GFH Financial Group partners with Safa to offset the annual carbon footprint of its employees

Biz Bahrain08-06-2025
In a significant step toward corporate sustainability, GFH Financial Group has announced a new initiative to offset the annual carbon emissions of all its full-time employees. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Safa, Bahrain's climate action platform and a Mumtalakat portfolio company, will see the Group take tangible action to neutralize its operational environmental impact.
The initiative to offset the carbon emission covers the full-time workforce at GFH Financial Group. According to national emissions data, the average individual in Bahrain emits just over 26 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) per year through daily activities. An individual's annual carbon emissions refer to the total amount of carbon dioxide they generate each year through everyday activities such as driving, using electricity, and consuming goods and services. Carbon offsetting involves financially supporting projects—like renewable energy initiatives or reforestation efforts—that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Through its partnership with Safa, GFH ensures that carbon offsets made on behalf of its employees are real, measurable, and independently verified, meeting Safa's rigorous standards for high-quality carbon credits.
By offsetting the annual emissions for each employee, GFH is demonstrating proactive environmental leadership and reinforcing its support for the Kingdom of Bahrain's Net Zero 2060 ambitions.
This announcement coincides with World Environment Day, reinforcing the shared urgency for climate action and the need for institutions to adopt measurable, transparent sustainability strategies.

Bahrain Builds Surf Culture

TDT | Manama A new generation of residents of Bahrain may soon find their rhythm not on asphalt or sand, but on rolling waves. Construction has officially begun on the Kingdom's first surf park, a 52,000-square-metre development at Bilaj Al Jazayer, designed to bring worldclass surfing to a country better known for its deserts than its breakers. The project, known as the 'Bahrain Surf Park - Club Hawaii Experience', was launched by Edamah and GFH Financial Group during a groundbreaking ceremony attended by key officials yesterday. But beyond the fanfare, the vision is to introduce surfing as an accessible sport and lifestyle to Bahrain's youth, families, and tourists alike. Wave for everyone Unlike traditional beach destinations where surfing remains niche or elite, Bahrain Surf Park aims to open its wave pool and surf academy to everyone, from first-time riders to professional athletes. The facility will use Spain's Wavegarden Cove technology to produce up to 1,000 programmable waves per hour, allowing up to 90 surfers in the lagoon at once. Instructors at the Club Hawaii Experience Academy will offer training suited for all levels, making surfing a realistic goal for school groups, families, and aspiring athletes in the region. 'This is more than just a water park,' said His Excellency Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, CEO of Mumtalakat and Chairman of Edamah. 'It's a landmark initiative that reflects Bahrain's vision to enhance the quality of life through innovation and community investment.'

NBB Participates in Tree Planting Drive in Zallaq and Zayed Town

In commemoration of World Environment Day, the National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) participated in a large-scale tree planting drive on 17th May 2025 across the Kingdom's Zallaq and Zayed Town localities. The activity was conducted under the 'Forever Green' campaign launched by the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) in cooperation with the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, and the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE). The project aims to support national ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change impact while enhancing Bahrain's aesthetic appeal and honouring its agricultural legacy. Marking the fourth phase of the nationwide campaign, the event was organised in collaboration with the NIAD where a total of 206 seedlings were planted over a combined area of 2,518 square metres across Road 55 in Zallaq (745 square metres) and Road 20 in Zayed Town (1,773 square metres). 118 neem seedlings were planted in the Zallaq location, while 76 neem and 12 jatropha seeds were planted along the Zayed Town spot. These seed varieties are well-suited for Bahrain's arid climate and can withstand harsh environmental conditions. The activity was inaugurated with an official ceremony at the Zallaq site in the presence of Her Excellency Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary-General of NIAD, Usman Ahmed, Group Chief Executive Officer of NBB, and Zaina Alzayani, Group Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer of NBB. They were joined by other stakeholders from the agricultural and environmental sectors as well as the Bank's employees who voluntarily took part in the exercise in support of a greener Bahrain. On the occasion, Her Excellency Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary-General of NIAD said, 'This ongoing collaboration with NBB stands as a model for effective public-private partnership in advancing the goals of this national afforestation campaign and promoting environmental sustainability in the Kingdom.' For her part, Zaina Alzayani, Group Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer at NBB stated, 'Our involvement in this project reflects our long-standing belief that real change starts with deliberate action. We are proud to have made another contribution to the national sustainability objectives by helping increase Bahrain's green cover. Planting over 200 seeds across two important locations of the Kingdom is a meaningful way to translate our environmental pledges into tangible outcomes. It is a reminder that sustainability is built on consistency, accountability, and a shared vision for a healthier planet.' The tree planting drive forms part of NBB's wider Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) efforts aimed at contributing positively to the preservation of Bahrain's natural landscapes. Through active engagement, the Bank continues to serve its role as a responsible corporate citizen working diligently to promote ecological consciousness across the Kingdom.
