'Conor McGregor lived next door – when caught doing something, he'd run home'
Years before he was taunting UFC rivals, Conor McGregor was renowned for winding up his Crumlin neighbours with a wide grin spread across his face.
Growing up in South Dublin, an area plagued by gangland violence and high crime rates, 'The Notorious' came from humble beginnings with his mother, Margaret and father, Tony. Nowadays, neighbours say the 36-year-old has regularly been spotted cruising around the area in his Lamborghini.
However, many of the locals will also remember the teenager who grew up teasing his neighbours with his cheeky antics, before quickly escaping the area and going back into his house.
Keith Carolan, who lived next door to McGregor and his family, offered an insight into what the fighter was like as a youngster. Before McGregor's mega-money bout against Floyd Mayweather in 2017, Carolan told the Irish Independent: "He was cheeky, there was no doubt about that. When he would do things he'd run inside and his mother Margaret would come out and defend him.
"He was a little impish bloke. When I say cheeky I don't mean he'd give you backchat, he just had this cheeky grin. He'd say something, or do something, and he'd have this cheeky grin and then he'd go running.
"He was a fast runner as well, you couldn't catch him. He was a normal young fella but he wasn't afraid to speak up for himself. He was brought up right by Margaret and Tony. He'd give you a bit of lip and then he'd run.
"But sometimes he'd just do things for a laugh. You can see it sometimes still in him now. Every now and again when I see him interviewed on the tele you can sometimes see the young Conor comes out."
The formative years of "young Conor" were spent at his local boxing club, being coached by two-time Olympian Phil Sutcliffe Sr. McGregor's fighting prowess, including his signature left-cross that famously floored Jose Aldo at UFC 194 to clinch the featherweight title, was likely rooted in Sutcliffe's mentorship.
During the lead-up to their fight, McGregor consistently got under Aldo's skin by using every opportunity to rattle the Brazilian that was given to him on social media, press conferences and interviews.
Dubliners will always remember the mayhem that ensued at the Convention Centre, when McGregor swaggered over to Aldo's table and swiped his championship belt, leading to a scuffle that UFC boss Dana White and security could not prevent.
McGregor couldn't be stopped as he seized the belt and declared: "You're looking at the King." Yet, despite McGregor's notorious reputation among fight enthusiasts and Dublin locals, Carolan still recalls the mischievous boy who lived next door.
Carolan added: "When he's not brash and when he's not the swaggering Conor McGregor, you see the little young Conor come out. You see the little smile on his face, especially when he's dealing with his fiancee Dee, you see the little smile coming out.
"Or in some of the programmes when you see he's at home with his mam and dad, you see the little look on his face that he used to give when he was a kid, the little look of, 'Oh I'm going to wind these up now.'
"He was a normal kid but they'd have their fights out there, you know the way kids have their fights and Conor would wind them all up."

2025 Club World Cup betting tips, predictions, and odds
THE LONG-AWAITED revamped FIFA Club World Cup is just a matter of days away. The tournament has been going for 25 years, but it has never been as big or as exciting as it is this year. The new format will see the competition run from June 14th to July 13th in the United States, and will see 32 of the best teams in the world come together to determine which is the best on the planet right now. The tournament will follow the same format as the World Cup, with eight groups of four competing before heading into a single game knockout stage. The likes of PSG, Real Madrid, and Manchester City are heavily fancied by the bookies, but what do our team of betitng experts here at The Irish Sun think? Keep reading this Club World Cup tips and betting guide to find out. 🔥 Best tips for the Club World Cup Inter Milan to reach the quarter finals - Bayern Munich as the highest scoring team - Palmeiras to Win Group A - Cole Palmer for Most Assists - Kylian Mbappé as top goalscorer - Man City to reach the final - PSG to win the Club World Cup - READ MORE SUN STORIES 🏆 2025 Club World Cup odds - Top 20 favourites* Real Madrid - PSG - Manchester City - Bayern Munich - Chelsea - Inter Milan - Atletico Madrid - Borussia Dortmund - Juventus - Flamengo - Benfica - Palmeiras - Boca Juniors - FC Porto - River Plate - Botafogo - Fluminense - Al Hilal Riyadh - Inter Miami CF - FC Salzburg - * Odds are subject to change. Inter Milan to reach the quarter-finals Inter Milan will be looking to bounce back quickly from their 5-0 Champions League final humiliation against PSG, and a relatively easy group stage should allow them to hit the ground running. River Plate will present the biggest challenge in the group for Christian Chivu's side, with Monterrey and Urawa Red Diamonds making up the numbers. After