Nick Sogard has settled into his role with the Red Sox

Boston Globe12-05-2025

He was traded to the Red Sox before the 2021 season and they developed him as a utility player, introducing him to third base then eventually all three outfield positions and first base last season.
'To be completely honest I didn't love it,' Sogard said Monday before the Sox played the Tigers. 'But as I grew to understand, there's a lot of value in players like
Kiké Hernández
or
Brock Holt
. He was somebody I Iooked up to.
'I've come to accept it. I've actually grown to like it a lot. It keeps it fresh.'

Sogard joined the Red Sox on Saturday having played only 45 innings over six games at first base in the minors. But he started two games at Kansas City and emerged unscathed.

He even turned a double play to end the fifth inning in what was a 1-1 game on Sunday. Sox went on to a 3-1 victory.
'It's fairly new to me but I feel comfortable with a glove on,' Sogard said. 'But there are definitely some little intricacies here and there.'
The Sox kept Sogard on the spring training roster right up until the day before the season started because they wanted him to get work at first base.
He played 31 innings there and that's coming in handy now.

'The footwork is better and I feel like it's pretty solid,' Sogard said. 'It's the kind of thing that will only come over time as it gets more instinctual and I see different kind of plays.'
For now, the Sox are comfortable using Sogard and
Abraham Toro
in a platoon.
'[Sogard] is going great,' manager
Alex Cora
said. 'Good decisions. He's a good player. He's a utility player on a championship-caliber club. The only thing he doesn't have is [major league] time.
'He puts good at-bats, we're happy with that. The moment is not too big for him.'

In an amusing sidenote to all the drama of late,
Rafael Devers
was named the American League Player of the Week for the third time in his career.
Devers was 10 for 21 (.476) with two home runs, eight RBIs, five walks, three runs, and a stolen base. He had a 1.387 OPS.
Devers had four hits and three RBIs against Kansas City on Saturday. It was the 10th time in his career he had at least four hits and drove in at least three runs since making his debut in 2017.
Only
Mookie Betts
, with 13, has more such games in that span.
Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers was the National League Player of the Week. He was 14 of 28 with seven extra-base hits and 12 RBIs.
Ceddanne Rafaela
won the Play of the Week award for his catch against Texas on Thursday when he went into the center-field triangle at Fenway Park to steal an extra-base hit away from J
osh Jung
of the Rangers.
Through Sunday, Rafaela had eight Defensive Runs Saved in center field, tied with
Pete Crow-Armstrong
of the Cubs for the most in the majors.

Brayan Bello
, who faces the Tigers on Tuesday, will be pitching at Comerica Park for the first time. He's faced them twice at Fenway and allowed eight earned runs over 11 innings … Cora met his brother

. 'What a moment,' he said. Cora joked that what he remembers is fouling off too many pitches that were right down the middle.

3 takeaways as the Chicago White Sox win a series, including how the rookie catchers are faring

Miguel Vargas drilled a 2-1 sinker over the left-field wall for a two-run home run in the first inning. The Chicago White Sox didn't get another hit until Chase Meidroth singled in the ninth. Meidroth later scored as part of a three-run rally, but the Sox couldn't complete the comeback in a 7-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals in front of 22,137 on Sunday at Rate Field. 'Great example of continuing to battle,' manager Will Venable said. The Vargas home run gave the Sox a 2-0 lead. Salvador Perez tied it with a two-run home run in the fourth against Mike Vasil, who made his first major-league start. Jonathan India put the Royals ahead in the seventh with an RBI double. Maikel Garcia collected an RBI single later in the inning, making it 4-2. India drove in another run in the ninth with a single. Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run home run in the inning, extending the Royals' lead to 7-2. The first five batters reached in the bottom of the ninth as the Sox chipped away at the deficit. They loaded the bases with two outs, but Carlos Estévez struck out Tim Elko to end the game. 'We didn't get the result we wanted, but it's good that we fought through the whole game,' Vargas said. The Sox (22-44) settled for taking two out of three in the series. Here are three takeaways from Rate Field. The Sox scored five runs in the eighth inning of Friday's 7-2 victory, which included a two-run single by Luis Robert Jr. Edgar Quero provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of Saturday's 4-1 win. Sunday, the late offensive production came in the ninth. Trailing by five runs, Mike Tauchman led off the inning with a walk against reliever Trevor Richards. Singles by Meidroth and Andrew Benintendi followed. Vargas drew a bases-loaded walk. Quero greeted Estévez with an RBI single, making it 7-4. Austin Slater hit a liner that appeared to be headed to left field, but Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. made a diving catch for the first out. 'The athleticism is incredible to watch,' Venable said of Witt. 'He's got a great feel for the game.' A run scored when Robert grounded into a fielder's choice. Josh Rojas walked, loading the bases for Elko. With the rain starting to fall harder, Estévez struck out Elko. 'They continue to focus and continue to grind,' Venable said. 'Credit to (the Royals) for pitching really well and credit to our guys for continuing to stay in there and fight.' Tyler Alexander's day began in Milwaukee. A few hours later, he was on the mound for the Sox. 'Today has been a whirlwind,' Alexander said. The Sox signed the left-hander to a one-year, $760,000 deal on Sunday. 'Signing at noon, then an hour and a half (rideshare trip) from Milwaukee to here, then bullpen in the third inning and pitching in the fourth inning,' Alexander said. 'My first time doing all of that, but it was — try to keep a level head and not freak out too much.' Alexander allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings. He entered with one out in the fourth, following Vasil. 'We had been talking to the White Sox prior to today so we knew that if I signed, there would be a good chance of me throwing today,' Alexander said. 'So mentally, I had prepared for it. 'Just try to go with the flow and I had faced the Royals already this year. I have a little cheat sheet scouting reports that I've been reading over. I was prepared to the best of my ability.' Alexander, 30, went 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 21 games (four starts) with the Milwaukee Brewers this season before being designated for assignment on June 1. He's pitched for the Detroit Tigers (2019-23), Tampa Bay Rays (2024) and Brewers (2025). 'The guy literally just shows up and steps right into an outing, which is impressive,' Venable said. 'And I think that just speaks to what's attractive about him, which is the guy's been around, a nice mix from the left side, can pitch in multiple different roles.' In Sunday's corresponding moves, the Sox placed reliever Jared Shuster on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his left hand. His stint is retroactive to Thursday. To make room for Alexander on the 40-man roster, the Sox transferred left-hander Fraser Ellard to the 60-day injured list. Ellard has been on the IL since May 4 with a left lat strain. The youth movement continued for the Sox during the weekend with Kyle Teel's promotion to the majors. The 23-year-old catcher went 1-for-2 with two walks in his debut on Friday and collected two more hits as a designated hitter on Saturday. 'With Kyle, I've seen him play in a B game on a backfield in spring training and then playing that game (Friday) night, and he brought the same energy and focus to both types of environments,' Venable said before Saturday's game. Teel went 0-for-2 Sunday. The Sox got a lift offensively from Quero, also a rookie catcher, with his RBI single in the ninth. The plan is for the pair to split time behind the plate. 'I think that we're lucky that these guys are special players,' Venable said. 'Certainly they need support and help, but they go out there and they're capable and have the capacity to do a lot of the things that we're asking them to do. Credit to those guys for being outstanding players.'

