
For once, Ryanair needs to say sorry
has a problem in its stance on the oversized cabin bags row – and not with the fact that it offers staff commission for any oversized luggage they detect.

, the airline has built its reputation on straight speaking.
It offers a no-frills service and you get what you pay for. It will tell you quite bluntly what you can expect and what you cannot and it is not overly concerned if it ruffles some feathers in the process, whether that is among its passengers or among consumer advocates.

And that's fine. Really, it is. Everyone knows where they stand if they fly with Ryanair. The airline will almost always get you where you want to go when you expect to be there. On the rare occasions it doesn't, that's generally just the passengers' bad luck.
Part of the deal is you pay for every accommodation – baggage, being first on the plane, sitting in more-favoured seats, getting your boarding card printed at the airport, food, water, whatever.
So it would have come as no surprise to anyone that in its relentless pursuit to streamline operations, the airline would incentivise its staff to identify cabin baggage that, however marginally, exceeded the permitted dimensions.

Nor that it should be deaf to any clamour alleging it had shrunk its bag sizers.
The problem is that one of Mr O'Leary's senior lieutenants went on air and said expressly: 'We don't pay our staff commission for bags.'
That, as we now know, is not true.
Ryanair is very quick out of the traps – generally within hours – to address any perceived inaccuracy in reports on how it conducts its business.
It is not credible that it and the people it pays to monitor media coverage would not have been aware for three months that, in commenting on what was at the time a high-profile issue, a senior executive had made a statement entirely at odds with the truth, misleading passengers and the wider public.
Being straight speaking is one of Ryanair's unique selling and branding points.
If passengers cannot take Ryanair at its word, however blunt, it risks breaking its unspoken contract with its target market. This time, Ryanair needs to show that it knows how to say 'sorry'.

US pharma firms will be 'damaged' by tariffs
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said President Donald Trump should keep in mind that US pharmaceutical firms based in Ireland will be "damaged and undermined" if he goes through with his latest sectoral tariffs threats. Mr Trump said the 15% baseline agreed in the EU-US tariff deal last month would only apply to the pharmaceutical sector for "one year, one-and-a-half years maximum". The US President also said "it's [the pharmaceutical tariff] going to go to 150%, and then it's going to go to 250% because we want pharmaceuticals made in our country," before specifically referencing companies based in China and Ireland. It follows the European Commission's spokesperson on trade Olof Gill insisting that the 15% rate is an "insurance policy". His comment comes amid a section 232 investigation into tariffs on pharmaceutical that is under way taking place in the US. The probe could result in Mr Trump, rather than the US Congress, attempting to unilaterally increase pharmaceutical tariffs above the 15% rate. He alluded to before his deal with the EU by telling reporters the pharmaceutical sector is "special". However, responding to Mr Trump's suggestion that pharmaceutical tariffs could surge far above the agreed 15% rate in the future, Mr Martin said this should not be the case. He added that Mr Trump should keep in mind that US pharmaceutical firms based in Ireland will be "damaged and undermined" if any tariff increases occur. "I've had some more recent conversations in light of the negotiations between the EU and US. "There are certain realities applying here, and the overall point I would make is that tariffs are not good for the world economy, they're not good for people, workers or consumers. "And in the context of pharmaceutical companies, the US has gained increasing share of European pharmaceutical market and indeed of Asian markets because of their presence in the markets. "The companies are global powers now, really globally strong companies, because of their presence in Europe, Ireland being one of the countries that they're present in," Mr Martin said. He added: "Ireland has added value and strength to those companies, and I would say to the [US] President he needs to factor that into the equation. "Those companies will be damaged and undermined if such policies were to bear fruit. "But we understand, and I've been in touch with the president of the commission last week and Commissioner Šefčovič, that the 15% is what's being negotiated, has been negotiated, between the US and EU." The presence of multi-national companies and international pharmaceutical firms in Ireland is a key component of the current Irish economy, directly impacting on thousands of jobs across the country.

Wall Street boosted by string of upbeat corporate earnings
Global shares were mixed on Wednesday, with most big Wall Street equity indices nudging higher and European shares retreating. Dublin The picture at home was reasonably positive as Euronext Dublin outperformed European peers to finish the day up 0.7 per cent. However, food group Glanbia had a day to forget as it sank 4.7 per cent. A trader suggested the move was rooted in a number of negative reports for peer groups rather than any stock specific news for the company itself. 'One of them was Bellring in the US, which published third quarter results that disappointed the market,' he said. 'They were down a whopping 32 per cent on Tuesday and recovered about 5 per cent today.' READ MORE In the same sector, food giant Kerry Group finished down 1 per cent. Among the home builders, Glenveagh Properties was up 0.8 per cent, while Cairn Homes climbed 0.4 per cent. It was a good day for the banks as Bank of Ireland and AIB climbed 4 per cent and 3 per cent respectively. London British equities closed marginally higher as investors assessed a slew of corporate earnings and awaited an expected Bank of England rate cut on Thursday. Developer fails in last-ditch bid to salvage approval for apartments near Royal Hospital Kilmainham
A developer's last-ditch bid to appeal an order overturning permission for 399 rental apartments near the Royal Hospital building in Kilmainham, Dublin, has been rejected by the Supreme Court. The disputed permission for five blocks, including an 18-storey tower, was granted, subject to 31 conditions, by An Bord Pleanála in March 2022 under the since-dismantled Strategic Housing Development procedure. The site of the proposed development by HPREF HSQ Investments Ltd in Heuston South Quarter shared a boundary with the gardens of the 17th-century Royal Hospital Kilmainham (RHK), a protected structure. In their High Court case against the board and the State, with the developer a notice party, architect Paul Leech and former Irish Times journalist Frank McDonald , argued that the proposed development would impinge upon a protected view from the RHK to the Phoenix Park. READ MORE This 'cone of vision' was designated in the Dublin City Development Plan to protect the setting of the RHK and would be adversely affected by the high-rise apartments intruding into it and overlooking the hospital's formal garden, they argued. Last November, the High Court's Ms Justice Emily Farrell upheld the challenge by the applicants, represented by barristers Oisin Collins and Michael O'Donnell, instructed by O'Connell Clark solicitors. She said the board failed to consider that the proposed development was a material contravention of the city development plan 2022-2028. Last March, the judge refused to allow the developer to appeal her decision to the Court of Appeal. The developer did not meet the criteria for permission to appeal because it had not shown the decision raised a point of law of exceptional public importance or was desirable in the public interest, she held. The developer then sought a 'leapfrog' appeal directly to the Supreme Court. Its grounds included that the High Court misinterpreted the board's permission decision. It argued an appeal was in the interests of justice and that clarification of several issues raised would benefit other litigants in judicial reviews of planning decisions. The board took a neutral position on the application for an appeal, while Mr Leech and Mr McDonald opposed any appeal because no issues of general public importance were raised. In a recently published determination, a panel of three Supreme Court judges refused leave to appeal. While the proposed development was 'substantial' and its location important, the case was resolved by the High Court in a 'clear and comprehensive' judgment, supplemented by further consideration when leave to appeal was sought and refused, the judges said. The High Court applied 'clear legal principles' to the facts, they added.
