Kingdom to celebrate 50 years of Vietnamese ties in 2026

Bangkok Post3 days ago
Thailand and Vietnam will celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations next year, says a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, calling it a milestone that reflects bilateral cooperation across politics, economics and public engagement.
Nikorndej Balankura said the ministry is gearing up to celebrate the event at all levels, noting that Thailand and Vietnam are in a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
This means that the two countries are committed to consolidating and further strengthening all aspects of their relationship, whether its politics, economics, culture, tourism or people-to-people connectivity, he said.
Vietnam is the top investment destination for Thai entrepreneurs in Asean, despite current economic challenges, including increased US tariffs, he noted.
Mr Nikorndej was speaking to a group of visiting journalists from the Vietnam Journalists Association (VJA), as part of a week-long exchange programme to strengthen professional collaboration and mutual understanding, at the ministry offices in Bangkok.
The programme was organised by the Thai Journalists Association (TJA) and led by its president, Norrinee Ruangnoo. (Story continues below)
During the visit, Mr Nikorndej recalled his past experience as Thailand's ambassador to Vietnam. He noted the warm support he received during the Covid-19 pandemic, which underscored the two countries' enduring friendship.
Mr Nikorndej also recognised the impact social media has on public discourse, stressing the role of professional journalists in verifying facts and combating misinformation. 'This era demands skilled communicators to foster accurate, constructive dialogue,' he said.
He emphasised that bilateral media collaboration is essential not only to counter false narratives, but to also serve as a channel for goodwill and public interest.
He then pledged support across all media dimensions and congratulated the VJA on its centennial anniversary, which he called a reflection of its steadfast contribution to Vietnam's development.
Apart from visiting the ministry headquarters, the Vietnamese delegation visited several Thai media outlets, including Matichon Group, Khaosod and Khaosod Online.

Susco, Asia Green Energy bullish on EV industry

An oil retailer and a coal trading firm are expecting to rack up significant revenue from their newly-developed electric vehicle (EV) businesses, which are said to be increasingly disrupting sales of fossil fuels. Local oil retailer Susco Plc and Thai coal trader Asia Green Energy Plc believe the EV industry offers bright prospects, though the domestic automotive market has remained sluggish, attributed mainly to prospective buyers' difficulties in accessing auto loans. Susco has been a sales agent of EVs under the BYD brand since the second half of 2023 while Asia Green Energy has been leasing MG cars to taxi drivers since early this year. Asia Green Energy has also expanded its business by setting up AGE Auto Gallery as a distributor of several EV brands, including Zeekr, Omoda & Jaecoo and Mitsubishi. Chaiyrit Simaroj, managing director and chairman of the Susco board, is aware EV sales have been affected by banks' stricter criteria in granting loans amid a high level of household debt and a price war, but the market should improve in the second half of this year. "The price war is becoming less severe and I believe it will not recur," he said. Though some Chinese EV makers have resorted to cutting the prices of their vehicles in a bid to stimulate sales, this has made prospective buyers reluctant to purchase new cars because they anticipate that prices may continue to fall. This may cause manufacturers to reconsider their pricing tactic, according to business leaders in the EV industry. The household debt issue is a major cause behind banks and car financing companies' cautious approval of loans for fear of non-performing loans. According to the Bank of Thailand, household debt continues to decline, falling to 87.4% of GDP in the first quarter of 2025, attributed to weaker loan demand from borrowers and stricter lending standards from financial institutions. Household debt stood at 88.4% of GDP in the previous quarter. Mr Chaiyrit expects Susco to double its sales of EVs to 4,000 units this year, up from 2,000 units in 2024. "Domestic oil prices remain high. This is a positive factor for EV sales," he said. Last year Susco set a sales target of 3,200 units but ended up selling only 2,000 units, mainly because of the price war and fewer auto loans. Asia Green Energy also believes total revenue from EV businesses will reach 10 billion baht by 2030.

Errant kamikaze drone sparks petition

Thailand has lodged a petition via the Thai-Myanmar Township Border Committee (TBC) following the discovery of a military kamikaze drone that reportedly crashed in Tak province, a source said. The drone was found on Tuesday about 5 kilometres from Khun Mae Woei village in Tha Song Yang district, and the 35th Ranger Regiment was alerted to the incident by villagers, the source said. Military rangers, police and administrative officials then rushed to the spot and found the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) about 15km inside the border. The crash caused no injuries or damage. Initial assessments suggested the UAV originated from Myanmar's military and was intended for strikes against the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), he said. It reportedly lost control and crashed into Thai territory. The drone was equipped with a gas canister believed to be an explosive warhead, he said. The source went on to say that Special Task Force Ratchamanu worked with police and administrative officials to cordon off the area and mark it as a danger zone. Local residents were warned to stay away. An explosive ordnance disposal unit from the Naresuan Task Force has since removed and destroyed the device. Given the serious nature of the situation, Thai authorities have filed a petition through the TBC seeking clarification and assurances. The drone reportedly resembled those used in recent military airstrikes against the KNLA, including those targeting KNLA Brigade 7 on March 18 and June 12, and Brigade 6 on July 13. Earlier on July 17, the commander of Special Task Force Ratchamanu reported that Myanmar had deployed two YAK-130 aircraft to bomb the Ti Ta Hlae base in Myawaddy, just 3km from the border with Tak's Phop Phra district. The base has come under heavy attack by KNLA forces. Myanmar troops were reportedly using supply drops and aerial bombardment to defend their positions.
