Chum Darang recalls people making fun of her in college for being lanky: ‘They called me bamboo and giraffe'

Hindustan Times05-05-2025

Actor Chum Darang, who became a household name after her stint on Salman Khan's show Bigg Boss, spoke about being body-shamed. In an interview with Times Now, the actor revealed how she was mocked for being thin and tall, and how the taunts didn't stop even after she gained weight. The actor recalled, 'People used to make fun of me because I used to be lanky. They used to call me Bamboo and Giraffe, as I was tall, thin and dark. In college, I started taking medicines to gain weight. Then, people started making fun of my weight. At that time, I realised whatever you do, people will always complain. You just do what makes you happy.'
Earlier, Chum also won hearts when she spoke out against racist remarks made by Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner and YouTuber Elvish Yadav. During a podcast with Rajat Dalal, Elvish mocked Chum's name, calling it vulgar, and ridiculed her ethnicity and her appearance in Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Reacting to his comments, Chum wrote on Instagram: 'Disrespecting someone's identity and name is not 'fun.' Mocking someone's achievements is not 'banter.' It's time we drew the line between humour and hate. What's even more disappointing is that this wasn't just about my ethnicity. My hard work and a film backed by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali were also disrespected. To my fellow Northeasterners and everyone who has faced racism, I see you, hear you, and I stand with you. We all deserve respect, dignity and equality. Let's raise our voices against racism and promote a culture of empathy, kindness and understanding.'
Following the controversy, Elvish was summoned by the National Commission for Women (NCW). In April, he appeared at the NCW office and issued an apology.
Chum was most recently seen in the web series Khauf. The horror series, written by Smita Singh and directed by Pankaj Kumar and Surya Balakrishnan, also stars Monika Panwar, Rajat Kapoor, Abhishek Chauhan, Geetanjali Kulkarni and Shilpa Shukla in key roles. The series is available to stream on Prime Video.

What we can learn from Japanese movies like ‘Spirited Away' and ‘My Neighbour Totoro' about life

In Japanese aesthetics, Yūgen (幽玄) is a profoundly philosophical concept that encapsulates the subtle, mysterious beauty of the world. Unlike direct beauty, which can be easily seen and described, Yūgen refers to an intangible, profound sense of wonder, often evoked by things that are unseen, fleeting, or beyond words. It is the moment when a mist-covered mountain evokes emotions too complex to articulate or when a poem suggests more than it explicitly states. Yūgen has been integral to Japanese art, poetry, theatre, and philosophy for centuries, influencing everything from Noh theatre to haiku poetry and traditional ink paintings. The term itself translates to 'mysterious depth' or 'subtle profundity,' reflecting the idea that true beauty is found in what is hinted at rather than fully revealed. The concept of Yūgen can be traced back to classical Chinese philosophy, which was initially used to describe profound truths. In Japanese aesthetics, it became a defining feature of artistic expressions that sought to evoke emotions through suggestion rather than explicit detail. Yūgen in Literature: The Heian-period poetry collection Manyoshu often used this idea to craft verses that left much to the imagination. The 13th-century Zen monk Kenko Yoshida, in his work Tsurezuregusa (Essays in Idleness), also emphasized the beauty of the unfinished and the unknown. Yūgen in Noh Theatre: Zeami Motokiyo, the father of Noh theater, described Yūgen as the highest artistic ideal—something that should evoke a quiet, profound sense of awe. A performance achieves Yūgen not through grand gestures but through subtle movements and silence, allowing the audience to feel rather than see. Yūgen in Art and Nature: Traditional Japanese ink paintings (sumi-e) use blank space to create depth and ambiguity, while Japanese gardens often feature hidden pathways, misty water bodies, and asymmetry to suggest unseen beauty. Even in contemporary times, Yūgen influences Japanese cinema, photography, and literature. Filmmakers like Hayao Miyazaki evoke Yūgen through breathtaking landscapes and quiet moments of introspection in films like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. Haruki Murakami's novels often leave things unexplained, allowing readers to fill in the gaps. In a world obsessed with clarity and instant gratification, Yūgen reminds us that some experiences are best left mysterious and open-ended, inviting deep personal reflection.

In an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla, Abhishek Kumar, "Maine kisi ko nahi bataya. Main Bigg Boss ke nikalte hi maine ek film sign kar li thi, workshop bhi ho gayi thi, mera cheque amount bhi aa gaya tha, mera script bhi aa gayi thi, mere pass acting teacher bhi aate the muje sikhane. Mai zyada nahi bataunga. Acha production tha, achi cast thi. Sab acha tha. (I haven't told this to anyone. I had signed a film right after Bigg Boss. Workshops happened, my cheque amount also came, my script had come, the acting teacher came to teach me. I won't say much. The production and cast were good. Everything was nice)." But fir maine aisa socha ki koi agar mere baare mei itna bhi sochta hai ki 'Isse Bollywood cast kar sakte hai' voh bhi mere liye bohot badi baat hai (This is that one project due to which I felt bad. But then I thought that someone is thinking about casting me in a Bollywood film, which is big for me)." Abhishek emphasised that it was only this project which he had to let go, otherwise, he had been very selective about choosing his projects.
