Glenavon complete European fixture against German side 65 years later than planned
It was a game scrapped because of the Cold War, but now Glenavon and German side Erzgebirge Aue have fulfilled their European Cup tie.
The story of this game dates back to the 1960-61 season.
Glenavon, as Irish League Champions, and the East German league winners, then known as Wismut, were due to face-off in a European clash.
However, visa issues and the Cold War's Iron Curtain meant the game never went ahead.
Fast forward to 2025 and fans travelled by plane, train and even bike to witness the game first-hand.
Lurgan became a sea of purple as more than one thousand fans of the German club made the trip and could be heard in fine voice as they marched their way to Mourneview Park.
Glenavon manager Paddy McLaughlin said: "An unbelievable day. Full credit to everyone involved. A brilliant day out for everyone, for both clubs.
"They came over in their numbers... and it made it an unbelievable occasion for Glenavon football club.
"Absolutely delighted to be part of it. We can do nothing but thank the boys for coming over and making it a special occasion."
Captain Barney McKeown said: "The atmosphere they brought was brilliant.
"It gives us a bit of a taste of what European football could be like.
"As much as pre-season isn't really about results, more about performances, we certainly got a performance out of it that we were pleased with and it's something to build on."
It wasn't to be Glenavon's day, falling to a 2-0 defeat and a 7-0 loss overall on aggregate.
More than half a century on, there's nothing but respect between these two clubs.

The Lions appeared to aim a cheeky and subtle dig at the Scottish champions with a post on X ahead of Saturday's big showdown in the East End of Glasgow. Like most football clubs, the Almondvale side stuck out a post tonight ahead of the game with ticket information for fans who plan on attending. But it wasn't just any old post as they also took a swipe at the Hoops' infamous away end in the graphic they uploaded. The club used an image from behind the steel pillar at Celtic Park which countless away fans have been left furious by in recent years - after having a restricted view of the pitch. It's a sight away supporters - who have visited the stadium previously - are well aware of and it's fair to say the post has gone down well with fans of other Scottish clubs. Celtic fans, though, haven't taken the tongue-in-cheek post as well as others. It has went down a storm on social media with well over 200,000 users viewing it already. This is the exact view many away fans get when visiting Celtic." Another said: "It's funny cos it's true. The most restricted views in world football." A third commented: "Amazing. Truly the worst stadium for restricted views in Scotland if not the UK." In a statement on Livingston's website, they revealed fans who wish to be seated with a "non-restricted view" of the game will be charged £36, while those seated behind the pillar will need to pay £33. Mercedes F1 star Kimi Antonelli suffers mishap on holiday as friends come to his rescue
Like many of his fellow Formula 1 drivers, Kimi Antonelli is making the most of a few weeks off in this packed season to recharge before returning for the 10 rounds that remain in 2025 A racing driver knows better than anyone – the last thing you want is to run out of fuel. But that was the fate that befell Kimi Antonelli while trying to enjoy his holiday during this Formula 1 summer break, forcing friends to come to the teenager's rescue. Still only 18, Antonelli has now experienced 14 F1 race weekends after being fast-tracked into the sport by Mercedes. The Silver Arrows believe the Italian teenager has the potential to go on to be a superstar of the future. Up to now, his debut season in the sport has been something of a mixed bag. There have been a some highs which have shown the obvious talent he has, such as his maiden pole position in the Miami Grand Prix Sprint race, and his first podium in F1 when he finished third at the Canadian Grand Prix. There have also been tougher moments, particularly since the start of the European section of the season. His home race at Imola was a chastening experience and, in the seven Grands Prix held in Europe so far this year, he has managed to score only one single point. Having admitted that he is suffering from a lack of confidence, the summer break has come at the perfect time for the youngster. And Antonelli has been making the most of his time, spotted this week enjoying some time out to see with friends. But he suffered some unwanted technical issues on a jet ski which grinded to a halt having ran out of fuel. Footage of the aftermath was later shared on social media by one of his friends. In the footage, Antonelli is seen standing on the stricken jet ski which is tied via rope to the back of another vessel and being pulled along. The caption, written in Italian, translates to: "Point of view: Transporting Kimi Antonelli because he ran out of gas." Despite the unfortunate incident, Antonelli is still seen smiling as he speaks to his friends who are in the speedboat which is pulling him and the jet ski along. The footage is believed to have been captured off the Greek coast, where Antonelli has been holidaying with friends and his girlfriend Eliska Babickova. Babickova, who goes by the forename Eli, posted a series of snaps of their holiday on Instagram on Wednesday. The post included several sweet snaps of herself and Antonelli embracing one another as they enjoy their downtime. The pair have been together since 2023 and Babickova has attended several F1 races so far this year to watch her boyfriend in action. She and her sister, Petra, are both experienced in karting themselves, having represented their native Czechia.