winning the group, a tie with Fluminense is likely to stand between them and the quarter-finals. While the Brazilian outfit is not going to be a pushover, Inter should have too much for them, making a bet on them reaching the quarter finals at evens with bet365 a very attractive prospect. I would also consider looking at Borussia Dortmund to reach the quarter-finals. They are available at the same price and are likely to get through their group before encountering River Plate in the round of 16. They will have too much for the Argentinians but could come unstuck in the quarters against Real Madrid. ⚽ Highest scoring team - Bayern Munich The highest scoring team market presents some really interesting options for punters, but it is Bayern Munich who get our nod here. Vincent Kompany's team has one of the easier groups, which should give them plenty of opportunity to get their goal tally up early. They netted 99 goals in 34 games this season, which should be enough to leave any defence quaking in their boots. They are favourites in this market for a reason, and we think there is value in backing them at 2/1 with SBK. ⚽ Palmeiras to win Group A Unsurprisingly, UEFA clubs are the favourites to win each of their respective groups, but we feel as though there is a very good chance for Palmerias to ruin that in Group A. Porto are the favourites for the group, but they arrive in the tournament off the back of a very underwhelming domestic campaign. While they finished the season in good form, they finished 11 points off league winners Sporting, and were also fairly underwhelming in Europe. Palmerias arrive on a strange run of form, sitting two points off the top of the Brazilian league and losing just two of their last 18 games. If there is going to be an upset in the group stages, this could well be it. You can back Palmerias to win at 9/5 with Spreadex. ⚽ 🥅 Cole Palmer for most assists We're rounding off our betting tips with our most ambitious shout: Cole Palmer to bag the most assists at 33/1 with bet365. Palmer had a sluggish second half to the season at Stamford Bridge, but showed that he was more than capable of rising to the occasion when needed, bagging two assists in Chelsea's 4-1 Europa League Conference final win against Real Betis. Chelsea has a great opportunity to hit the ground running in this tournament, coming up against Flamengo, ES Tunis, and Los Angeles FC. A quick look at international tournaments shows that many of the top scorers and assist-makers end up racking up their tallies in the early stages, and at 33/1, Palmer is well worth a punt with bet365. ⚽ Club World Cup top goalscorer Unsurprisingly, it is the men most would consider the three best strikers in the world right now who dominate the Club World Cup top goalscorer markets: Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, and Harry Kane. Kane offers excellent value and comes into the tournament on good form, having netted six in his last nine games in the Bundesliga and scored twice in England's last two matches. He is Haaland spent a period of time on the sidelines towards the end of this season, only returning for City's final four games. He has bagged two goals for Norway in his two outings, though, including a goal in their 3-0 victory over Italy. Finally, Mbappé is the favourite. The Frenchman comes into the tournament on an excellent run of form, having scored ten in his last six games for Real Madrid, wrapping up a dominant first season at the Bernabeu. He will face Al Hili, Pachuca, and RB Salzburg in the group stage and aim to continue his impressive form. His best price is also 6/1 with Spreadex, which also presents excellent value. All three of these could be worth a punt at their current odds, but I would lean more towards Mbappé given his current form, with Kane being my second pick. If I were looking for an outsider, Serhou Guirrasay from Dortmund offers good value at 12/1 with BetVictor. Dortmund face three non-UEFA sides in the group stage, and he finished the season in fine form, bagging nine in his last ten games. ⚽ 🥅 Club World Cup to reach the final The team to reach the final market has a number of attractive selections. We foresee a semi-final showdown between Man City and Bayern Munich, pitting Pep Guardiola against his former Man City captain, Vincent Kompany. City are currently priced at 5/2 with BetVictor to reach the final, while Bayern are available at 10/3. City will be desperate to get their hands on some gold after their first trophyless season since 2016/17, while Kompany will want to outwit his former manager. We lean slightly towards Man City here, but both teams present great value and are worth considering at their prices. ⚽ 🥅 🏆 2025 Club World Cup winner Real Madrid are the favourites for the competition, but right now, I find it hard to look past PSG. Luis Enrique's men will be full of confidence following what was arguably the most dominant Champions League win of all time, and at 5/1 with talkSPORT BET, they offer fantastic value. The European champions will likely come up against Real Madrid in the semi-finals, but we think Enrique's team will have the better of their Spanish rivals. Xabi Alonso has had little time to prepare for the tournament, and while Madrid are undoubtedly an excellent side, Enrique's knowledge of his squad and his side's momentum make them a much more attractive opposition to win the tournament, especially at 5/1. ⚽ 🥅 Q&A for FIFA Club World Cup 2025 FIFA has shaken up the Club World Cup this year, leaving punters with plenty of questions. Hopefully, the following FAQs will help clear up some of the confusion. 