Another no-decision for Cade Horton as the Chicago Cubs lose 6-1 to the Boston Red Sox

Chicago Tribune21-07-2025
Let the what-if game begin when it comes to Cade Horton.
Four of the rookie pitcher's most sparkling performances on the major-league level for the Chicago Cubs have resulted in no-decisions.
In no-decisions against Miami, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Boston, Horton has allowed one run on 16 hits in 23 2/3 innings for a 0.38 ERA.
What if he wins those games? His record would be 7-3 instead of 3-3.
The latest one was the roughest. The Cubs came into Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox with the best record in MLB and facing one of the hottest pitchers in baseball — former White Sox left-hander Garret Crochet.
Horton left the game in the sixth inning with a 1-0 lead and reliever Caleb Thielbar helped get him out of a jam.
But the Red Sox tagged relievers Ryan Pressly, Drew Pomeranz and Ethan Roberts for three home runs and six runs in the seventh and eighth innings. They went on to win, 6-1, in front of a Wrigley Field crowd of 40,433.
Horton gave up two hits, walked three and struck out four in 5 2/3 innings.
'It sucks losing,' Horton said. 'But it's all a process and it's a long season. I just want to continue to get better each and every day and take the positives and the negatives and evaluate tomorrow.'
Cubs manager Craig Counsell liked what he saw out of the 23-year-old Horton.
'He did a nice job and got us into the sixth inning,' Counsell said. 'He is showing confidence in his stuff and how to make adjustments in the game. He went up against a good lineup today and I thought he pitched very, very well.'
Horton gave up the three walks, which led off the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but he was able to stay clean.
Pressly walked Trevor Story to open the seventh, but he did not fare as well after Wilyer Abreu parked a pitch into the right-field seats — the first of his two home runs in the game — after the Red Sox (54-47) mustered just one run in the first 24 innings of this three-game series.
The Cubs (59-40) are now tied with Milwaukee for the National League Central lead after the Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers, including Sunday's 6-5 road win.
Crochet came into the game leading the majors in strikeouts with 160 and had an 8-1 record with a 2.13 ERA in road games. He was coming off the first complete-game shutout of his career, a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on July 12.
Crochet had not lost a game since May 26. He gave up eight hits and two walks but allowed just one run against the Cubs. Ian Happ singled home Dansby Swanson in the second inning for the lone Cubs run.
'We had a lot of hard-hit balls and a lot of good at-bats,' Happ said, 'Overall, we had some really good swings out there.'
Crochet's ability to get out of trouble was not lost on Horton.
'He's a pro, he's a vet and he knows how to navigate lineups,' Horton said. 'It's really fun to watch. There is a lot to learn from that.'
Horton said he tried not to get too excited facing the Red Sox lineup.
'I don't need to get amped up,' Horton said. 'I think I actually need to slow myself down more. With the environment and facing these guys, I know the energy is going to be there.
'It's all about slowing the game down and controlling it from the jump.'
Before the All-Star break, the Cubs won two of three on the road against the New York Yankees, and after the break, they took two of three against a team that had won 10 straight games.
'This group really believes in itself,' Happ said. 'All of the guys in the room will say that. Just the way we played this series — it was solid fundamental baseball the whole time.'
The Cubs open a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Monday and have not announced a starting pitcher.
Using an opener and the rest of the bullpen is an option, but the team used five relievers on Sunday. They could dip into the minor leagues and call up an arm, possibly Ben Brown.
Brown was in the rotation earlier this season and was 1-3 with a 5.30 ERA in eight appearances, including six starts.
Starting pitcher Javier Assad, who has been on the injury list with an oblique strain all season, is scheduled to start his first rehab game since April on Thursday for the Arizona Complex League Cubs when they take on the Athletics.
His catcher?
It will be Miguel Amaya, who also has a left oblique strain and has been taking live at-bats and catching bullpen sessions.
Assad was 7-6 with a 3.73 ERA with the Cubs in 29 appearances in 2024. He is 14-11 with a 3.40 ERA in 70 appearances for the Cubs since making his debut in 2022. He was hurt in spring training this year and suffered a setback in April during his second rehab appearance for Triple-A Iowa.
Amaya was hitting .280 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 27 games before his injury on May 24.

