In a first, Munnar church holds Mass in Hindi for migrant workers

The Mount Carmel Basilica in Munnar has began holding a Mass in Hindi for migrant workers here. The first Hindi Mass was held on Sunday at 2 p.m.
An increasing number of Hindi-speaking migrant workers in the plantation sector has lead to the decision, according to church authorities.
'Though the migrant workers were attending the weekly Malayalam and Tamil Mass, they could not fully participate in the prayers due to the language barrier. Following this, they requested for a Hindi Mass. We shared their request with the basilica rector Fr. Michael Valayinjiyil, who gave a positive response,' says Fr. Christhudas, assistant vicar of Ave Maria Church Devikulam.
Increase in participants
'Initially, the Hindi Mass will take place at the Mount Carmel Basilica on the last Sunday of every month. If there is an increase in participants, the Mass will be held every Sunday,' he says.
'Over the years, Masses were held in many languages in the churches in Munnar, including in Tamil, Malayalam, and English. But, a Hindi Mass is first here. Through a Mass in their own language, we hope the faithful can fulfil their spiritual needs in a new place,' says Fr. Christhudas.
Meanwhile, the church authorities are continuing their efforts to track Catholic migrant workers in Munnar. Mostly, Catholic workers from Jharkhand are working in tea plantations including Lakshmi, Kadalar, Kallar, Rajamala, Vaguvarai, Thenmala, Thalayar and Chenduvara here. Nearly 100 Christian families are working in various tea plantations in Munnar, says the Church.
Long-pending demand
Already, a large number of migrant workers are attending the Mass in the Mount Carmel Basilica every Sunday, says Richard Joseph, the church's sexton. 'The Hindi Mass was a long-pending demand of the migrant workers,' says Mr. Joseph.
Fr. Christhudas, who had worked in north India for many years, led the Hindi Mass on Sunday. After the Mass, Bishop of Vijayapuram Mar Sebastian Thekkethecheril blessed the faithful and interacted with the workers.
Mount Carmel Basilica, the first Catholic church in the high ranges, was established by Spanish missionary Fr. Alfonse Maria De Los Angles for plantation workers, mostly from Tamil Nadu, in 1890.

An ancient Vishnu temple close to the River Coovam

Sridevi in this temple is worshipped as Kamalavalli and Bhudevi is known as Kanakavalli which is an unique feature. The utsava-murti (processional image), also seen with Sridevi and Bhudevi, is just like the main deity except that the left hand is in varada hasta (boon-giving gesture). Although most Vishnu temples in Tamil Nadu have a shrine for Goddess Lakshmi, there are a few which do not, and this temple falls into the second category. However, the utsava-murti of this Goddess, known as Kamalavalli Thayar, is worshipped in the main sanctum. Attesting to the fact that this is an ancient temple is a Tamil inscription which had been discovered on a slab in the ardha-mandapa in front of the central shrine. This fragmentary epigraph is datable to the reign of Jatavarman Tribhuvanachakravartin Sundara Pandya Deva, king of Madurai. In all likelihood, this ruler was Jatavarman Sundara Pandya I (1251-1268 CE), an emperor who enlarged the Pandyan kingdom into an Empire. It appears to record an endowment made by this king for the expenses of celebrating the Panguni festival in the temple of Thiruvirkolam Udaiya Nayanar of Koovam alias Tyagasamudranallur. Since this inscription records that this donation was made in his 26th regnal year, it must be dated 1277 CE. The temple mentioned in this lithic record is that of Tripurantaka Swami in Koovam, about 15 km from Sattarai, which is a Padal Petra Sthalam or temple eulogised by the Nayanmars, located close to the source of River Coovam. Many festivals are celebrated in this small, but neatly maintained Karumanikka Perumal temple such as Pournami in Chittirai; Panguni Uttiram; Vaikuntha Ekadasi in Margazhi and Andal Thirukalyanam.

It is commonly perceived that in the Kali Yuga we are living in, people tend to place rivalry, competitiveness, avariciousness and gathering of power and pelf as the topmost agenda, instead of accumulating virtuous deeds, said P. Swaminathan. Many devotees give token importance to rituals, forgetting all the good things our scriptures tell us, on how to lead a virtuous life. It is a reality in today's world that brothers are at loggerheads over property and parental responsibility, with families failing to forge the kind of bond that is not only ideal but also highly desirable for happy coexistence in this world. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata reiterate the importance of sibling bonding and virtuous conduct. Rama was to be anointed as the king when Kooni, with her narrow vision, convinced Kaikeyi to seek her son Bharata's coronation in place of the older brother. When this was conveyed to Rama, He readily agreed to obey his parents' wishes, with a smiling countenance, and left for the forests to live like a hermit for 14 years. An equally noble Bharata refused to ascend the throne and when his efforts to persuade Rama to return to Ayodhya and rule the kingdom failed, he installed Rama's paduka on the throne and remained a regent. The Mahabharata, likewise, shows how the Pandava brothers took the cue from the virtuous older brother Yudhisthira and obeyed him in toto. Reading scriptures and adhering to a dharmic way of life has been followed by kings, especially in Tamil Nadu, from time immemorial. In the sixteenth century, Varathunga Pandian and Athivirarama Pandian were ruling over the areas around Tirunelveli. The older brother was a staunch devotee of Kasi Viswanatha, while the younger one held Lord Siva as everything. Both the kings and their wives were also Tamil pundits. Once, when Athivirarama Pandian wrote a poem on Nala and Damayanthi and showed it to his older brother and his queen. Neither one minced words on criticising the work. An incensed Athivirarama decided to invade his brother's kingdom. Hearing of his fury, the older brother sent him a missive, extolling sibling bonding and dissuaded him from a disastrous path. A contrite Athivirarama travelled to Kasi to get rid of his sin.