Kevin Millar Defends Red Sox Manager Alex Cora Amid 'Ridiculous' Hot Seat Talk

Kevin Millar Defends Red Sox Manager Alex Cora Amid 'Ridiculous' Hot Seat Talk originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After starting 30-34, the Boston Red Sox have seen their manager, Alex Cora, get put on the hot seat. Cora has been the manager of the Red Sox since 2021, having managed the team in 2018 and 2019 before taking 2020 off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Advertisement He helped lead the Red Sox to the 2018 World Series championship, but now faces questions over his future with the team. On episode 221 of the Play Tessie podcast, fan favorite Red Sox player Kevin Millar defended Cora amid the calls for his firing. "Alex Cora getting heat is ridiculous," Millar said. "He's a dude. Guys love playing for him. He just signed an extension. It's (on) us. If I hand an 0-2 curveball and give up a three-run home run, that's not on Alex Cora." Millar and Cora were teammates with the Red Sox in 2005, the year after Millar helped the Red Sox win the 2004 World Series. It's no surprise that Millar defends Cora, as the two, even in just one year together, built a strong connection. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora before the game against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Stringer-Imagn Images The Red Sox are struggling as a team, losing eight of their last 11 games. Sitting 9.5 games behind the New York Yankees for the American League East lead and four games out of a wild-card spot, the Red Sox need things to turn around, and fast. Advertisement But it's not solely on Cora to turn things around. "Players gotta step up," Millar said. "Players gotta be better, we gotta play better." Cora has been at the forefront of the blame for the Red Sox's recent issues. But Millar's defense of Cora points to the players as the ones to blame for the issues at the beginning of the year. Whether it's poor pitching, which the Red Sox have had plenty of, or hitting not working in key moments, those stem from the players, not Cora. "But Alex Cora is not an issue," said Millar. "It drives me crazy." Cora's seat may still be hot, but a fan favorite Red Sox player has his back. While Cora may still get fired, for now, Cora will try to help the Red Sox out of the hole they dug themselves into at to beginning of the year. Red Sox Get Encouraging Update on $120 Million Free Agent Signing

Red Sox Get Encouraging Update on $120 Million Free Agent Signing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox may be getting the spark they desperately need, with star third baseman Alex Bregman making encouraging progress in his recovery from a right quad strain. Advertisement Bregman, who landed on the 10-day injured list on May 24, has begun a running progression and is currently traveling with the team for their series against the New York Yankees. Though the injury was initially described by manager Alex Cora as 'significant' and similar to the quad strain that sidelined Bregman for over two months in 2021, signs point to a faster recovery this time around. Tim Heitman-Imagn Images 'If it's up to him, he'd be playing tonight,' Cora joked ahead of Friday's series opener in the Bronx. 'He's locked in. He has his date on his mind. We just have to keep working. Obviously, we don't want to rush, and we have to be very diligent with it. But he's feeling great.' Cora admitted the rehab process has gone better than expected, though he declined to reveal a target return date for Bregman. The three-time All-Star was playing like a true centerpiece before the injury, slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs, 17 doubles, and 35 RBIs across 51 games. His .938 OPS led Boston at the time of his injury. Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston this offseason and had been a stabilizing force both offensively and defensively at third base. Advertisement His absence has been felt, with the Red Sox going 3-7 in their last 10 games and falling to fourth place in the American League East. They now trail the division-leading Yankees by 9.5 games but sit just 4.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
