 2014, both Knox and Sollecito were reconvicted of murder, which was finally overturned in 2015. The Twisted Tale Of Amanda Knox follows 'the eponymous American college student, who arrives in Italy for her study abroad only to be wrongfully imprisoned for murder weeks later,' the synopsis reads. 'The series traces Amanda's relentless fight to prove her innocence and reclaim her freedom, and examines why authorities and the world stood so firmly in judgment.' Knox serves as an executive producer on the limited series, alongside Monica Lewinsky, Knox's husband, Christopher Robinson and Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid's Tale). 'This is not a show about the worst experience of someone's life,' Knox told The New York Times. 'This is the show of a person's choice to find closure on their own terms and to reclaim a sense of agency in their own life after that agency has been stolen from them.' Amanda Knox And Grace Van Patten Spoke Often While Filming Hulu Series

Grace Van Patten delivers a remarkable performance portraying Amanda Knox in the new Hulu series about Knox's fight against an Italian legal system that believed she was involved in the brutal murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, on November 1, 2007. Knox was wrongfully convicted later that year and spent nearly four years in prison for a crime she didn't commit. The American college student was studying abroad in Perugia, Italy, at the time and was convicted alongside her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, in 2009. They were both fully exonerated by Italy's Supreme Court in 2015. Now, a decade later, Knox is sharing her story in the eight-episode series The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, created by K.J. Steinberg (This Is Us). The show is based on Knox's New York Times bestseller, Waiting to be Heard: A Memoir. In an interview ahead of the August 20 premiere, Van Patten shared her experience portraying Knox. Preparation included numerous conversations in person and over the phone, as well as a crash course in Italian. "There was constant communication, and I was able to ask her as many questions as I possibly could. She was extremely open with me, with anything I wanted to know about, which was so amazing and helpful because my only job was to help people understand her and who she was as a human, not just as a picture on the news with a headline above her face.' Fans recognize and love Van Patten as Lucy Albright in Hulu's Tell Me Lies (season three is coming soon), but this is her first time portraying a real person. Her performance deserves awards consideration; she truly captures Knox's complex range of emotions during this traumatic, life-changing ordeal. The result is a heartfelt, often infuriating story of an innocent young woman who endured a series of injustices by a flawed and corrupt legal system that pressured her into a confession after days of questioning her in a language she wasn't fluent in, with accusations based on tainted and mishandled evidence, all while her story was sensationalized by a cruel media. The truth about Kercher's murder eventually came out, and Rudy Guede was convicted and received a 30-year prison sentence in October 2008, though that sentence was reduced on appeal before he was released early for good behavior in 2021. Guede will be back in court this fall, facing sexual assault and violence charges from a former girlfriend. The limited series is executive-produced by Monica Lewinsky, Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid's Tale), and Knox, who, since her exoneration, has become a respected author of three books, a journalist, activist, and podcaster. Van Patten stars alongside Sharon Horgan, John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli, Giuseppe De Domenico, and Roberta Mattei. Side note: Van Patten's real-life sister Anna Van Patten portrays Knox's sister Deanna in the series. Van Patten wants viewers to understand how vulnerable Knox was during that time. She was portrayed by the media as a vixen, but in reality, she was a young, naive, innocent woman who had just begun an incredible adventure, only for this nightmare to happen. 'Hopefully, people are reminded while watching this that she was just a 20-year-old girl going through something absolutely unimaginable.' She shared that filming took place in Italy for two months, with the final four months in Budapest. Regarding her Italian language skills before preparing for the role, Van Patten said that she knew only basic Italian. 'I am Italian. My dad pretends to speak a little bit. Now that I know it, I don't think he does,' she laughed. 'I had about two months before we started shooting. I learned as much as I could while learning my lines and knowing what I was saying.' The series highlights how low Knox fell during that time; she was suicidal during her imprisonment. It also shows her incredible strength. When asked to describe her, Van Patten calls Knox resilient. 'She's extremely brave. What I found so beautiful about her was how willing she was to trust me to tell her story after millions of people tried to tell it for her,' Van Patten said. 'Her willingness to trust me to portray her emotions was an honor and made me even more motivated to do it correctly. She's so inspiring to me; her humor, her bravery, and her ability to maintain positivity in moments where it seems unimaginable. I admire her ability to forgive and not hold on to anger. You see all of these things play out through the series, from her life before the tragedy, during her time in prison, and even now. She's still dealing with it, but she has a beautiful mindset. She has tried to regain control and is doing so with empathy.' When asked why she believes Knox was accused of this brutal crime and how the situation spiraled so far out of control, Van Patten paused briefly before responding. 'That is a great question that I hope everyone asks after watching this, because it doesn't make sense. There is no answer. There was no evidence. I think it just highlights the differences in people and perspectives. These older Italian men who were part of the judicial system were not familiar with a person like Amanda. She was a young, free-spirited woman. It was a misunderstanding, and instead of just accepting it as a misunderstanding, they saw it as whatever they saw it as. It was a clash of two different belief systems and views on the world.'