Cubs Showing Interest In Trade Deadline Deal For 2 Different Star Pitchers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. The Chicago Cubs desperately need to add some pitching ahead of the trade deadline, both to the starting rotation and the bullpen. The Cubs' bullpen has been a middle-of-the-pack unit for the entire season, and an upgrade should be expected. After bringing in Ryan Pressly in the offseason, the Cubs didn't do much else to upgrade the unit. The starting rotation is a much bigger issue. The Cubs came into the season with a hole in their rotation, and that hole has only gotten bigger. Jameson Taillon has missed time with an injury, and Justin Steele is out for the season with an elbow injury. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 19: Manager Craig Counsell #11 of the Chicago Cubs looks on before a game against the Boston Red Sox at Wrigley Field on July 19, 2025 in Chicago, reporter Ari Alexander recently reported the Cubs were showing interest in a trade for three different pitchers: Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan and Miami Marlins hurler Edward Cabrera. Finnegan would be the easiest player to acquire. The Cubs could slot him into the backend of the bullpen, manning either the seventh, eighth or ninth inning on any given night. The righty isn't a top closer in the league, but he's been a solid force for the Nationals. Cabrera would be another blockbuster move that would make the Cubs better in 2025 and beyond. He's under team control through 2028 and seems to only be getting better. The Cubs need to make a move. Adding any of these stars would push them in the right direction as the National League is up for grabs. More MLB: Padres' Trade Deadline Takes Wild Turn After Red Sox's Jarren Duran Decision

Cubs Pitching Target Seth Lugo Signs Multi-Year Extension With Royals

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It's back to the drawing board for the Chicago Cubs for their starting pitcher acquisition at the trade deadline. In a shocking update, MLB insider Jeff Passan reported Sunday night that the Kansas City Royals have signed Seth Lugo to a multi-year extension. BREAKING: Right-hander Seth Lugo and the Kansas City Royals are finalizing a multiyear contract extension, sources tell ESPN. One of the best potential trade candidates this deadline season -- and top free agent arms this winter -- instead will remain in Kansas City. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 28, 2025 The details of the extension are unknown at this time, but the Cubs now have to figure out where to pivot next. Pitchers such as Sandy Alcántara, Edward Cabrera, Mitch Keller, Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly come to mind as the new targets for the Cubs. Heading into Thursday's deadline, Lugo was one of the most highly sought after pitchers. Teams were drawn to him based on the fact that he would be a rental and require less of a return to go back to Kansas City. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 23: Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals delivers a pitch against the Chicago Cubs during the first inning at Wrigley Field on July 23, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 23: Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals delivers a pitch against the Chicago Cubs during the first inning at Wrigley Field on July 23, 2025 in Chicago, starting pitching market was already thin, and eliminating Lugo from the market makes it even thinner. Teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins now know they can ask for even more in this sellers' market. Adding to the rotation has been a major need for the Cubs since the season began, and Chicago knew it was going to have to overpay for a starter at the deadline. The race in the National League Central is tight with the Milwaukee Brewers winning 15 of their last 21 games. The Brew Crew have made things tight heading into the final two months of the season. Pressure is now on Jed Hoyer and his staff to pivot as they know the Cubs need to add at least one quality starter or else it will be a very short postseason run, if one even happens at all. Red Sox manager Alex Cora claims ESPN 'made s--- up' about MLB trade rumors during his time at network

With less than one week left before the MLB trade deadline passes, teams are revving up the phones, while players await their fates for the remainder of the 2025 season and beyond. Players will tell you they try to keep the outside noise just that – outside. But it's hard not to see it coming up on social media feeds, sports talk shows, and more avenues of acquiring news. However, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora doesn't want his players to believe everything they hear and read. He singled out one outlet in particular – the one he used to work for. "I can tell them stories about ESPN in the green room, how people made s--- up – you know, trades," Cora said to reporters on Sunday. "And I can tell them that don't believe everything that is said, you know?" Cora is aware the trade deadline rumors are what fans want to see, as teams try to make their squads better or look ahead to the future by dealing away top talent for future assets. "You get into any social platform, and if you're looking for baseball, then your feed is going to be full of baseball stories, right?" Cora continued. "And there's a lot of people that are very responsible with their trades, rumors and their contacts. Others, they're not. So just block it." A source familiar with the matter told Fox News Digital that ESPN stands by its reporting, though it wasn't clear what Cora, who departed the company nearly 10 years ago to join the Houston Astros' coaching staff, was referring to. "I got stories, man. I don't wanna bury people," Cora said when a reporter asked who at ESPN he was referring to. Cora understands how tough the trade deadline can be from a player perspective considering his 14 seasons as one in MLB. The Red Sox are one of those teams with a rabid fan base always watching to see what they're going to do this time of year. It's also worth noting that one of the top trade names going around is Jarren Duran, the team's All-Star outfielder who could be on the move before 6 p.m. on Thursday. Boston, though, currently sits in a good playoff position out of a tough AL East division at 57-50. They own the second Wild Card slot in the American League, just behind their division-rival New York Yankees.
