IIM Calcutta rape case: Court grants bail to accused, asks police about ‘delay' in recording woman's statement
The court granted bail which was set at Rs 50,000 ( Rs 25,000 cash and Rs 25,000 personal bond) to the accused, Paramanand Mahaveer Toppannawar, a second year student at IIM Calcutta.
The counsel for the accused, Subrata Sardar filed a bail application on Saturday, claiming that the complainant is currently untraceable.
'She failed to record her statement before the magistrate on three dates — July 13, July 15, and July 18…,' added Sardar.
During the hearing, the judge asked, 'Why is the statement of the woman not yet recorded by the police?'
According to the Chief Public Prosecutor, Sourin Ghosal, the statement of the victim has not been recorded as the investigation officer has 'not been able to speak to the woman.'
Meanwhile, IIM Calcutta authorities have hired around 20 contractual staff members to 'act as guards.' According to officials, these individuals will be placed at the girl's hostel so that whenever outsiders like repairmen are required to undertake repairs, the staff will be present outside the area to ensure the security of the women.
Delivery personnel are also barred from entering the girls' hostel and will hand over the parcels to the security personnel on the campus at the gate.

He filed for divorce, saying that I am schizophrenic," she said. She also alleged that her husband forced her to quit her previous job. The court then went through the husband's tax returns as his lawyers pointed out that his income had declined after he quit the job. The Chief Justice then told the woman to "be satisfied" with the flat and take up a "good job". "Or you better take those 4 crore, find a good job in Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore... there is a demand in IT centres," he said. "Aap itni padi likhi hai. Aapko khudko mangna nahi chahiye aur khudko kama ke khana chahiye (You are so educated, you must not ask and earn your livelihood)," the Chief Justice said. The order in the case has been reserved.

Three youths arrested for smuggling 6.5 kg of ganja near Namakkal
NAMAKKAL: Three youths were arrested for smuggling 6.5 kg of ganja -- worth Rs 63,000 -- near Mohanur in Namakkal district on Monday night. The arrested youths have been identified as M Tirupathi, 23, and S Vigneswaran, 20, of Erumapatty and V Sanjay, 19, of Senthamangalam. Namakkal district superintendent of police S Vimala, prohibition enforcement wing additional superintendent of police Dhanraj, inspector Sankarapandian and sub-inspector Selladurai carried out a vehicle check near Thirthampalayam on the Mohanur - Paramathi Velur state highway around 11pm. The cops intercepted three youths travelling on a motorcycle, conducted a search and found 6.5 kg of ganja in a bag they carried. "They were smuggling the ganja to sell,' said the inspector. The police seized the ganja and the motorcycle. The arrested youths were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.

High Court Asks Tamil Nadu To Pay 25 Lakh Compensation In Custody Death Case
Chennai: The Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu government to pay an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family of 27-year-old Ajith Kumar, a temple's security guard who died in police custody last month. Ajith Kumar worked as a security guard at Madapuram Temple in Sivaganga district. Last month, police took him into custody in connection with a theft case. A devotee had reportedly requested Ajith to park her car, but since he did not know how to drive, he asked another person to park it. The devotee later alleged that some cash and gold were missing from the vehicle. Police picked up Ajith to question him. Days later, he died in police custody under suspicious circumstances. The post-mortem report revealed over 40 injuries on his body - clear signs of torture. Taking serious note of the findings, the high court confirmed it as a custodial death involving physical abuse, based on a detailed report by a Sessions Court Judge. The court stated that such acts cannot be tolerated in a civilised society and must be dealt with firmly. The Tamil Nadu government had earlier offered Rs 7.5 lakh as compensation, a housing plot, and a government job for Ajith's brother. The high court's Madurai bench yesterday ruled that the state must additionally pay Rs 25 lakh as interim compensation. The court added that the petitioner is at liberty to approach the court again for more compensation after the completion of the criminal proceedings. Earlier, the Madurai Bench made a scathing remark, stating: "Even a murderer wouldn't have inflicted such brutality." Following mounting public outrage, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), asserting that "there should be no questions over the investigation." He has also publicly apologised to Ajith's family. The agency has registered an FIR against Sivagangai police personnel and will also investigate the original theft complaint lodged by a woman named Nikita, as directed by the court. So far, five police personnel have been arrested, including officers allegedly involved in the torture. A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) has been suspended, and the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sivagangai district has been placed under compulsory wait. The High Court has directed the CBI to appoint investigators within a week and submit a final report by August 20.