1. Where is the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 taking place? The FIFA Club World Cup will take place in the United States . The final for the tournament will be held at the Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. 2. Which date is the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup? The opening match will see Al Ahly take on Inter Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. 3. Will Messi play in the Club World Cup? Yes . Messi will play in the Club World Cup for Inter Miami. He is likely to feature in the opening game against Al Ahly. 4. Is the Club World Cup every four years? Yes . Under the new rules, the Club World Cup will now be held every four years, similar to the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championships. Ryan Cullen and Charlie Eastwood set for the 24 Hours of Le Mans
There are two Irish divers, Ryan Cullen and Charlie Eastwood - the 2018 Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year - competing in this weekend's in world's most famous motor race: the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sadly, the race will not contain the Cork born racer Matt Griffin who finished on the podium at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 2013, as well as winning the Spa 24-hour race twice. It's left to Cullen and Eastwood to fly the flag for Ireland in Le Mans with Cullen racing in a three-man driver line up for the Vector Racing team while Eastwood is with TF sport. Cullen will race alongside the Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi, who is test and reserve driver with the Hass F1 team, and grandson of two-time F1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi. Cullen's other team-mate is the Russian Vladislav Lomko who, like the Irish man and Fittipaldi, is racing with Vector Racing in the European Le Mans series where the trio lie second in the championship after the opening two round in Spain and France. The team will compete in the LMP2 category in Le Mans this weekend. Eastwood, meanwhile, is poised to make a run at the LMGT3 category with TF Sport driving the #81 Corvette Z06 GT3.R and will be accompanied by teammates Rui Andrade and Tom Van Rompuy. While their Corvette has been held back so far by a few hiccups and sits 15th in the standings, its number 33 team car– which won the first round of the World Endurance Championship in Qatar - will arrive at Circuit de la Sarthe as leader of the LMGT3 standings. The battle in a class of twenty-four cars will obviously be fierce and tight. "Last year we didn't have a great race at Le Mans, but we took a big step forward after the race and during the summer break," said Eastwood. "That showed with some really strong performances in the last three events last year, and we've carried that forward into this season. "We are all looking forward to Le Mans, as for one reason or another we haven't had the start of the season we were hoping for. "I love every single part of Le Mans. It is the best endurance race in the world and by far. "I have so many good memories and key memories of Le Mans: my first laps, the first time I did the parade, the first time I did a qualifying lap, the first time I took the start and heard the roar of the crowd over the engine, which I've never heard anywhere else. "And I have fond memories of winning in 2020. This race it is a dream for many, and I have been lucky enough to do it several times and win it." Eastwood was part of the TF Sport team that won the LMGTE Am category at the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans. The race will roar off the grid on Saturday at 3pm Irish time. Meanwhile, Kris Meeke, the five time winner at World Rally Championship level, has withdrawn his entry for next week's Donegal International Rally. The 45 year old was due to race in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 with navigator Brian Hoy in Donegal the car which is at the top of the standings with Meeke at the wheel in the 2025 Portuguese Rally Championship with the Irishman winning three of the opening four rounds. However Hoy was hospitalised after a crash while navigating Garry Jenning's Ford Fiesta Rally2 at the recent Cavan Stages Rally and Hoy is not fit enough to compete in Donegal next week. "I had hoped to be out on Donegal International Rally this year, and Brian Hoy was due to co-drive" said Meeke on social media. "Out of respect to Brian, I felt uneasy to search around for a co-driver who I'd no experience with. "So, finally we decided to postpone our entry until the future. Huge thanks to all who put in the effort to put everything together.
