Everton 2-0 Southampton: the fans' verdict
We asked for your views on Southampton's performance against Everton. Here are some of your comments:Russell: Until the subs came on that performance was shameful. I feel as bad as you could possibly feel about my football club at the moment. The whole club is so broken. No desire to get forward, no effort, no passion, just backwards and sideways passes - mostly all in our own half. The whole performance and this team is totally gutless. I'm ashamed of what my football club has become this season.Aaron: Saints away at Goodison Park was going to be a foregone conclusion. As a Saint, I'm happy that Everton left on a high. As a Saint, we go on next year in the Championship. COYR.Alex: Redefining "pathetic", week by week.Emil: Go 1-0 down with no goalscorer in the XI. Takes Rusk nearly 60 minutes to react/change. The only positive to take is that like with the previous four incompetent managers, he will soon be gone!Charles: I was very, very disappointed with Saints. No shape, no guts and did I notice for sale signs on the backs of Saints' players shirts? I doubt if they will get any offers. No get up and go, no interest. For the last game of the season, they should play the under-21 team and the directors should declare that the last game of the season be free of charge to all season ticket-holders.

Brazil clinch World Cup spot as Carlo Ancelotti enjoys home debut in charge
Brazil secured a spot at the 2026 World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay in a successful home debut for new manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian's second match in charge made for a memorable night in Sao Paulo, courtesy of Vinicius Jr's 43rd-minute goal. The hosts dominated possession, but managed just four shots on target as Paraguay took the result down to the wire. The result was still much-improved from Ancelotti's debut in last week's goalless draw against Peru. The win lifts Brazil to third in South American qualifying, level on points with second-placed Ecuador who sealed their World Cup place with a goalless draw in Peru. The top six teams in CONMEBOL qualifying receive automatic qualification. Elsewhere, first-place Argentina drew 1-1 with sixth-place Colombia after Thiago Almada's goal in the 81st minute cancelled out Luis Diaz's 24th-minute opener.

Footballer Phoenix O'dine dies suddenly aged just 18 - as his devastated mum makes a heartbreaking tribute
Keen footballer Phoenix O'dine has been remembered as 'the kindest, sweetest kid' and a 'cult figure among his teammates' after his tragic death on Saturday night aged just 18. O'dine's mother Bianca Witney revealed the shattering news in a Facebook post, writing, 'Tragically our golden angel took his last breath surrounded by some of his most loved ones and family. 'Once again the universe has decided to take one of the good ones. 'Phoenix u were the kindest, sweetest kid I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and our lives will never be the same without you. 'I am beyond grateful to be your mum even though your time on earth was FAR FAR too short. 'Will forever and always love you. FOREVER 18.' O'dine played footy for the Port Macdonnell Football and Netball Club, located near the southern tip of South Australia's border with Victoria, with the team also paying tribute to him on Facebook. 'Phe played the majority of his junior football at our club. With all of us watching him grow into a fine young man,' the statement read. 'Always smiling, caring, revving the boys up. 'A cult figure among his teammates. He will be remembered forever and truly missed by all. 'Fly high Phe.' The teenager also ran out for the Nangwarry Football Club, which hailed him for 'putting his hand up for a game with us when they [Port Macdonnell] had a bye which was also greatly appreciated' and described him as 'small in stature but large in endeavour'. The tributes for Phoenix drew dozens of comments from heartbroken friends and acquaintances, with one describing him as 'such a great kid, with a heart of gold' and another praising the O'dine family as 'such a big part of our club'. In another blow to the family, Phoenix's younger brother Dexter was told he needs an Australian-first heart and kidney transplant last year. He was put on life support in an induced coma with late-stage heart and kidney failure but was discharged and allowed to return home last October after a fundraising effort by the family.

Wednesday's briefing: England booed off while Man City sign Cherki
England were booed off after a surprise 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal at the City Ground. The Republic of Ireland were grateful for goalkeeper Max O'Leary in a goalless draw at Luxembourg, while 10-man Northern Ireland claimed a 1-0 win over Iceland. Manchester City had another busy day in the transfer window while Tottenham are inching closer to an agreement with Brentford in their bid to appoint Thomas Frank as head coach. Thomas Tuchel's honeymoon period as England manager is over as boos greeted Tuesday's shock 3-1 friendly loss to Senegal. Three days after being jeered following a poor World Cup qualification win against minnows Andorra, the latest alarming display raised further questions a year out from their bid for glory in North America. Goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly inflicted England's first defeat to an African nation following captain Harry Kane's early opener. Kane told ITV: 'Again, not really good enough. We're not going to panic. But for sure we know we need to do better.' Max efforts rescue Republic Max O'Leary marked his long-awaited senior international debut with two vital saves to spare the Republic of Ireland's blushes in Luxembourg. The 28-year-old Bristol City keeper, who was first called up six years ago, denied Danel Sinani and substitute Vincent Thill either side of half-time to ensure Ireland emerged with a 0-0 friendly draw. 'You always use these games to get answers to questions,' Republic head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said. 'We got some answers – maybe more negative answers than positive from this.' Price makes Iceland pay Isaac Price made the difference at both ends of the pitch as 10-man Northern Ireland clung on for a 1-0 friendly win over Iceland in their final match before the World Cup qualifying campaign. Price lit up a drab first half to put Michael O'Neill's side ahead, but then had to head off his own line as it turned into a defensive scrap after Brodie Spencer was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity. 'I don't think there's too many players come in and play international football and adapt to it as quickly as Isaac has,' O'Neill said. 'He has that ability just to do something a little bit different, a little bit special.' City get Cherki deal Manchester City have completed the signing of France midfielder Rayan Cherki from Lyon for an initial fee of 36million euros (£30.5m). The 21-year-old, who has signed a contract with City until 2030, moves after an impressive season with Lyon in which he scored 12 goals and provided 20 assists in 40 appearances. 'This is a dream for me,' said Cherki after becoming City's second signing of the day following goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. 'I have worked so hard for this all my life. 'I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future.' Tottenham face more Frank talks with Bees Tottenham are moving closer to reaching an agreement with Brentford over compensation to make Frank their new head coach but talks are entering a third day, the PA news agency understands. After positive initial talks over the weekend, Tottenham made an official approach to their Premier League rivals on Monday. Discussions continued into Tuesday and centred on Frank's contract at Brentford, which runs until the summer of 2027 and contains a release clause reported to be in the region of £10million. What's on today? The European Under-21 Championship gets under way with hosts Slovakia taking on runners-up from two years ago Spain in Bratislava. Defending champions England start their campaign on Thursday. Attention will also be focused on the outcome of Spurs' talks with Frank, after the early window for player movement closed on Tuesday.
