Amid tariff tensions, India hopes for US relations ‘based on mutual respect and shared interests'
'India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties,' Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. This partnership, he reaffirmed, has 'weathered several transitions and challenges.'
Jaiswal also pointed that defence cooperation remained a strong pillar of the relationship. 'The India-US defence partnership, underpinned by foundational defence agreements, is an important pillar of the bilateral partnership,' he said. This cooperation, he added, 'has strengthened across all domains.'

'We are expecting a US Defence Policy Team to be in Delhi in mid-August. The 21st edition of the joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas is also expected to take place later this month in Alaska,' Jaiswal said. 'Both sides remain engaged to convene the 2+2 Intersessional meeting at the working-level towards the end of the month,' he added.
Trump last week signed an executive order imposing a 50 per cent tariff package on India, including a 25 per cent levy over New Delhi's imports of Russian oil, effective August 27.
MEA had called the US move 'unjustified and unreasonable,' vowing to take 'all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.'
The announcement coincided with preparations for the sixth round of bilateral trade talks, scheduled for August 25 in New Delhi.

Tilaknagar Industries to complete Imperial Blue acquisition by Dec ‘25, awaits CCI nod
Brandy giant Tilaknagar Industries is all set to acquire Imperial Blue which is expected to be completed by December this year as the company awaits regulatory approval from Competition Commission of India (CCI).'Our acquisition of the Imperial Blue business division from Pernod Ricard India is subject to CCI approval, which we expect to receive by (the) end of calendar year 2025,' Amit Dahanukar, Chairman & Managing Director, Tilaknagar Industries, said. The company will enter into a Transition Manufacturing and Services Agreement (TSMA) with PRI to ensure a smooth transition. Tilaknagar Ind. signed an agreement to acquire the whiskey brand Imperial Blue for about Rs 4,150 crore from Pernord Richard. "With the acquisition, the company will become one of the leading players in brandy and whiskey, the two largest IMFL categories. Imperial Blue shall serve as a base for the company's premium portfolio strategy. This acquisition would also strengthen the distribution network of the company," Tilaknagar Industries said in a statement earlier. The company has signed definitive agreements for the acquisition of Imperial Blue division of France's Pernod Ricard, marking the largest transaction in the Indian alcoholic beverage space by an Indian transaction includes normalized working capital of Rs 700 cr and deferred consideration of Rs 282 cr to be paid after 4 years from the transaction closing date, i.e., in FY30. Tilaknagar Industries intends to finance the deal with a mix of equity and debt. The company is set to invest Rs 59 crore to increase the capacity from 6 lakh to 36 lakh cases annually. Trump says Xi assured him China won't invade Taiwan during his presidency
US President Donald Trump has said Chinese President Xi Jinping personally assured him that Beijing would not attempt to invade Taiwan while Trump remains in office. Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Saturday, Trump recalled: 'He told me, 'I will never do it as long as you're president'. President Xi told me that and I said, 'Well, I appreciate that'. But he also said, 'I am very patient and China is very patient'.' The remarks came ahead of Trump's planned talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. According to Reuters, the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment following Trump's statements. The two leaders held their first confirmed call of Trump's second term in June, and Trump had earlier said in April that Xi had reached out to him by phone, though he did not specify the timing of that call. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has repeatedly vowed to achieve 'reunification' with the island, by force if necessary. Taiwan, a self-governing democracy, rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims. China has increased its military presence around Taiwan, with frequent warship and aircraft maneuvers, and regular violations of Taiwan's air defense zone. US officials have previously warned that China could quickly shift to a military blockade or assault if it chose. BJP's Rituraj Sinha calls INDIA bloc's stir on SIR 'fake Voter Protection Yatra'
Patna: Bharatiya Janata Party National Secretary Rituraj Sinha has launched a sharp attack on the INDIA bloc's Voter Adhikar Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, dismissing it as a 'Fake Voter Protection Yatra'. Sinha alleged that the yatra was not about protecting democratic rights but a well-planned conspiracy to safeguard duplicate voter cards, the names of deceased persons, and votes of illegal infiltrators. He questioned Rahul Gandhi directly, asking: 'Does Rahul Gandhi stand with those seven lakh fake voters identified by the Election Commission? Or does he justify voting in the name of 22 lakh dead people?' Claiming the campaign was designed to defend illegal residents in Bihar, Sinha said such infiltrators not only distort the vote bank but also pose a threat to the state's social fabric and security. 'Does Rahul Gandhi want to save the votes of infiltrators or protect the borders of the country?' he asked. The BJP leader described the yatra as an attempt to pollute democracy with fraud and illegal elements, calling it unconstitutional and against the electoral system and population balance. He asserted that the BJP would not allow any anti-national agenda to succeed, expressing confidence that voters in Bihar will give a befitting reply in the upcoming elections. 'The real strength of democracy is honest and eligible voters, not illegal infiltrators with fake identities,' Sinha said. The India bloc will launch its Voter Adhikar Yatra on Sunday from Sasaram to protest alleged irregularities in Bihar's voter list revision. The 1,300 km-long journey will be led jointly by the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav. Senior leaders, including Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, CPI(ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, and VIP chief Mukesh Sahani, will also join the yatra. Over the 16-day campaign, Rahul Gandhi will engage with people both on foot and by vehicle, depending on the density of the population.