'Emily in Paris' Season 5 takes a trip to Venice and gets a release date. See the 1st photos.

The fifth season of the Lily Collins-led show will debut on Netflix later this year. Emily in… Italy, still? On Wednesday, Netflix unveiled the premiere date of Emily in Paris Season 5, along with a series of first-look photos. The upcoming season will continue to follow the titular American marketing executive, played by Lily Collins, as she embraces a change of scene: life in Venice, Italy. 'This season is a tale of two cities. Rome and Paris,' creator Darren Star told Netflix's Tudum. 'Straddling both, Emily takes love and life to the next level.' Emily is now seemingly living the Italian dream: She's landed the career opportunity of a lifetime and is finally in an uncomplicated relationship with a charming Italian guy. The official Season 5 description, however, hints at trouble ahead: 'Now the head of Agence Grateau Rome, Emily faces professional and romantic challenges as she adapts to life in a new city. But just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle, until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships. Tackling conflict with honesty, Emily emerges with deeper connections, renewed clarity, and a readiness to embrace new possibilities.' Below, we're breaking down everything there is to know about Season 5 of Emily in Paris. When does Season 5 come out? All 10 episodes of Emily in Paris will be available to stream on Netflix on Dec. 18, 2025. Who will be part of the Season 5 cast? Among the confirmed and returning cast members are: Lily Collins (Emily Cooper), Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie Grateau), Ashley Park (Mindy Chen), Lucas Bravo (Gabriel), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Bruno Gouery (Luc), William Abadie (Antoine Lambert), Lucien Laviscount (Alfie), Eugenio Franceschini (Marcello), Thalia Besson (Genevieve), Paul Forman (Nico) and Arnaud Binard (Laurent G). Deadline announced two new additions to the Season 5 roster in July: Bryan Greenberg (Suits LA, Junction) will play Jake, an American expat living in Paris, and Michèle Laroque (Brilliantissime) will play Yvette, one of Sylvie's oldest friends. In May, Deadline also confirmed that Oscar-nominated actress Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, Will & Grace) joined the cast. Driver will portray Princess Jane, a friend of Sylvie's who marries into royalty. Camille Razat, however, is one cast member who will not be returning for Season 5. Razat, who's starred as Gabriel's on-again, off-again girlfriend since the first season, confirmed the news in an Instagram post from April 2025. 'After an incredible journey, I've made the decision to step away from Emily in Paris,' she wrote. 'This character has meant a lot to me, and I feel that her storyline has naturally come to an end. It felt like the right moment to explore new horizons.' Where did we leave off, anyway? Where do we begin?! When Gabriel finds out that Camille is pregnant — which she lies about, by the way — he begins to prioritize her and their unborn baby over Emily, which strains their relationship. At one point, Gabriel leaves Emily stranded at the top of a mountain to attend to Camille, prompting Emily's realization that she'll never be the priority in their relationship. Emily breaks up with Gabriel as a result. Eager to get away, Emily agrees to oversee the opening of a new Agence Grateau office in Rome. There she sparks a romance with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), an heir to a prominent Italian cashmere company. Season 4 ends with Emily back in Rome in a more permanent capacity, now as the lead of the new Agence Grateau location. Her burgeoning relationship with Marcello also influences her decision to take the job. Gabriel, meanwhile, learns of Camille's "nonpregnancy." While the series resumes in Italy, Star is assuring fans that Emily will be returning to France. 'She didn't change her Instagram handle to 'Emily in Rome.' She is working in Rome sometimes. Sylvie's company has an office in Rome. Emily's getting that on its feet,' Star previously told Deadline. 'I don't necessarily think that it means a permanent — in my mind, it's definitely not a permanent — move to Rome. We're not leaving Paris.' Do we know what the storylines are about? While we don't know a ton of details, we do know that Emily will continue to explore things with Marcello, which Collins revealed she's on board with. 'Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance,' she told Tudum. 'We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time.' Star told Tudum that the strength of Emily and Marcello's connection will factor into Season 5. 'I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection. A lot of that's going to continue to play out next season,' he said. What has the cast said? In an October 2024 interview with IndieWire, Bravo hinted at the possibility of not returning to Emily in Paris. 'The 'sexy chef' was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take. I've never been so far away from him,' he said. Bravo initially saw 'a lot of me in [Gabriel]' in Season 1, but was disappointed that they 'made him kind of unaware of his surroundings' and that he was 'always victimizing' and 'being completely lost in translation.' 'It kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole. I really grew apart from him,' he added. The Freedom star seemed to have changed his tune by April 2025. In an interview with Parade, Bravo revealed plans to begin filming the fifth season of Emily in Paris in May and that 'it's the best season so far.' 'I had lunch with Darren a few days back, and he told me a bit without telling me too much. I think fans are going to lose it. It's the craziest one so far,' he told the outlet.
