Trump's Threat of ‘Foreign' Film Tariffs Stirs Anxiety in the U.K.

New York Times08-05-2025

President Trump's desire to 'make Hollywood great again' by wielding his preferred economic weapon — tariffs — has sent a shiver through Britain's film industry.
British producers, camera workers, costume designers and other film crew woke up Monday to Mr. Trump's message that he wanted to impose 100 percent tariffs on films made in 'foreign lands.' This threat is particularly alarming in Britain, where Hollywood blockbusters are a critical part of the industry.
'It came completely out of the blue,' said Philippa Childs, the head of Bectu, the British union for workers in the creative arts. 'It's pretty frightening.'
Last year, nearly 90 percent of the 5.6 billion pounds, or $7.8 billion, spent on film and high-end TV production in Britain came from abroad, mostly the United States, such as the upcoming 'Jurassic World Rebirth' and 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' Britain's biggest and most esteemed studios are home to streaming giants like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime. For decades, productions have been drawn to Britain by its generous tax breaks but also its experienced work force, which has been making Hollywood hits since 'Star Wars' in the 1970s.

Julian Harris: Is Sorry the Hardest Word for UK Chancellors?

By Nearly three years on, the Tories have apologized for their disastrous mini-budget that put sterling into freefall and forced the Bank of England to prop up government debt. Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said today that the party 'put at risk the very stability which Conservatives had always said must be carefully protected' during Liz Truss's brief and calamitous spell as prime minister in the autumn of 2022. In a speech at the Royal Society of Arts, trailed in some media last night, Stride admitted that regaining credibility 'will take time. And it also requires contrition.'

Helen Hunt opens up about rejecting Hollywood's beauty standards after years of 'misery and shame'

After years in the spotlight, Helen Hunt has learned to let go of the beauty standards that often flood Hollywood. During an interview with The Flow Space, the 61-year-old actress opened up about the "misery and shame" she often felt about her physical appearance early in her career and explained how she chose to move beyond expectations. "It felt impossible not to internalize the way you're supposed to look," Hunt said. "And [there was] a certain amount of misery and shame around not looking exactly that way." Hunt added, "I realized, 'This could quietly ruin your whole life.' I made a decision: I'm not playing. Not gonna [let it] take up a lot of space in my mind." Hunt said her approach has been influenced by "The Only Diet There Is," a book written by the spiritual leader Sondra Ray. "What I took from it is, eat what you want and love every bite, period," she said. Hunt isn't the only '90s heartthrob who has openly spoken about the struggles she faced as a young star. Earlier this year, Christina Applegate got candid about how the pressures of being portrayed as beautiful and sexy on "Married… with Children" led to an eating disorder. "Playing that character kind of did things to me in my psyche that were no bueno – like anorexia," the 53-year-old explained on her "MeSsy" podcast while speaking to guest and former "Married… with Children" co-star Katey Sagal. "Yeah, a pretty bad eating disorder started when I was doing that show that lasted for a really long time," she said. Applegate said she never told anyone about the disorder at the time and was "very, very private about it." "I would hide in bathrooms to eat, because I had so much shame around eating that I would hide on the airplanes, like when we went to London," she said. "I remember hiding in there to eat like one shrimp, 'cause I was so afraid if anyone saw me eat that they'd think I was going to try to get fat or something. I don't know. I was in such a dark space." Sagal, who played Applegate's on-screen mother on the show, which ran from 1987 until 1997, told her that she "didn't know all that." Applegate answered, "Yeah, I kept everything close to the chest. There's a lot of stuff that happened in the wings of my life that you guys didn't know about." Vampire Thriller ‘Sinners' Already Stakes Top Spot On Streaming Charts

Michael B Jordan in "Sinners." Warner Bros. Pictures Sinners — Ryan Coogler's blockbuster horror thriller starring Michael B. Jordan — is already a big hit on digital streaming. Written and directed by Coogler, Sinners opened in theaters on April 18. The logline for Sinners reads, 'Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.' Coogler's Black Panther and Creed movie series collaborator Jordan stars in Sinners as twin brothers, Smoke and Stack. Rated R, Sinners also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wumni Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo. Produced by Warner Bros., Sinners premiered on digital streaming via premium video on demand last Tuesday on such platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Movies Anywhere, Prime Video and YouTube. As of Sunday, Sinners is already the No. 1 top seller on Prime Video's streaming charts, ahead of Jack Black and Jason Momoa's A Minecraft Movie, which is another Warner Bros. release. Figures for the actual number of purchases or rentals on the Prime Video charts, however, are not available. Also as of this publication, Sinners is in the top spot of Fandango at Home's Top 200 chart and is trending at No. 1 on Movies Anywhere. While Sinners is available on digital streaming, the film is still attracting audiences in theaters. Sinners is projected by Deadline to earn $2.8 million from 1,518 theaters through Sunday, which will boost the film's domestic gross to $272.5 million in its eighth week of release. Combined with the film's $82.6 million in international ticket sales, Sinners has a worldwide tally of $353.1 million to date against a $90 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, per The Numbers. While Sinners has become a blockbuster hit, Ryan Coogler said in a recent interview with Ebony Magazine that he's never given thought to making a sequel to the film. 'I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,' Coogler told Ebony. 'I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.' Instead, Coogler added, he 'wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. 'I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it,' Coogler explained to Ebony. 'That was always my intention.' Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, is still playing in theaters and available for purchase or rent on PVOD.
